thomas··on Ford F-150 Lightning Reaches Its First Customers
Sounds very cool but the 2022 F-150 HEV model was pretty impressive was well [0].

thomas··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Full Review: Electric Truck for the Masses
People make such a big deal about this, but there was a Ford F-150 HEV [0] released in late 2021 (2022 model) that no one seems to talk about. It used the Ford Hybrid PowerBoost V6 engine (3.5L F150 FHEV), and seems to be more than sufficient. Though I haven't driven it myself.

Yes, but if you use the right pen it helps a lot! Good reference: https://unsharpen.com/what-are-the-best-pens-for-moleskine-n...

I've found that the Kindle app is surprisingly good at reading comics. Pair it with a tablet and Libby and you are good to go... at least as a casual reader.
thomas··on I quit my job to make free web tools
Builtwith.com is excellent for domain association. They have some very good common keys like GTM container, GA etc.
thomas··on I quit my job to make free web tools
What's a good information source for this? Like is this just something built on the domain tools api? Or is more of a front end for dig?

Congrats though, great looking site and it's super snappy.

thomas··on Locked out of 'God Mode', runners are hacking their treadmills
Totally dystopian. We need more dumb devices like https://non-smart.com
thomas··on Public Domain Radio
This is great! Does simply owning the record give them the right to play/distribute the track? Or is it because they are out of copyright and in the public domain?

thomas··on Report to Congress: Robocalls and Transmission of Misleading Caller ID
Yes, most government data is awful but it's usually at least workable. That's why sites like sec.report and https://fccid.report exist. https://www.ecfr.gov is actually good though.

Not at all an expert in the space, but Flexport comes to mind.

thomas··on Carolina Gold was once the most popular rice grown in America (2019)
I've had it a few times and it's very good, but not better than most good rice. I think people mostly just don't have nice or fresh rice, they fine Carolina gold which is very well branded and think it's the best. It's not hard to find better than average rice online[0].

thomas··on Mr. Rafieh’s Tehran Pencil Shop
Ah yes, good call, thanks for the keen eyes!
thomas··on Mr. Rafieh’s Tehran Pencil Shop
Wonderful gallery! Interesting sharpening technique in image 7 with a blunt writing tip. Typically you'd seen a more angled cone [0] and a sharper end, but I guess this means no color is wasted when doing the initial sharpening?

Anyone note a list of his brands? I think I see some Faber-Castell but can't ID anything else.

thomas··on What Ended Indie
Ah, thank you. I would have called this the "net asset value" or perhaps the book value, or something like that.

So, in other words, Indie lacked in notable liquidity events so realized IRR was low while the perceived book value was somewhat higher. I'd imagine this happens all the time in VC.

thomas··on What Ended Indie
Yes, it was an interesting read but my takeaway was that this was a very conventional failure as an investment vehicle.

Can anyone explain "as converted" IRR to me? I'm fairly familiar with finance concepts, but this was a new one to me, so seeing it being blamed in some way for the fund's closure confused me.

And now the side it actually dead? Anyone find a cached version? Had something similar almost happen and was curious to read!

thomas··on The Cole-Bar Hammer, a 7-year old Kickstarter that is still going
My findings largely reflect this, but I have to admit that I stopped after about 10 projects. Now I will no longer do a KS, regardless of the product, or the founder, or the price. I'll just wait, pay full price later if it's worth it, and save myself the frustration and multiple "regrettable delay" notes.
thomas··on Desalination Breakthrough Could Lead to Cheaper Water Filtration
I've often wondered if home water filters, which can filter out lots of things [0] were doing light desalination. A slight amount of salt in water is desirable in specialty water like Vichy, but I'd imagine it would be unhealthy all the time.

thomas··on Retire at 35
Number 1 tip would be to save, number 2 would be to reducing housing expenses as early as possible. Something like https://55pl.us/what-is-manufactured-housing/ can work wonders, regardless of your age.
thomas··on Building the Middle Class of the Creator Economy
Quite a flawed article. To think you can shape people's watching behavior towards second-rate content is to be confused about how people actually spend their scarce time. Sure, people can use help finding things they like, but how were these large yet new creators discovered in the first place? Clearly there are mechanisms for rising to the top in each category... but perhaps there is just too much stickiness at the top?

Realistically, the largest creators are the most valuable to the places where content is consumed, so it's in the platforms' interest to keep them big and keep them being watched. These means less burden on content review. If 90% of view time goes to 1% of producers, content review a challenge. If 90% of views go to 10% of producers, now content review is a disaster. This "brand-safe" content is taken extremely seriously right now and it's not the time platforms will do anything except double down on this.

thomas··on The Two-Decade Cultural Impact of ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’
Wonderful film. One of my favorites and one of the few that I return to time and again. The music is excellent as well, as the piece points out.
thomas··on Experiments on a $50 DIY air purifier that takes 30s to assemble
Yeah, same thought. Something like the Coway air filter ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxiDrEnjYEo ) regularly sells for under $200, and it is going to be much quieter than this option. It also has been tested fairly extensively from what I've seen, it's EnergyStar approved, etc, and it has a built in sensor. It doesn't look too bad either.

But I understand the point, especially in times when you can't find a purifier.

Also, good video on all this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH5APw_SLUU
