thousand_nights··on Product Managers aren't safe either
at my company they are trying to get us engineers to absorb that role so now we spend a lot of our time doing meetings and human interactions like this with other parts of the business and making decisions

idk how common this is in the industry though, but since the introduction of AI my role has expanded so much beyond what is just writing code, i'm now a devops/product/dev person and expected to do all of that at once for the same pay as before

i actually enjoy it myself cause you feel less like a ticket pusher

thousand_nights··on Google value plunges by $500B as AI fears rattle Wall Street
i'm disappointed that Mythos is an Anthropic model because it would be the perfect naming for Google's models since they only actually exist in benchmarks or press releases
thousand_nights··on Cuba is skipping its November 1, 2026 clock change and staying on DST until 2027
i mean us night owls have been used to society fucking us over with their schedules for our whole lives, it's nothing new
thousand_nights··on Hex Raises $100M
> https://hex.tech/

that is one of the most unhinged landing pages i've ever seen, it looks like a vibe coded claude mess that somehow raised 100M

is no one looking at what they're releasing anymore? do people just not care? i guess they don't have to if some intern can just prompt "make cool website for our useless company" and then 100M appears at your door from eager VCs

thousand_nights··on Jailbreaking the Switch 2
yeah beginning of the year Claude would refuse to help me with homebrewing beer because it relates to biology (yeast)
thousand_nights··on Xbox wants you to pay 24 to 40 cents per hour to stream games you bought
turns out, 'you will own nothing and be happy' wasn't just a meme
thousand_nights··on Who Is Planting Backdoors in Ledger Crypto Wallets?
i don't think OCRing a bitmap font is very expensive or power hungry, if you know the exact pixel configurations of the glyphs ahead of time
thousand_nights··on Codex CLI installs a persistent, self-updating background daemon by default
i'm personally quite perplexed how sloppy the harnesses are from the leading AI labs, you'd think these are their primary products and would have some human attention devoted to them

it's embarrassing when every claude code release has obvious bugs in it like telling you to upgrade when you're on the latest version or codex opening visible powershell windows for every command that pop up on your screen

like 5 minutes of human testing would catch this obvious shit but obviously they don't bother because vibes are the future and stuff? idk

thousand_nights··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
> Their ads are terrible.

I imagine they are that's why I pay for YT Premium, which I think is my most bang for buck subscription based on the amount of time I spend watching it

> Curation doesn't exist.

I don't find this a problem personally because 95% of my feed is just channels I'm subscribed to but YMMV depends on what you expect out of it

thousand_nights··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
independent-ish creators (I'm aware that a lot of channels seem to be bought out by private equity lately), but mostly science, technology, speedrunning, mysteries, recipe guides, things like that, basically stuff that I'm interested in
thousand_nights··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
youtube has slowly become like 90% of my TV time over the past few years, I think it's the fact that you don't have to commit to watching 40+ minutes of something every time and there's just way too much interesting content on it

and i'm not even someone you'd class as young anymore, so I don't think this is a younger generation thing

thousand_nights··on I don't like passkeys
am i the only one on HN who really likes passkeys?

so much better than fumbling around with a password managers

thousand_nights··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
it's an internet thing. people were typing lowercase on IRC in the 90s.
thousand_nights··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
> You wouldn't ask an agent to review a PR then just copy/paste the output into the PR, would you?

of course not, it's disrespectful to the author even if they used an LLM to generate the code. what you should do is actually try to understand what the LLM is saying about the proposed changes, check whether it's talking shit or legit, and if legit, rephrase in your own words why you think a certain thing should be changed

thousand_nights··on Nvidia dismisses "circular financing", says every $1 it invests brings back $100
> The figure was rhetorical, not a disclosed 100-times investment return.

seems no one is reading the article..

thousand_nights··on I asked astra to make playable 4D chess
very cool. that being said, I have never not wanted to play anything more than this :D
thousand_nights··on The Real Luxuries In Life
this is nice to know as someone who is the adult child.

i used to argue a lot with my parents when i was still living with them, but ever since i moved out and we only see each other once every few months, our relationship has improved so much, and we're always happy to see each other in smaller doses

thousand_nights··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
that game had such a dope soundtrack!
thousand_nights··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
> He was a bright and broken child

i wasn't there and i didn't know him, but talking about a 26 year old man like this makes it seem like you're just taking away his autonomy

thousand_nights··on Sol loves to cheat
people want fuzzy analog machines with digital controls, it's impossible
thousand_nights··on Qwen3.8 27B scores 52 on Artificial Analysis
yes of course, I understand that. but I feel like it would've been nice to include in the article because the main point of it is the effort and overthinking
thousand_nights··on Qwen3.8 27B scores 52 on Artificial Analysis
i feel like Simon omitted an important part of how Qwen's "reasoning" levels work. they are just one sentence additions/omissions to the system prompt

xhigh -> "Reasoning effort is set to xhigh. Please think carefully through the task, validate key assumptions, consider plausible alternatives, and prioritize correctness, consistency, and clarity in the final answer."

medium -> no mention of effort (sentence omitted)

low -> "Reasoning effort is set to low. Keep your thinking brief and focused, moving directly to the conclusion without unnecessary elaboration."

in my testing this doesn't seem to produce exactly deterministic thinking levels, because it's just a system prompt nudge. i had instances where medium thought longer than xhigh

thousand_nights··on A simple fix for LLM tail latency

thousand_nights··on H3-metal – Native MiniMax-H3 inference for Apple Silicon
> a ~9-second 480x864 clip at 20 steps takes me a bit over an hour

that's rough. for comparison, i tried the exact same parameters on my 5090 RTX and it took 2 minutes to generate.

i believe diffusion models are primarily compute bound so the macs aren't really the ideal hardware for this kind of stuff

thousand_nights··on Did They Ghost You?
for a moment i thought this was a commentary about my relationships
thousand_nights··on Opus 5 is currently #1 on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Leaderboard
i do homebrewing and asked it to compare some beer yeasts for me and hit the safeguards because... biology i guess lol
thousand_nights··on Claude Opus 5
same tbh but i feel like we're still required, maybe not in the same numbers as before, and our job description has just changed. it feels more akin to an "AI Agent Operator" or something similar.

i'm still pretty confident someone like my mom wouldn't be able to do my job even with the same access to all the latest LLMs, so we're still providing some value, just in a very different way. whether the market will reprice the cost of our labor, we will see

thousand_nights··on Elevated error rate on Claude Opus 4.8
seems to happen daily when USA wakes up and Europe is at peak working capacity, I don't think it's a coincidence
thousand_nights··on Claude Code to be removed from Anthropic's Pro plan?
there's nothing stopping them from saying that, which is my point which you missed
