tlammens··on Ask HN: What is the recommended way to create Windows desktop apps right now?
Not really future-proof... http://www.cnet.com/news/google-saying-buh-bye-to-chrome-app...
tlammens··on Habits of highly mathematical people
Come on, it's a perfect number!
tlammens··on Complexities of an infinite scroller
Is it me or is it impossible to scroll that page in Safari?
tlammens··on Meteorological winter aligns with December-January-February
Let's just move the 1st of January to the day the 'real' winter begins. Time... what an invention!
tlammens··on A persistent key-value server in 40 lines and a sad fact (2014)
Startup time in a server is a non-issue... Those processes keep running the whole time.
tlammens··on An Engineer Creates for Fun After a Lifetime of Workaday Rules
The French word for engineer is ingénieur, which originates from engigneor which has the same roots as the English word engineer...
tlammens··on Hawking: AI could end human race
It would be refreshing to see a line of reasoning instead of the "Person X is afraid of Y" articles.
tlammens··on Cursors
Hacker News? :)
tlammens··on 24, the Monster, and quantum gravity
You forget the square root: 5 is prime.
tlammens··on OS X Mavericks kernel_task eating 100% CPU
Worst cables ever... so far for the 'superior' hardware.

Prices are at their fairest the moment they release new hardware. The later you buy their hardware the bigger the difference with their competitors (They only lower the price of older hardware when releasing a new model and not that much either).

But superior hardware, no, that is a bridge too far. Decent hardware, yes, but not all hardware from Apple is equal.

tlammens··on Ask HN: What book changed your life in 2013?
Indeed, for me it was a page turner and inspiring.
tlammens··on [dead]
Plenty of letters in the alphabet, even more words! It's not the name that makes the product.
tlammens··on xkcd Time - at your own pace
Looks like some Semitic language.
tlammens··on Mathematics at Google
Correction, you added the source after my comment ;) But indeed, you didn't make that claim.
tlammens··on Mathematics at Google
I am trying really hard to ignore the Futurama picture. Really hard!
tlammens··on A remake of the very first website
If you look at the source, you shouldn't be surprised. It uses a very small subset of what is present now in html.

It also made me discover that view source was removed from Safari 6 (Without enabling the Developer menu) :(

tlammens··on Apple Conference Call
You are assuming that the profits they reported this quarter will be the same next quarters, why?
tlammens··on Writing and Speaking
Just trim the length of the ums and nobody notices them anymore. Fund a startup that can do um-filtering (speaking through a microphone) on the fly, problem solved. :)

You are in great company, just watched a couple of videos of Elon Musk and Donald Knuth. They are also expert um'ers but everyone keeps listening because the message they are broadcasting is interesting.

tlammens··on Writing and Speaking
The factor that makes ideas better (or in some cases worse) is thought, which comes with time. Speaking is very engaging at least for some people... (I notice this when I am in the car and talking to someone). It consumes a lot of attention, attention which can not be used to think about the problem. The same occurs when I have a discussion with someone. When I walk away after the discussion I get a lot of: "Oh, I forgot to say this, oh I forgot to say that", because you start direct your focus on thinking instead of talking. But I guess talking/thinking is not an "exclusive or" for some people.
tlammens··on Writing and Speaking
I like the format of a talk to spur my interest in a certain topic. (like the TED talks)

It would be nice when every talk would be accompanied by a text that deepens the subject, so I can read more about it.

Although a talk is nice, I am always left with a feeling that it barely scratched the surface of the topic.

As a side note: pg, you are a very good writer, you should write more books, please? :)

tlammens··on Driving has lost its cool for young Americans
In Europe (or at least in Belgium) driving on a manual transmission is default, automatic is rare. When you learn to drive with automatic and pass the exam, you are not even allowed to drive manual.

It is something you pick up after a couple of hours of driving and becomes second nature.

That said, I would prefer automatic, especially in traffic jams. Unfortunately it is not always an option when driving a company car.

tlammens··on The Dangerous Effects of Reading
"Side note: how freaking scary would it have been to explain to your great-great-grandfather that people would carry around computers and look at them while in the bathroom or driving - he would have been terrified of this future"

And terrified he should be, I am terrified thinking other people are not paying attention to the traffic.

tlammens··on Stanford Free Classes – A review from a Stanford Student
If I understood correctly, those were a predecessor of the current lectures. I had no problems with audio missing. (but yes quality could have been better)
tlammens··on Stanford Free Classes – A review from a Stanford Student
The online lectures you are talking about are the ones on youtube. They are not the same as the ones used in ml-class.org. The latter ones are in a completely different format.

It is not just a recording of a "normal" lecture...

tlammens··on Stanford Free Classes – A review from a Stanford Student
According to the website http://cs229a.stanford.edu/ there are class meetings, according to the blogpost everything is done solitary?

Another difference with the course offered to the public is that there is an open ended project.

If he really wanted a harder class, why not take CS229 and not CS229A...

If you want something to be harder, to get more out of something you should pursue it yourself, not depend on others.

I see (online) education as a guide, not as the only source of input. Selfstudy and initiative is the most important thing.

tlammens··on Elon Musk is pushing the human race forward
It is enabling an improvement in "total" efficiency which in the end is the only thing that matters.

The sum of the different parts being greater than the individual components...

tlammens··on Ask HN: Best book you read in 2011
Born to run by Christopher McDougall

Read it in the beginning of this year when I was starting to run, very inspiring. And look, I'm still running!

tlammens··on Thanks HN for the Christmas colors and Merry Christmas to you, too
It seems very weird that you need a high karma level for such a feature, no?
tlammens··on Thanks HN for the Christmas colors and Merry Christmas to you, too
Phew, my monitor is not broken. Happy holidays!
tlammens··on Build your own self-driving car
Not my project, but someone who followed Stanford's online machine learning class.
