I believe you are mistaken about the timeline and details here. The $400m Tesla procurement was initiated under Biden. Trump actually cancelled it.

tjmehta··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
But will it replace search engine “frontends”? You -> ChatGPT -> Search Engine. Any examples of Chat GPT querying data live? I’m no AI expert.. but it feels like this would make a lot of sense.. it’s seems like what current voice assistants are doing right?
tjmehta··on Ask HN: How did my LastPass master password get leaked?
Do you ever store your LastPass in your clipboard? Malicious apps on some platforms can access your clipboard without your knowledge. Do you use a clipboard manager? Is it trustworthy? Does it store data safely on disk?

Good questions to ask yourself

tjmehta··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
I dunno.. if the coolant leak damaged the batteries, it could put the entire car at risk. I guess the owner should have the right to take that risk though, but not sure Tesla should be held accountable for the full car warranty.

tjmehta··on Show HN: GraphQL lib for real-time apps
Hello Zackify, author here. That’s a great question. I haven’t used Apollo in depth (since I started building this before it’s existance.) But Apollo is an opinionated GraphQL framework that includes the data-transport layer.

Primus-GraphQL is less opinionated and just provides a GraphQL data-transport layer (client and server). Primus-GraphQL also offers a network-layer for Relay (an opinionated GraphQL client framework that works well with React).

Since it is built on top of Primus it allows flexibility with data-protocol layer - from socket.io, socksjs, websockets, or even a custom implementation.

Hope that answers your question. Let me know if you have more :-)

tjmehta··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
Lol, nice, I wrote "pass-any" first. I then copied the code and replaced "or" w/ "and" to create "pass-all".

I will probably have go back and change this now that I know about it. In general though, not gonna a lie, I am not very concerned about micro performance optimizations.

tjmehta··on NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program?
Author of "is-positive-integer" here. I will admit the implementation is pretty funny, but I move-out all single-purpose utils out of projects to modules for a bunch of reasons. DRY is the most obvious one, but one that may be less obvious is for better testing.

I move out modules so I can write really nice tests for the independent of the projects I am using them in. Also, I tend to write projects w/ 100% test coverage, breaking out utils allows me to test projects easier and faster.

Also note, the implementation of this module changed a few times today. With it being open source and having the collaboration of other engineers, we ended up with a very performant version, and discovered interesting quirks about "safe integers" in JS.

tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
Disagree, is it very likely that `and` and `or` will always be used when either is required?
tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
I totally agree with this philosophy. It sounds especially great on paper. However, while in practice, adherence to the module pattern can become quite annoying for very small modules. Small modules usage throughout a project can change very quickly, because of this one may find themselves repeatedly adding a removing utility modules at a multiple times a day. Small breaks to npm install or remove small modules throughout your day can lead to a lot of wasted time (since it breaks your programming focus). Also, remembering which small module you used can be difficult (bc there may be many). I think there are pro's and con's to each strategy.. IMO I think the micro libraries are an exception to the rule, where grouping them together can be beneficial to developers.
tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
I definitely did that for a while, but eventually found it annoying. I know it's definitely better to package each of these as a separate module. But uses of each of the tiny modules like these can come and go very quickly and keeping the package.json up to date becomes tedious..
tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
I like this idea - just would be really annoying to maintain each module as a versioned dependency...
tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library

tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
Hey, thanks. Yah I kind've knew about this, and never got back to it. What do you think I should put in index.js?

I was thinking `throw new Error('You're doing it wrong');` :-P

tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
Was waiting for someone to say this. Checkout the examples - duplication is for functional usage only. Util methods are written to work well with JS internals like Array methods (eg. map). I should probably make this point more clear in the docs... Thanks!
tjmehta··on 101 – A JavaScript utility library
Love your well thought out feedback. 1) IMO ES5 is highly available now and when it isn't you can use shims. 2) Will definitely add other module systems on request. Currently works in the browser with browserify.
tjmehta··on SublimeGit: Full-featured Git integration for Sublime Text
Love this extension and have been using it for months. It doesn't quite offer the ability to do everything yet. But it does have an amazing interface for checking diffs of files, checking status (un/staged files), adding files and committing. It's such an improvement from the cli and much more convenient since you don't have to leave sublime. With it I have found myself committing more regularly, more accurately (not slopping multiple commits into one), and with better commit messages.
