But that's not as good for PR as "bigger, faster, better" even if that comes with the problems you mentioned.

Long story short: workable solutions exist, it is entirely a question of political will and lack thereof.
Just see how hard it is to read more than a few paragraphs when tired before bed vs. how hard it is to watch something in the same state.
I think this gets added to the point you are making about reading skills declining.
The likelihood of a non-profit outfit building open source software being driven by a warped sense of justice and the goal of making people miserable rather than, say, trying to make sure they can continue their stated mission and ensure publishers keep agreeing to digital book lending is pretty bold. But sure, why not.
Have you ever heard of Direct Hit!? I think they squarely fit in the mid-level or below.
Granted it can be clunky at times, but the properties are there and decentralised end to end encrypted messaging is quite and incredible thing. (Yes, Matrix nerds, it's not messaging per se it's really state replication, I know :))
Yeah, it's a bit of a joke.
See also this conversation, where Mobime request respect and to "acknowledge the efforts being made to resolve the situation" while blurting out things like "We could have easily suspended the entire repository, but we have chosen to keep it open to reassure you that we are taking all necessary steps to resolve this". Classy.

Align on a protocol, experiment and compete with clients is a good way to make progress.
The Matrix name has never budged since the beginning of the project. One of the Matrix servers is called Synapse. Others include Conduit or Dendrite (see https://matrix.org/ecosystem/servers/).
So yes, Matrix is the protocol, not the/a server.
My understanding is that it should be seen more as the starrtng point of a reflexion about the police (what should we therefore do?) rather than a conclusion.
I expect your TV to understand UPnP, possibly SMB and maybe AFP. That info should be in the TV's manual/manufacturer's website.
The Kodi answer still stands as I'm guessing you will find the TV's media centre limited, as they usually are ;)
I'd recommend reading the recommendations on the Kodi forums regarding hardware choices, depending your needs/wants: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252916
At any rate, I think these days the which media centre question is mostly settled, it's Kodi. The question is: running as an app on Android? On your laptop? On a proper dedicated box and OS? If so, from scratch? Using one of the purpose built distros? (OSMC, Libre ELEC).
Pretty surprising.
It also messed up as soon as it hit 10⁹ views, saying it would hit 10⁹ views in 23 hours, 59 minutes etc.
Cue walled garden rant.
Wha you can do is use an existing Facebook (Jabber) account on a regular Jabber client such as Pidgin, Adium and such.
No problem chatting with @gmail.com JIDs from any Jabber server though (well, besides the fact that Google's Multi User Chat support is pretty shitty in my experience, and that the two-way Jabber subscription process it bit weird in Google land).
I absolutely second the Prosody advice though, wonderful server and very friendly community and devs!
I'd like to see counterpoints to this experience, if possible.
