throwaway384034··on Anthropic is rapidly accelerating AI development amid slowdown calls
Might want to read the room... Things are not looking good if they don't accelerate. The article also only mentions a 2x gain from last year. Hardly anything that signals an exponential increase.
throwaway384034··on $2.5T has been wiped from US stocks
Looks like the party is over, now for the hangover.
throwaway384034··on US election results are being suppressed on HN
"Dems win" is generic and boring. If there is something specific you want to discuss like sentiment towards data centres and how that might have shaped voting then I highly doubt that will be flagged if there is a thoughtful article on it. Those are the articles that will lead to the most interesting discussions.

>Since 1946, the president's party has lost seats in the House of Representatives in 18 out of 20 midterm elections.

You shouldn't treat this bigger than it is. Democrats still have a lot of work to do.

throwaway384034··on Democrats Rout GOP
It is hard to be 'anti-establishment' when you are the establishment. That's one of the reasons why Trump won, lost, won the election.
throwaway384034··on It is pathetic that there is no news about the midterms on the front page
Sadly the majority won't last. Democrats still lack an identity and an objective and the number 1 issue for Americans is the economy which there is no easy fix for. DEI, virtue signalling, immigration is not going to solve economic issues and will lead to a flip in 2030.
throwaway384034··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
Are we still doing this thing where we attribute success in one area to completely different fields? You may as well elect Opus 5.5, seen as it is already superhuman at certain tasks.
throwaway384034··on Intel plunges 25%, triggers global chip rout on bleak outlook
Google is catching up, not leading.
throwaway384034··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
Yes, being surrounded by smart and motivated people is a huge bonus. But if your classmate doesn't even know fractions, it looks like you won't be getting that either.
throwaway384034··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
There was nothing you couldn't have already learned from a book. Many professors were never even great at teaching and are employed for research.

Attending college as a student was always partly about status and once the standards of an institution drops so does the signal that comes from holding a degree. It is only natural that people will see college as less worthy of an investment.

throwaway384034··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
It is not just financial, it is a decline in academic standards: https://nypost.com/2026/08/16/us-news/uc-berkeley-math-prof-...
throwaway384034··on Intel plunges 25%, triggers global chip rout on bleak outlook
We had an increasing cadence of releases for frontier models but got nothing in October. Opus 5.5 was released over a month ago and Fable has had no updates in a while, just sneak peeks of what they are achieving internally.
throwaway384034··on Intel plunges 25%, triggers global chip rout on bleak outlook
"Pacing the frontier" into a great depression. The safety maxxers will be the death of the field.
throwaway384034··on AI Layoffs – The Greatest Lie of the Decade
Don't get me wrong, I think we still need seniors who have engineering experience pre-AI and those with domain expertise. But the topic was entry level workers.
throwaway384034··on AI Layoffs – The Greatest Lie of the Decade
> If software students also take the time to master agentic development, the career opportunities opening up in large-scale orchestration of enterprise software creation will soon be immense, and carry the same high-salary dreams traditional software carried prior to a few months ago.

This is just based on nothing and is potentially really bad advice for young people.

throwaway384034··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
>It has always struck me as absurd that America is so accessible to Chinese nationals.

This is what I was responding to. I'm trying to figure out how it is nonsense because India has a large population.

India already makes up like 70% of H1Bs.

throwaway384034··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
Maybe monogamy is not natural for men?
throwaway384034··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
China is high IQ. It is one of the top countries you will want to brain drain from.
throwaway384034··on [dead]
There seems to be a direct correlation with how likely your game is to fail and how much virtue signalling is included.
throwaway384034··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
Stepping outside and travelling really gives you a perspective on how much of a bubble online forums are.
throwaway384034··on AI is ruining haunted houses
Cultural stagnation can exist without technology but technology can also contribute to it.
throwaway384034··on AI is ruining haunted houses
If we had the exact same technology in the 80s would we have had all the classics we do now or just a remix of things previously created?
throwaway384034··on AI is ruining haunted houses
Hmmm so when CEOs use this excuse to fire devs it is bad but not for cutting out artists?
throwaway384034··on France asked ISPs to prepare temporary DNS blocks for major social platforms
Protest - A protest is a public expression, statement, or act of strong objection, disapproval, or dissent against a policy, law, action, or idea.

Peaceful - Peaceful is an adjective meaning free from war, violence, conflict, or disturbance, as well as quiet, calm, and untroubled

Very few protests are truly "peaceful". There will always be a grey area with protests that make them controversial and difficult to manage while "peaceful protest" is usually used as a thought terminating term. Though riots are different and probably are made up of opportunists.

throwaway384034··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
At the moment some people are in the bargaining phase trying to figure out how to stay employed and what their value is with AI and some people are in denialism phase which is becoming increasingly delusional. Others have already left software development for other corporate roles because they already accepted what is coming but I feel this is the minority voice online because they don't want to shake the beehive or want to get ahead of the curve themselves because it won't be nice when everyone tries to transition together.
throwaway384034··on Root shell on Samsung TV
The Overton window shifted on Israel, probably won't return to what you want it to anytime soon.
throwaway384034··on Why So Many Men Aren't Working
The job market is filled with fake jobs, 10 round interviews, AI screening and even AI interviewers. The degree has lost its signal, jobs get >100 applicants, hiring is broken and many are not interested in underemployment. Articles like this is why I am not surprised anti-establishment is on the rise. Blame literally anything apart from the problem.
throwaway384034··on US envoy Witkoff to Putin: 'You are a humanitarian ... I salute that'
Everyone is acutely aware these are performative gestures but there is still a sucker that ends up being taken advantage of.
throwaway384034··on Will it be a golden age or a dark age for mathematics (and science)?
Nice source. Transhumanism and believing in AI consciousness does not mix well. We are already being told how we should and shouldn't treat AI. Someone who wants to use AI to boost the abilities of people, puts people first and treats AI as a tool.
throwaway384034··on Will it be a golden age or a dark age for mathematics (and science)?
Recursive self-improvement, which is underway will crush anything that is verifiable. The only place people have for now is non-verifiable work which is harder to find in maths than other domains.
