throwaway2048··on Valve is testing ARM64 support for popular games
all valve games are linux native, as are lots of steam releases
throwaway2048··on Square where Julius Caesar was killed opens to the public in Rome
Imperator (in English Emperor) was a title specifically invented by Augustus to avoid the title king. It might be roughly translated as "Commander", in a military sense.
throwaway2048··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
At a certain point this kind of stuff becomes unfalsifiable, but the steady erosion of hard won worker rights and laws, as well as wages still fits in pretty nicely with his theories about end stage capitalism.

He certainly did not foresee the rise of the welfare state, but that doesn't mean the end of capitalism is going to be much different, its pretty easy to see how things are following the same trajectory in the end.

throwaway2048··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
the best thing about them is you can constantly schedule large stock sales, and just cancel the ones that don't favour you.

Look ma, no inside information.

throwaway2048··on Amazon is no longer allowing downloading Kindle Unlimited titles via USB
It needs to be cracked first, which hasn't happened yet.
throwaway2048··on Qualcomm says ARM to prohibit proximity of CPU and 3rd-party modules in one chip
because ARM was founded as a joint venture that included Apple, its extremely likely they have special terms.
throwaway2048··on Adventures with Verizon FiOS IPv6
DNS is generally looked up once, on ruleset initalization, there is no way a firewall is going to look up DNS every single time a rule is referenced. Since DNS here is changing constantly, this is unhelpful.
throwaway2048··on “The joy of sharing has been driven from me“
Dropbox has nothing to do with open source communities, nor is HN an open source community.
throwaway2048··on How Hong Kong became a police state
Not sure we agree on a shared reality if you think even literally every single person in Hong Kong owning a gun is going to much of anything stop the CCP.
throwaway2048··on “The joy of sharing has been driven from me“
What does dropbox have to do with "open source communities"
throwaway2048··on FBI: Stolen PII and deepfakes used to apply for remote tech jobs
Who says they can't do the job? It would be easy for a tech-knowledgeable scammer to interview at 100 companies, collect 100 pay-cheques and then dissapear.
throwaway2048··on Valve’s Steam Deck makes a brilliant case against walled gardens
Valve is a privately held company (owned by its employees) that makes ridiculous amounts of money, has no real incentive to sell, and Gabe Newell has publicly stated many times in the past that Valve selling out is extremely unlikely, and some kind of hostile takeover is virtually impossible.

Newell said that there was a better chance that Valve would “disintegrate,” its independent-minded workers scattering, than that it would ever be sold.

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/technology/valve-a-video-...

The difference here between Valve and most all of the infamous tech buyouts of history is Valve has no VCs looking to cash out who get final say, or public investors looking to maximize returns.

throwaway2048··on Bolt has a cool web interface and they really don't want you to use it
I'm about 90% sure that reddit is going to pull a twitter and kill off API access so apps like Apollo no longer function.
throwaway2048··on Bitcoin’s nosedive through the $20k mark is a Minsky Moment for crypto
Considering how many multi billion dollar corporations, investments and entire market sectors have been blown out by easily proven, easily deduced fraud that somehow ends up lasting years, or even decades before blowing up, I place less faith in "the best weighing machine ever devised" than you I think.
throwaway2048··on A religious sect landed Google in a lawsuit
I very much doubt companies are going to pay for your lawyers to sue them with.
throwaway2048··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
I somehow doubt that Microsoft has any pressing need to return profits from the python LSP
throwaway2048··on End-of-life smartphone? Penguins at PostmarketOS aim to revive it
Qualcomm effectively has a near-monopoly on the concept of a cellular radio, especially on the high end, so they really don't have to bend for anyone, even a little.
throwaway2048··on FTC acts against private equity firm’s acquisition of veterinary clinics
HN is not a free speech platform, nobody, not the users or the moderators, is obligated to give stories exposure.
throwaway2048··on Temporary pause of Bitcoin withdrawals on Binance
no automatic blockchain contract can provide you with USD
throwaway2048··on Twitter plans to comply with Musk’s demands for data
Was that before or after he hired a PI to investigate said person to see if he could find any dirt to defame him further, after continuing to double down on the pedophile accusations, further calling him a child rapist, and marrying a 12 year old.

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/elon-musk-hired...

Doesn't sound like a one off lightly lobbed, 1 in 50000 fluke to me.

throwaway2048··on Twitter plans to comply with Musk’s demands for data
Its ok to not defend bad behaviour from people you otherwise admire.
throwaway2048··on Twitter plans to comply with Musk’s demands for data
Musk pretty much waived all contingencies, the contract is public and easily viewed, that's why twitter was willing to agree so quickly in the first place.
throwaway2048··on Big Oil Is Suing Countries to Block Climate Action
Generally speaking governments, unless bound by treaty (and not even then really) are completely free to ignore the results of (most) lawsuits https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_immunity
throwaway2048··on Much philanthropy is a routinized exchange between salaried bureaucrats
Governments aren't the only people in power in modern America, billionaire (philanthropist or otherwise) hold as much or more power than any politician.
throwaway2048··on Useless Use of "dd" (2015)
linux absolutely still does this FWIW, its one of the reasons that swap is a net negative.
throwaway2048··on YC W22 Stablegains is being sued for losing $42M in funds from 4878 customers
The fact those returns aren't guaranteed is a big part of why they are so high to begin with. Credit card debt is unsecured (no collateral put up to be seized in the event of a default), creditors can walk away from the debt and the issuer will never receive a cent.
throwaway2048··on Will Japan run on ammonia? Major chemical firms want to build the infrastructure
NOx are industrially useful and profitable to scrub out at large scale (and relatively easy too, just pass exhaust gasses through water) because it generates nitric acid, which is an extremely useful and relatively expensive chemical that is the basis for vast amounts of industrial processes. So the use of ammonia in power plants is relatively unproblematic, in fact I would not be surprised if tuning ammonia based power plants to produce the most amount of NOx possible was the most economic choice.

As a bonus, nitric acid can be directly used to create fertilizers, which is one of the central usages of the Haber–Bosch process.

throwaway2048··on Warpgate: Smart SSH bastion that works with any SSH client
Id trust old software written in a memory unsafe language that has a sterling track record over new software written in a safer language that has not much of a track record at all.
