timemct··on Crypto in 2026: Oh, This Is the Bad Place
You're not accounting for all of the government contracts that US taxpayers fund.
timemct··on Windows 11's Patch Tuesday nightmare gets worse
I'm pretty sure that's been a shortcut well before W11, W7 iirc.
timemct··on Can we talk about the rude installers not asking for installation locations?
You've probably been asked about it, but it's often phrased differently than simply asking where to install the app. "Would you like to install theAppInQuestion for all users of this computer (install in /Applications) or just you(install in ~/Applications)?"

'They' is also used when gender is unknown and has been for a long, long time.

Person_1: I found this great blogger whose writing I think you'd love.

Person_2: Oh, really?! What do they write about?

timemct··on Trying to teach in the age of the AI homework machine
>Our school converted a computer lab to a programming lab. Computers in the lab have editors/compilers/interpreters, and whitelist documentation, plus an internal server for grading and submission. No internet access otherwise. We've used it for one course so far with good results, and extending it to more courses in the fall.

As an higher education (university) IT admin who is responsible for the CS program's computer labs and is also enrolled in this CS program, I would love to hear more about this setup, please & thank you. As recently as last semester, CS professors have been doing pen'n paper exams and group projects. This setup sounds great!

timemct··on [dead]
The term, “unreliable narrator,” comes to mind.
timemct··on Supreme Court blocks controversial Purdue Pharma opioid settlement
Save for at least one current sitting Justice: Amy Coney Barrett. They only had ~3 years of experience being a judge, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals (2017–2020), before being nominated to the Supreme Court. Yes, they have experience in other law related roles, however your comment explicitly stated, "...fairly long careers as acting judges...," so that is what I'm speaking to.
timemct··on VCs aren’t your friends
Even if you love what you do at your day job... The cobbler's kids go without shoes, and the chef's fridge is full of condiments & takeout boxes.
timemct··on Three women contract HIV from dirty "vampire facials" at unlicensed spa
It sounds like it might've helped prevent even more infections. Stopping a bad practices doesn't change the past, but it can help influence the future.
timemct··on Tesla recalls all cybertrucks for faulty accelerator pedals
The air compressor trick works great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6SsqBcpXZU
timemct··on Why Is the Press Attacking Home Schoolers?
Problems with both education systems can exist at the same time. As a society, we can try to address the issues with both home schooling and the public education system, not just one or the other.
timemct··on Making my own bed sensor
Some d/w sensors will even have dry contacts specifically meant for wiring in whatever open/close type thing you'd like to use, like a pressure pad.
timemct··on Oink's Pink Palace
My memory of that specific detail is a bit fuzzy, however I’m pretty sure it was a staff pick. That or via the fantastic similar artists feature at the bottom of an artist’s page, the star/spoke map that was user generated/voted: thicker the line between artists, the more user votes that similarity had gotten.
timemct··on Oink's Pink Palace
If you are the same Solar Fields I’m thinking about, I’m pretty sure I discovered your/their music, specifically the album Until We Meet The Sky, via what.cd. Cheers!
timemct··on The Mysterious 50 Ohm Impedance: Where It Came from and Why We Use It (2021)
Especially when you think about what electronics are made of: things mined from the earth. They made rocks compute for us!
timemct··on San Jose police union executive director charged with smuggling fentanyl into US
I think that's been the practice for sometime now; we had to do the same thing at Puerto Vallarta's airport a few years back.
timemct··on Judge finds Google destroyed evidence and repeatedly lied to the court [pdf]
I’ve often thought that when a company, especially one as big as Alphabet/Google, gets fined, it’s simply seen as an operating cost and not as a motivator to do better.
timemct··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
> There's an entire cottage industry built around people etching their seed phrases on steel plates for people to (I'm not kidding) bury them like they're gold in the 1800s.

"I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted." - The Well of Ascension, by Brandon Sanderson

timemct··on Ubuntu 22.10 Kinetic Kudu
Nobara Project[1] helps with this. It is somewhat gaming-on-linux focused, but for some, like myself, that's a win. I use it on both my desktop (Intel CPU, AMD GPU) and my Thinkpad T480: works great on both.

timemct··on The messages that survived civilisation's collapse
Whenever I read something about leaving messages for future peoples, my mind drifts back to this Mistborn quote, "I write these words in steel, for anything not set in metal cannot be trusted."
timemct··on Most Americans support using the popular vote to decide U.S. presidents, data
One of the troubles with this argument is that it fundamentally assumes that people who live in cities don't care about people who live in rural areas. People are capable of having empathy and understanding of people who are not like themselves. We don't need to Other/make outsiders out of fellow citizens who have different lifestyles than us.
timemct··on $625M worth of ETH drained on Axie Infinity's Ronin Network
Decentralytes is perfect, thank you.
timemct··on AirPods don't “just work”
Yes, there is a listen with only one headphone feature.
timemct··on Burn My Windows
Years 2003(ish) to 2008(ish).
timemct··on Corded headphones are making an unexpected return
KZ, too.
timemct··on Windows 11’s first update makes AMD CPU performance even worse
I know it's a little petty, however not being able to move the taskbar has zeroed out any interest I had in using Windows 11. I'm a huge fan of moving the taskbar/dock to the left vertical side of the screen, especially so on a 16:9 screen.
timemct··on Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite
I assume the third is for an Apple Watch.
timemct··on Tinder will introduce voluntary ID verification to reduce catfishing incidents
To add a data point to this, I'm happily married to someone I met on Tinder. Without the two of us using dating apps, there's a near zero chance that we would've met.
timemct··on Apple releases open source modules of Big Sur
That's pretty much what it was like when I was with their AppleCare group. During the hiring process, I was fully expecting a drug test (that never came).
timemct··on AirPods Max
It looks like they come with a USB-C to Lightning cable, so one can assume that the headphones have a Lightning port on 'em for charging.
