thrill··on Mac Studio M5 Ultra 512GB Officially Released
This is why people like to pick up the new Studios from the Apple Store in person - for that short ride back home their car is worth four times what it was on the way there.
thrill··on In Hilbert space, all things are quantumly possible
[flagged]
thrill··on Senior Engineers Are the Next DRAM Shortage
Why do the immediate complaints that something is AI generated feel like they're AI generated?
thrill··on Unsolved Problem by Fields Medalist Breached by Two High School Students
Haven't you heard? Fields Medalists believe it only counts when they do the solving - not the unwashed.
thrill··on Altman tells staff OpenAI is open to slowing AI development
Of course they are - anything to secure their position.
thrill··on YouTuber, or someone, wants to send nice emails to active military personnel
Ditto.
thrill··on Bye, Bye GitHub
Being the “first(!) post” to complain about AI, correctly or not, is the new street cred.
thrill··on Bye, Bye GitHub
A vanilla git server works great too.
thrill··on How much of HN is AI?
Far less than the constant whining about AI.
thrill··on Cancer-related mortality among US pilots and flight attendants
Probably not unless there was something presenting, as a Class 1 FAA medical exam is checking medical history, vital signs, vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, neurological function, and general physical condition. There's a urine test for blood, glucose, protein. Last one I had there was no blood test or cancer screening unless it was something showing on the skin.

Interestingly, to me, my last medical was 2 years ago and there was no concern for the spot on my cheek that turned out to be basal cell carcinoma.

thrill··on Columbia House, Mail-Order Media Company, Is Shuttering
I guess my buddy from long ago was right - he never paid them that penny.
thrill··on Half of Europe's towns and villages have fewer residents than 60 years ago
So the other half have more?
thrill··on Water system controllers don't belong on the internet, says ex-NSA chief
Why bomb something, which carries its own risk profile and success criteria, when you can make some piece of equipment malfunction just enough to wear out in a year instead of 20 years?
thrill··on Civilian plane crash in New Mexico tied to military GPS blocking
Errors can be along any axis, random, infrequent, drifting, and nonobvious.
thrill··on Apple is getting this wrong
We're living through the history of how OpenAI became AppleAI, told in a teenager's diary tone - we just need some doodles in the corners.
thrill··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
auto-erotics ... it was sitting right there.
thrill··on Banning AI will not make it go away
It will just make it so only the privileged can benefit - and that list will not include you.
thrill··on Answering "why do you want to relocate?" during interviews
Sutton's Law.
thrill··on Show HN: Updated my landing page with Fable (retro pixel style)
I think the homepage is creative.
thrill··on Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition
When a certain now famous (in those circles) narrator was first getting started he mentioned on his FB page he wanted help with pronunciation of certain military terminology. I offered to help, knowing people in many fields plus my own. And ... my goodness, the absolute poor quality of some the writing he sent me. One author would use the full terminology for every firearm every time he looked at it, picked it up, loaded it, holstered it, drew it, released the safety, fired it, cleaned it, thought about while in the shower, whatever. You got tired of reading about the "Heckler & Koch HK45 Compact Tactical (HK45CT) MK-24 Mod-0" fully spelled out three times a page.

And then the author with his own specialty started writing about my field ... oh so badly.

So, knowledge of weapons doesn't translate in knowledge of writing (or vice versa). My only criteria any longer is just don't say "clip" unless your character has scored himself a Mauser C96 or similar and we're good.

thrill··on Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition
Just watch "that scene" from Heat again - it's like a double espresso.
thrill··on Claude Fable 5 Promotional Access
I'm disappointed with this. Historically, Claude's API cost a significant multiple of their subscription pricing, and after the promotional period it appears the access to Fable will be API only, if I understand this.

There actually is a limit to what people will pay for model usage, and I suppose this squeeze is one way to find out what that limit is. I've been content paying $200 per month for a solid plan that I actually don't quite use up every month, but this new vector really rubs me the wrong way.

thrill··on We moved our Bluesky data to Eurosky
Why not - eventually it will be The Year Of The Linux Desktop.
thrill··on BMW iX5 Blows Away the Competition with 460-KW Charging, 435-Mile Range
Any BMW with a grill smaller than an ASHPD portal is palatable.
thrill··on Claude Science
It's called Claude Science, not Claude Politician.
thrill··on 22-year-old Mozart's handwritten notebook unearthed in 'major discovery'
don't fret over dark keys
thrill··on 22-year-old Mozart's handwritten notebook unearthed in 'major discovery'
That looks pretty engaging - all the right people hate it.
thrill··on Apple to skip high-end M6 Mac chips in favor of AI-focused M7 line
Come on Apple - just buy TSMC and fully kit out the RAM in all Mac Studios - you could even make (more of) a fortune selling the excess.
thrill··on The early hiring funnel is now breaking on both ends
Hiring has always been broken.
thrill··on Dallas Fed: 30% of housing cost increase driven by unauthorized immigration [pdf]
If only builders could figure out some way to consolidate multiple living units under single roof, with shared building systems. Maybe something in the vertical dimension?
