throw7··on ‘You Are Done’: The letter sent to King by the F.B.I (2014)
I am much more circumspect on the civil rights movement and the top-down legislative results over the decades. There was good and bad. And the FBI telling MLK to kill yourself was heinous, just the same as to today as the FBI coercing Brian J. Cole Jr. (jan. 6 bomber suspect).

throw7··on What shall I teach my son?
"as a student of McLuhan, Postman would be remiss if he didn’t invite students to make the tools and narratives that thereafter make us"

That's less Mcluhan and more Foucault.

throw7··on Delta’s Biscoff cookies were supposed to be temporary
If it's any help, the company denies that Delta came up with the name, but doesn't offer an explanation to the origin of the name itself.

It's also funny how they deny that the original deal with Delta was only a temporary short term deal, but that it was always a longterm deal.

throw7··on Passkeys are not a trap
As far as I've read here before, device attestation is definitely there, it's just not being used (one of the big tech namely Apple is balking... maybe they have their own means or plans in their ecosystem).

My main reason for not using it is I'm not interested participating in a scheme where I do not own/access the private keys and being able to use them and store them the way I want to.

I'm fine with TOTP and sure, I understand it's not phishing resistant by itself.

throw7··on Google is silently linking your phone number across all signed-in accounts
Age verification is pretty aggressive... recently tried creating a youtube account (google) and they require gov't id/facecheck/creditcard? once you hit age restricted content.
throw7··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
The main thing for me was having a syncthing node available 24/7. Initially I was hesitant to put one on a 3rd party vps, but there is now an untrusted device mode in beta that I haven't had any problems with so far.

Secondary was for bittorent'ing.

throw7··on Mike Tomlin spent 12 years building a Minecraft city
Thanks for the link... I didn't watch the whole thing as I resonated when he said 'entertainment is for detaching from life'. After hearing that I got it. That really is the problem with a lot of the "AAA" "Art" being produced today.
throw7··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
"Focus follows mouse" is what I use to keep the file manager from popping up when click-dragging files.

The biggest problem with UX developers is they know better than you AND force you into their paradigm. They came on the scene and decided "Choice is Bad" coupled with "Our way or the highway".

I've decided to be frozen in time with MATE (basically gnome 2). I have problems with it, but I've realized I don't want to be hit with surprise! on upgrades.

throw7··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Not if there was a clear and present danger. Note: I don't believe there was one (maybe someone convinced Trump there was); this seems to be more a "Shock & Awe" mission for political change a'la New American Century and has worked out similarly so far.
throw7··on I don't like passkeys
I have said before, I'm personally not interested using "Something I have"/"device bound" as an authentication factor. I'm also not interested in the sync "workarounds" that store keys in the cloud.

People have replied it's possible to extract the private key, but it's not clear to me that that's usable (maybe it is I don't know). It's certainly not in line with what passkey devs want people to do and not do, so I'm not interested in "fighting" against the "flow" so to speak.

I'm happy with TOTP, as I can manage and use the codes where I want, under my control.

throw7··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
It's a "feature" that you can't call google to help with getting "locked out":

"For your security, you can't call Google for help to sign into your account. We don’t work with any service that claims to provide account or password support. Do not give out your passwords or verification codes."

for the future: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/7684753

throw7··on A Beginner's Deep Dive Guide to Entra Passkeys
"Something you have"/"device bound" is not what I want if I don't control it. In the case of passkeys, I don't have access to the private key, so I consider that not controllable by me.

I'm happy to be wrong if I am able to extract and import the private keys (it's what I do with TOTP now), but my understanding is designers of passkeys explicitly don't want users access to their own privkeys so they can tie them to physical objects. I get that, I don't want that.

So passkeys are not something I'll ever use or useful or convenient to me.

throw7··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
The argument from the article is when things go wrong (as what happened w/ Taylor), the damage is widespread, whereas damage is contained locally.
throw7··on Seven books I keep close because I love them
NIV is what I grew up with and I kind of tired of it because of that... I have a soft spot for the KJV/NKJV.
throw7··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
Good article. It's a sober look at where we are at.

We lost a lot of strong privacy rights we had with landlines when we shifted to cell phones.

We're actually slowly creeping into pre-crime territory. You could have AI searching for possible pre-crime candidates based on unknown identity in the area, disparate pattern to usually movements, etc.

throw7··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good if you ask the right questions
"...the model may give different advice even when the underlying question is the same."

Isn't this the point of LLMs? If not it would be deterministic and that's not "new" and/or "exciting".

throw7··on John C. Dvorak has died
It seems a lot of people that read about their bio on wikipedia feel the same way. In fact, it's hard not to be suspicious of those that don't.
throw7··on Most Americans say "not in my backyard" to AI data centers
I heard about one in northern virginia which seems to be the front lines in this debate. It has onsite power generation which seems to be going 24/7 which is positively awful if you have to live next to that.

throw7··on A better way to tie your gym shorts. (Or any drawstring) [video]
I just go under and over one more time in the initial step of tying a traditional "shoelace" knot. That gives a little more friction on the initial tightening draw to keep it in place, then just finish it as normal.

I've tried alternatives, but in the end keeping it simple is what I prefer.

Just tried it. Still broken. Maps doesn't respond at all now. I get the beep that maps hears my "hey google", but that's it now.

> I see. So you intentionally broke the feature, now you complain about it being broken.

nope. that was a recent thing when they forced gemini on the phone. woke up one day hearing a different voice and then went searching how to disable that. maps has always been borked.
