throwaway48540··on What the hell happened to Devin AI?
It's not just non technical people. Even programmers around me are worried. Some think AI will replace programmers soon, some think partially, mostly everybody thinks that a lot of stuff will change soon.

I am personally not worried. Any outcome is great. Either I keep a well paid job and it becomes even more well paid, or AI is so good that there aren't any jobs at all anymore, which sounds good too.

Let's define soon - I understand it as "within a decade or so" in this context.

Is that all you hear? I don't hear that at all. People around me didn't change the battery when it was easy either. I was always like an alien when I suggested it.
throwaway48540··on Using GPT-4 to generate 100 words consumes up to 3 bottles of water
Do you need to run all experts at once?
throwaway48540··on Porsche's idea for a six-stroke internal combustion engine
That's not entirely true, most electric cars sold today have a driveshaft, clutch and gearbox.
throwaway48540··on Apple Shares Full iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Repair Manuals
We have our own phone, it's the iPhone. I paid the money for it because I wanted the full package. You can buy your own kind of phone that's not the full package. Many different vendors are making that.

You did not explain anything, you just said that something would happen, without any reasoning why or why no counter effects would happen.

Yes, both sides of the debate use scifi as facts, I agree. I don't think the other side does it more than you do, though.

throwaway48540··on Apple Shares Full iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Repair Manuals
Yes, I do.

Use USB-C to connect a hub with display and mouse, copy data over internet.
throwaway48540··on Porsche's idea for a six-stroke internal combustion engine
Lol, I really want to see a 150-year old EURO6 200kw diesel engine coupled with a 150-year old 9-speed automatic dual-clutch allowing me to drive on the 150-year old roads for 4 liters per 100 km at German highway speeds.

BTW, electric cars are older technology than ICE cars.

throwaway48540··on Ask HN: One-man SaaS, how do you attract customers?
I'd be very nervous if somebody told me they will host my business data or otherwise provide a service to me forever for a single time payment. Maybe that's what makes your customers go away.
throwaway48540··on Using GPT-4 to generate 100 words consumes up to 3 bottles of water
Consumes? As in, the water disappears?

Also, it's pretty incredible. A very comparable job can be done with a local model on my MacBook Air in few minutes. How many bottles of water is that? That's so gigantic, immeasurable difference in efficiency I can't help but think the article is totally wrong.

BTW I used ChatGPT today. If I didn't, I would have to spend a week doing menial work. Instead, the job was done in few hours. How many bottles of water it saved from being pissed away by me? None, I still piss the same amount of water, but now I have a better ratio of job done vs water pissed.

What a weird way to measure something...

It really isn't. Just 100 years ago "earning a living" meant growing food themselves on fields behind the house for the majority of humans.
throwaway48540··on Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated
That's my point. Crazy economists are not responsible for the damage, it's the elected people who listened to them and followed through. To create an intentionally extreme parallel, imagine they have chosen a group of idk, satanists. Would you blame the group of satanists for being satanists, or the people in charge of a country who contacted a group of satanists for advice?
throwaway48540··on Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated
So it is the elected representatives who are responsible for choosing them and implementing whatever they suggested?
throwaway48540··on Three Mile Island nuclear plant restart in Microsoft AI power deal
The economic system is not set in stone. If everyone is irrelevant to it, the economic system becomes irrelevant to everyone, and a parallel system gradually replaces it.
throwaway48540··on Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated
How could they possibly do that?
throwaway48540··on Foundations: Why Britain Has Stagnated
What is shady about them? Are they criminals?

What exactly is the problem? That they're using any energy at all? Well, I don't like that people have lights on after 7 PM...
throwaway48540··on Three Mile Island nuclear plant restart in Microsoft AI power deal
You're claiming it would be terrible for the rest of us, without supporting that assumption in any way. It's not a fact, pseudo scifi action movies don't count as facts.
throwaway48540··on Gaining access to anyones Arc browser without them even visiting a website
I don't see an issue, using something like Firebase is what a smart engineer would do. Just this one piece of logic is a problem.
throwaway48540··on Stop Designing Your Web Application for Millions of Users When You Dont Have 100
The middle approach would be implementing the infrastructure in a basic way that is simplistic, but provides benefit and can be expanded.
throwaway48540··on Stop Designing Your Web Application for Millions of Users When You Dont Have 100
I really don't think that's the case. If you ask a CEO/CTO of a startup, he would fire the guy who did the latter instead of the middle approach. Longer term stability and development velocity are very important concerns in engineering management. This is pure inexperience - it wouldn't take too long to setup for an experienced engineer anyways, they probably did it 5 times last month and have a library of knowledge and templates. I can't call a guy who isn't capable of setting up a project this way swiftly without seeing it as a problem "senior".
throwaway48540··on Starlink's new satellites emit 30x more radio interference than before
At my cottage... Used to pay $60 for 30 Mb/s fixed LTE. Now I pay $60 for min. 80, usually 200 Mb/s.
throwaway48540··on Starlink's new satellites emit 30x more radio interference than before
For all we know, the solution to Fermi paradox are people who insist on tradition and not upsetting the status quo instead of taking advantage of the possibilities of truly global high speed internet coverage for low prices.

I agree this should be fixed if it's possible. But if it meant 2x the price of the subscription, I'm pretty fine with them keeping it as it is. Global internet is just way too good for humanity to not do it.

throwaway48540··on Starlink's new satellites emit 30x more radio interference than before
Too bad there isn't a tool to disable the person with the Flipper.
throwaway48540··on Starlink's new satellites emit 30x more radio interference than before
It halved the price of high speed internet in rural locations in Europe.
throwaway48540··on Cops lure pedophiles with AI pics of teen girl. Ethical triumph or new disaster?
Some people argue that you need actual CSAM to produce AI CSAM. I don't think that's true, but in that case, it'd be different because it's a result of abuse, while books are not (directly).

throwaway48540··on Glass Antenna Turns windows into 5G Base Stations
Yes, that should be possible.
throwaway48540··on Glass Antenna Turns windows into 5G Base Stations
Connecting the nodes through a common backbone shouldn't be necessary in a mesh network. Nodes can provide connectivity by relaying even if they don't have access to internet directly.
