thomasthomas··on Ask HN: How to efficiently import Excel/CSV files
1. Come to an agreed upon format with clients 2. SSIS
thomasthomas··on You probably don’t need input type=“number”
Similar to the rule of thumb I use: if adding 1 to the number gives you anything meaningful its a number.
thomasthomas··on AT&T Is Dragging HBO's Streaming Strategy Out of the Dark Ages
Needs an "Are you still watching?" prompt as well. It will play every episode of a series if you fall asleep while watching. Would cut costs for them too.
thomasthomas··on Experts cracked laptop of crypto CEO who died with $137M, but the money was gone
"Im yet to see one that works as expected"

it might be wasabi wallet. not 100% though

thomasthomas··on Apple Had Five Ways to Fuel Earnings. Only One Still Works
it's not "seen as a problem," the company just gets valued differently if growth is expected to slow
thomasthomas··on Hello, GitHub
communities are moats too
thomasthomas··on Ask HN: What would it cost to build and maintain a Facebook clone?
add up all their expenses on all their 10k's and you have a baseline starting point.
thomasthomas··on Ask HN: Is it tacky to include app revenue on a resume?
Put it in and be proud. Its an achievement, that's what resumes are for.
thomasthomas··on Ask HN: Why don't Facebook and/or Google offer paid ad free versions?
Same reason google doesn't offer this for gmail.
thomasthomas··on Jeff Bezos' wealth tops 105B dollars, now officially the richest man in history
bezos has the worlds information on a device in his pocket. he can go to the grocery store and buy 1000s of different affordable items. yeah, hes the richest.
thomasthomas··on Understanding Ethereum Smart Contracts
just curious, what are you doing with ETH contracts? working on a product or just hobby?
thomasthomas··on Twitter says it could turn first-ever profit
i think their past issue was having to hire more sales people to scale revenue in a manual fashion talking to companies rather than having a robust programmatic platform they can rely on to bring in revenue with fewer headcount. not sure if this is still a problem for them or not.
thomasthomas··on Cost of iPhone X in 1957
these comparisons are fine and fun. but a single iphone isnt that valuable if youre the only person on all the different networks an iphone gives you access to
thomasthomas··on Linux desktop market share over 3%
makes sense. as majority of the population moves away from desktops, windows and mac will lose market share. the hardcore Linux users that aren't going anywhere will gain market share.
thomasthomas··on SEC Is Studying Spotify's Plan to Bypass IPO in NYSE Listing
visa fees? way less. total fees to the merchant per swipe is way under 3% for any sizable businesses. something like 1.2% + $0.10 was average when I worked for a payment processor.
thomasthomas··on “Bing is bigger than you think,” Microsoft boasts, at 33% of US searches
what is defined as a search? searching within social networks is most definitely a 'search' but probably not counted. I would estimate almost half my daily searches are on a social network.
thomasthomas··on Jeff Bezos Surpasses Bill Gates as World's Richest Person
No investor pushes for more money back when the company can get a better ROI than the investor. Apple buybacks are a result of not having any better ideas on what to do with their cash stockpile.
thomasthomas··on As ESPN Falters, The Athletic Chases Fans Tired of ‘Old Fluff’
I agree except when you watch a game on twitter they force the generic #[whatever game it is] feed down your throat instead of being able to see your curated feed you spent years putting together.
thomasthomas··on How Hollywood Got Hacked: Studio at Center of Netflix Leak Breaks Silence
win7 is totally fine if you're up to date on patches.
thomasthomas··on How Hollywood Got Hacked: Studio at Center of Netflix Leak Breaks Silence
I think the author means XP and not Win7?
thomasthomas··on Amazon to Acquire Whole Foods for $13.7B
they're called 10-k's. https://www.sec.gov/cgi-bin/browse-edgar?action=getcompany&S...
thomasthomas··on Uber is imploding, but does anyone really care?
stand outside the building. ask to borrow some shares.
thomasthomas··on The Botmakers Who Rule the Obsessive World of Streetware
ticketmaster is now really good at preventing and detecting bots. I think the guys in the article are clever by taking their customer's payment info and using that in the bot. that's another difficulty a bot runs into while auto purchasing. can't fake payment info / purchase limits.
thomasthomas··on Autonomous Ships
By one consultant's estimate, moreover, carrying sailors accounts for 44 percent of a ship's costs.

I find this hard to believe even if autonomous ships can be done without a bridge. The Emma Maersk has 15,000 TEU and a crew of 13 http://www.emma-maersk.com/specification/

thomasthomas··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
taleb says himself in antifragile the answer is antifragile
thomasthomas··on Ask HN: Underemployed and anxious. What would you do?
talk to a recruiter like teksystems. find out who works for the NY office and send them an introductory email. I had the exact same issue a while ago and this was the solution, I had a job < 2 weeks after first contact. take a short contract gig to beef up your resume. be selective with the opportunities the recruiter brings you, learn your market value
thomasthomas··on Tech’s ruling class casts a big shadow
Funny how amazon gets thrown in with facebook under the 'consumer tech industry' moniker. facebook sells ads to make money. amazon sells physical stuff. how are they related besides both using technology? I think we should group businesses by how they make money and who they compete against. 'technology company' doesn't mean anything in a world where every company has technology.
thomasthomas··on Ask HN: How do you set prices?
false dichotomy. can be higher end and cheaper.
thomasthomas··on Some Reflections on Being Turned Down for a Lot of Data Science Jobs
Some companies are really dumb and only consider candidates with specific job titles on their resume. I've had recruiters from contract companies say "your experience is great but can we change your previous job title to X." Recruiter knows the client gets hung on job titles if its not exactly what they're looking for. In my experience i'll change previous job titles to fit the position i'm applying for, as most of my previous jobs I could've been titled 4-5 things.
