timmmmmmay··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
AA updated their benchmark a few days ago and haven't retested every model yet, you can scroll down the page and see those in the old benchmarks
timmmmmmay··on Read the letter the FBI sent MLK to try to convince him to kill himself (2014)
the modern internet has given everyone a higher level of immunity to this kind of thing now that it's in the background everywhere at all times; the FBI would need to step up their game today
timmmmmmay··on Muse Spark Open
43% of the US electrical grid runs on natural gas, it's the largest single source by a considerable margin.

timmmmmmay··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
it's a LEO constellation, the only way it can deliver Internet in the middle of the ocean is by using the inter-satellite lasers
timmmmmmay··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
I used it in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a Hawaiian Airlines flight two years ago, where have you been
timmmmmmay··on Fire at Starlink site in Bulgaria after suspected sabotage in Poland
always has been
timmmmmmay··on AI coding agents generate more code, but not more software
but I wanted to make that comment, I felt it was important
timmmmmmay··on The United Kingdom generates less electricity per person than in the 1970s
bro there are degrowth austerity leftists posting in this thread right now, it's not a Fox News caricature
timmmmmmay··on AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter
Anthropic is transparently trying to get any competition banned and I'm fucking sick of it.
timmmmmmay··on AI coding agents generate more code, but not more software
I'm completely uninterested in the opinion of a video game journalist on what does and doesn't work well in writing software. The author knows about as much about writing code as he knows about performing heart surgery
timmmmmmay··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
the author's web-dev job only ever existed because we didn't all stop using the web after the dotcom crash
timmmmmmay··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
author appears to think that at some point in the future we'll all agree to go back to how we were writing code in 2019. unclear why
timmmmmmay··on One month coding with GLM 5.3 Flash
"the talk of AI data centers' impact on the world" has been wildly exaggerated and you can see here that this is the least impact of any major new technology in the history of industrialization
timmmmmmay··on Transit rewards
you know there are jurisdictions outside of California that don't take multiple decades to add a bus line, right?

these aren't "good reasons" or unavoidable laws of nature or understandable tradeoffs. it's just a uniquely dysfunctional political system

timmmmmmay··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Look I wanted to like bsky but the fact is that their userbase has been doing as much rage and culture wars and engagement bait as any other. I mean look at what just happened the other day with the paint.net guy
timmmmmmay··on Check if a file was made with Claude
The CA law in link 4 clearly says it covers "image, video, and audio output", not text output. It's right in the second paragraph.
timmmmmmay··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
they took the sulfur out of the shipping fuel and everything accelerated very quickly. nobody's even talking about it anymore
timmmmmmay··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
no, you don't have to make up some non-idiotic argument that's kinda vaguely like the dumb one and substitute it in there. it's not necessary! nobody's making you do it and there's no benefit to anybody from doing it!
timmmmmmay··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
back when the USSR was still a going concern, there were zero American leftists claiming that it wasn't really communist. that only started happening after they failed
timmmmmmay··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
I'm not saying externalities don't exist, I'm saying that basically every time somebody makes an argument relying on the concept, there's no attempt to quantify the externalized cost, it's just a vibe. Just go upthread, the argument is just "the stuff you're buying is crap that I don't think you really need, therefore it should be more expensive, however much more it takes for you to stop buying it".

The economic concept implies that we're going to have an evidence-based discussion about how we're tracking specific dollar cost amounts of pollution or something, and then in practice that essentially never happens and it's just "I've decided you don't really need that thing you want"

timmmmmmay··on Hot Chips 2026: Applying High Bandwidth Flash (HBF)
Yeah, but how often is this? Certainly there are weird hobbyist edge cases that don't do well with this, that's true of anything, but a provider is loading weights once every few months
timmmmmmay··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Every time I see somebody make an argument about "externalities" it's never actually backed up with any fact-based analysis about the magnitude of them. It's always exclusively vibes-based, "this thing you like is too cheap, it should be prohibitively expensive to make up for the thing I just thought of"
timmmmmmay··on I gave Qwen 3.8 27B a reverse-engineering job and it finished in 30 minutes
Early attempts at this sort of thing definitely did, but these days the impact is minimal
timmmmmmay··on Malware infects Android-based automotive head unit firmware
no, the update servers at $sketchy_aliexpress_aftermarket_head_unit_company, probably somewhat easier
timmmmmmay··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
because that ended up being the case the last couple times this topic came up and now we've gotten wolf-cried

the part where the article avoids mentioning what book this was is a tell

timmmmmmay··on DeepSeek API Pricing Update
the neat thing about the models being open-weights is there's a dozen other providers on OpenRouter still at the old price, or lower
timmmmmmay··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
I'm sure their coverage on other topics is truthful and informative though and it's only the ones where you know a lot about the topic where it's all a bunch of bullshit
timmmmmmay··on llama.cpp
straightforward solution is probably Qwen3.6-27B-Q4 running on a used RTX 3090. price on those is unfortunately high, in fact so high that getting a new Radeon AI PRO R9700 might be a better deal

a solid step up from there is anything that can run Deepseek V4 Flash but the hardware ask there is a bit higher

timmmmmmay··on llama.cpp
so instead of downloading a script with curl and running it with bash, you should download it with git and run it with cmake? if you aren't reviewing the code between download and execution, what's the difference?
timmmmmmay··on Nvidia Nemotron 3.5 Lightning
you wouldn't be happy then either
