I see people are very enervated to defeat trump. just try to get alone with your neighbor. I promise it's not as scary as it seems.

I'm a coder. But software sales are very unnatural—data wants to be free, baby!
throwaway27448··on The AI Boom May Be Sowing Seeds of Another Financial Crisis
Sowing the seeds or failing to paper over? Pretending this is new is baffling.
throwaway27448··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
Does it not manage logical volumes?
throwaway27448··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
> It doesn't really do everything that a real LVM does though.

It manages logical volumes. Any quibbling is a matter of degree.

throwaway27448··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
For those of you who have never heard of this, it's macos's LVM. Why they didn't just refer to it as LVM is beyond me.
throwaway27448··on Scaling Git at OpenAI
I have full faith in LLMs to produce code that does something (whether or not it's desired or expected). I have little faith that the engineers (or MBAs) have any clue what they're doing. It'll be interesting to see what parts still exist in ten years and what parts they'll have to light on fire to contain bad assumptions.
throwaway27448··on Scaling Git at OpenAI
How would you know?
throwaway27448··on Scaling Git at OpenAI
Sure, but you also don't know what your LLM is doing without running into these same limitations. So how is this an improvement?
throwaway27448··on Scaling Git at OpenAI
Technical details aside, this volume is ridiculous. How on earth do they see this kind of "growth" as an asset and not a liability?
throwaway27448··on Show HN: Subvocal – Talk to your computer without making noise
The politics of using technology in social circumstances is an emphasis for sure. I'm specifically thinking of Olhado recording Marcão's physical abuse of Novinha with his bionic eye.
throwaway27448··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
Huh. I guess I just never viewed coding as a competitive sport.
throwaway27448··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
Advantage at what? Enjoying life?
throwaway27448··on Postgres 19 is late because so many more bugs are being found now
We could really use a lot more luddites tbh. Doesn't seem very applicable here tho.

That's precisely my point.
throwaway27448··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I think this is quite common in tv where the relationship among writer, director, actor evolve over the seasons.
throwaway27448··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
Surely this is straight fraud?
throwaway27448··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Yes it becomes space liberalism rather than space communism.
throwaway27448··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I disagree. Not only did he continually & substantially contribute to Picard's character, it clearly aligns with his own values and ethics as demonstrated over and over in interviews. Why not both? That seems like the obviously best perspective.

The police and flock cameras are there regardless of how people vote lol. Who would bother to pitch flock cameras to people and why?

One of the least democratic and accountable institutions in america, btw, along with the courts.
throwaway27448··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
> Generic college degree does not get into the upper crust

I was referring to private college degrees. Regardless, who you know and how much capital you can access matters many of orders of magnitude more than the text on your transcript or your actual existence

throwaway27448··on My favourite PowerMac is a Nintendo Wii
I don't disagree, but the wii remote market was/is the absolute worst console device market.
throwaway27448··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
I agree! But the way you ensure this is by paying. This is not an unusual market shape. Realistically wikipedia provides more educational opportunity than any university on the globe did in the 80s—association with education brand is largely a performance. You don't really need to pay anything to be competitive with other people excluded from upper crust society. I am unfortunately moving in the direction that wealth dominates all other factors of human behavior.
throwaway27448··on Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites
Hard to imagine this is actually a concern for game makers. Decompilation aside, AI can only produce shallow visual mimicry. If you were to actually try to enjoy these games you'd be miserable nearly instantly.

Rookie move to fight this legally! What replaces it actually will be engaging and competitive. Palworld is just the beginning....

throwaway27448··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
> I usually interpret this to mean 0.1% or similar

I more meant the top 10% of american wealth. This includes the upper part of the PMC.

oh noes
throwaway27448··on Pico CSS is no longer maintained
Look all I can say is now that we have LLMs, you'd have to put a gun to my head to target the browser. Worst application platform imaginable. Somehow it's also become a pretty bad document browser.
throwaway27448··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
It's access to the upper crust of society that you're paying for, not an education. Just pursue scholarships and state schools (which all provide globally competitive programs) and the chances this is the second-highest purchase you'll ever make will be extremely low.
throwaway27448··on LLM Voice
What if? But this certainly doesn't describe LLMs.
