throwaway35784··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
It's not ideology. It's Pavlovian science. If you reward behavior, you get more of it.

This is precisely the way a market for lemons works. Scumbags like you thinking it's ok to prey on the less knowledgeable human beings we live with.
throwaway35784··on A Non-Business Case for Supporting Old Browsers
No. You have to build on the new browser, because that's what is on your new computer, then hope it runs on the old computer with the old browser.
throwaway35784··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
You're not a fan of them but you'll gladly pay them your money? Sounds like righteous hypocrisy to me.

I'm not a fan of them and I've never paid them any money, neither one. They are scum bags.

How will the world improve if you reward what you don't like?

throwaway35784··on A Non-Business Case for Supporting Old Browsers
The article is wrong. It absolutely does cost money and time to test on old browsers. You need multiple computers or vms set up. You don't build websites using old computers running ie6. so you have load the site on that old browser after you write the code.

It's an obvious fact to anyone who does front end web development.

throwaway35784··on A Non-Business Case for Supporting Old Browsers
As with all things it's a cost benefit analysis. It costs money to support old browsers and a lot of money doesn't come from them do do the math.

I was trying to buy movie tickets online the other day.I tried Firefox then Firefox without ad blockers, then ie, then edge, then chrome on two different desk top machines.

Then my gf bought them on her phone browser.

Thanks mobile first development. How much money must you be costing your adherents?

throwaway35784··on When will Google shut down Stadia?
Aside: Costumers, er prospects rather, love my products until the end when they ask, "so... how many people work there?"

As though that would indicate how likely it is that the product will have a long life. They are telling me with that question they want my software for a long time. But when they hear the answer they bail.

I still don't know how to get over that hump.

I like the style of the code. Can talk about your inspiration for it? I haven't seen Javascript written in that way before. It's clean but, at least to me, unintuitive. What is your background?
throwaway35784··on Google to restrict political adverts worldwide
No. They are restricting just one type of targeting.

>Google is extending a ban on political campaigns targeting advertising at people based on their supposed political leanings.

>It said political groups would soon only be able to target ads based on "general categories" such as age, gender and rough location.

throwaway35784··on How to Kickstart and Scale a Marketplace
> I’m frequently asked about what Airbnb did right

This is the problem. They didn't do it right. They broke TOSes. They committed fraud. They misled home owners and renters. They broke hospitality laws. They broke licensing and employment laws. They evaded taxes. They bait n switched customers. They enabled more fraud from their market place participants.

They didn't get big by doing things right.

throwaway35784··on Senators ask if Facebook 'really' lets users opt out of location tracking
Why is everyone answering the question like I'm talking about the police? Is it legal for any person off the street to install a GPS tracker on someone else's car?
throwaway35784··on One Reason the U.S. Military Can’t Fix Its Own Equipment
That perspective on the law is a non starter. It's just not true. Picking and choosing what is okay to infringe is by definition being an arbiter of copyright law.
throwaway35784··on Senators ask if Facebook 'really' lets users opt out of location tracking
What does the 4th amendment say about non law enforcement persons installing a GPS tracker on my car.

Can I go and buy a gps tracker and install it on your car? If not, why is Facebook or Google or whoever allowed to install one on my phone?

It had nothing to do with the 4th amendment. I can buy a GPS tracker on amazon right now. You don't have to be a cop to install a tracker.

throwaway35784··on One Reason the U.S. Military Can’t Fix Its Own Equipment
So because it's worth it to you it shouldn't be pirated? As if your opinion on what laws are worthwhile to follow are somehow better than the actual law?

Nothing should be pirated.

throwaway35784··on Senators ask if Facebook 'really' lets users opt out of location tracking
Why don't laws about installing a gps tracker on a car apply to installing a gps tracker on my person?

Facebook is exactly breaking the law at least in many states.

Its so clearly illegal and wrong. I really don't understand why someone doesn't stop them.

Can I form a corporation, employ myself, then act with impunity too?

throwaway35784··on Some users say they're getting rid of Fitbit because they don't trust Google
Do users have access to the audit logs of those who have accessed their information?
throwaway35784··on Some users say they're getting rid of Fitbit because they don't trust Google
You're turning a factual story into fake news.

>but how many are actually doing it? A lot? A few?

No one knows except Google and fitbit. As it is, is exactly "some"and since a lot of fitbit owners don't tweet, precisely because they care about privacy, the actual number is almost definitely a multiple of the tweeters.

What word other than "some" should they have used?

The average person in the top 1% in China has over $2.1 million CAD. That's 14 million people, which is half the population of Canada.

Canadian homes are their safe deposit boxes. They buy homes in Canada, one of the safest places in the world to protect their assets from the Chinese govt.

They walk into a casino with a suit case of dirty cash, then walk right out and it's clean, Tax free money. Then they buy a house.

No wonder locals can't afford a home. A studio apartment costs $500,000.

Layers of understanding. That's what we are talking about. How many Layers must be understood to know something is broken? Or what's broke about it?

It's broke. I know that. I don't think continuing down a broken path is gonna fix it.

throwaway35784··on Do You Know Who Owns Your Debt?
What is the dollar value of that behavior relative to other behavior? In other words don't neglect to consider opportunity costs.
throwaway35784··on Do You Know Who Owns Your Debt?
I believe, as did my single mother, that women going to work hurt families also. She said before she died, women "shot themselves in the foot and made it much harder on single incomes to support a family. Women always had a choice to work. Now they don't."

Maybe you have something wrong. Maybe it wasn't more rewarding to go to work. People on their death beds don't say I wish I'd gone to work more. No. They say they wish they'd spent more time with family.

throwaway35784··on Basecamp Co-Founder David Heinemeier Hansson On: The Founding of Ethical SaaS
The key is to care about more than just money.
throwaway35784··on Basecamp Co-Founder David Heinemeier Hansson On: The Founding of Ethical SaaS
The discussing of ethics is at the very end, summarized by the influence of investors:

> The investors are optimizing for growth rates because that’s how you get the big multiple and that’s how you get the biggest bang for an IPO. I’m not a big fan of these methods, because most of the time, the large valuations are based on the premise and promise that these companies will dominate the market that they’re in, capture a monopoly and then one day, once they have eradicated every competitor and become the top dog that dominates everyone, they can raise prices because customers will have nowhere to go and that’s when they make money. Is that an aspirational place for us to be, that we should be cheering on monopolists who are cornering markets and then when we have eradicated all competitors, they raise rents? That’s not a very appealing prospect to me. I’d much rather see healthy marketplaces where there’s lots of different providers.

If you want to be ethical, don't take money from those who care about nothing but getting more money.

Greed is not good.

throwaway35784··on Tetrachromats: people who see colors invisible to most of us (2014)
I think envy is instinctual in gregarious animals. It's a mechanism for social balancing. You can't stop the feeling except to be at the top of the social hierarchy. You can control your behavior when you feel it though.

You can practice by surrounding yourself with people better than you. Play games with people better than you. Find mentors.

Grow as a person so you love yourself rather than envy others. Recognize that almost everyone has something you don't. Better than you at something.

Reflect on the great things about yourself. Remember who you are. Where you started.

Be good. Be true to yourself. Develop your moral code. Treat all with respect and love. Including you with all your imperfections.
