I came here to kick ass, build web applications, and chew bubble gum. And I'm all out of gum.

tlhunter··on Sigma Says the Compact, Modular FP2 Is the Ultimate Hybrid Camera
Technically all the Sony cameras run on Android. Older models (e.g. the a7 II) allow you to install specially built "PlayMemories" Android apps.

Nowadays Android is mostly a hidden implementation detail, but I did recently see someone Claude+ADB some neat stuff for their Sony camera.

tlhunter··on Sigma Says the Compact, Modular FP2 Is the Ultimate Hybrid Camera
I combine the a7cII with various small primes (Sony 24mm f2.8, Sony 40mm f2.5, Sigma 90mm f2.8, Voigtlander 35mm f1.4) and I have a very capable camera that fits in a tiny bag. It's great for street and travel.

Then when I need to I can attach the same body to a big lens (Tamron 28-200, Sigma 100-400) and slap on a Smallrig grip to counteract the lens weight. It's great for protests and birding.

IMO the benefit is that one can purchase a single body and do big camera and small camera things with it.

tlhunter··on Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
Does anyone remember Sparrow?

I like the idea of a native Linux email client. The UI looks pretty good too. It's really not hard to beat thunderbird.

Calling it version 1.0 is bullshit though. It's only about a month old: https://github.com/c9dev/penguin-mail/graphs/contributors?al...

A project with the complexity of an email client cannot be considered stable in a month. There are bugs that will only show up after a year. It has a calendar after all.

tlhunter··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)
What does the company do?
tlhunter··on When did Google get so weird?
It seems silly for Google to throw away its competitive advantage and essentially turn itself into another conversational LLM. It's basically just a worse chatgpt at this point.
tlhunter··on Every Household in This Rural Town Receives $10k If a Data Center Gets Built
Sure, it's not much money to us, but it's probably a lot of money to most of the voting population.
tlhunter··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
In this case keys are per-sensor and revokable. So surely if someone spends a lot of money and extracts a sensor key it can only get minimal use before revocation?
tlhunter··on VC isn't VC anymore
Haha, all good.

I could have sworn that the second posting was automatically collapsed into the first.

tlhunter··on LibreOffice 26.8 is out – local first, and with no AI
Those screenshots are hideous. What's with the kerning in the headings?
tlhunter··on Ask HN: Just saw a YC25 job posting front page that looks like a 7-day work week
Nope
tlhunter··on Fixing a Bricked Framework Laptop
I have the same AMD 7040 Framework laptop and just had the keyboard fault explained in this thread where the "-", "0", and "P" keys stop working: https://community.frame.work/t/tracking-framework13-keyboard...

While it's nice to know that I can buy a $100 replacement keyboard (I'm about 6 months out of warranty) it's also frustrating that Framework wouldn't own up to what is obviously a manufacturing failure.

tlhunter··on Pixel Watch 5
I like how the footnotes are all broken. Like the repairability footnote links to charging. Lots of money was spent making that website.
tlhunter··on Proving a human wrote something
I had a similar idea for take-home tests for software interviews. Run a bash script to commit all changes in a repo every 5 seconds. The candidate then submits a tarball of the git repo.

  #!/usr/bin/env bash
  while true; do
    git add -A
if ! git diff --cached --quiet; then
      git commit -m "$(date --iso-8601=seconds)"
    fi
    sleep 5
  done
tlhunter··on My USB Drive Has a Hidden Encrypted Vault
I want something like this in a keyboard: a completely hidden drive that the OS cannot see until I type in a certain string of characters (password) to activate it with a separate string of characters to deactivate it.
tlhunter··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
I just want icons that I can click from my home screen (eg PWA).
tlhunter··on Web Browsers on PDAS
Title should read "Web Browsers on PDAs", in case you're confused like I was.
tlhunter··on Cheese Paper: a text editor specifically designed for writing
I'm a fan of Manuskript on Linux. It's similar but has more features and, IMO, looks better: https://www.theologeek.ch/manuskript/
tlhunter··on They Live (1988) inspired Adblocker
My personal tagline, "I came here to kick ass, build web applications, and chew bubble gum. And I'm all out of gum." came from this movie.
tlhunter··on Google Flow Music
I hate how these tools ask me to type in some long prompt and then once I finish they tell me that I need to make an account.
tlhunter··on The Utopia of the Family Computer
I actually found the LLM-generated image more annoying than the LLM-generated prose.

tlhunter··on “Your frustration is the product”
> No print publication on the planet does this. The print editions of the very same publications — The New York Times, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The New Yorker — don’t do anything like this.

Ehh... I cancelled my SF Chronicle subscription a year ago. Since then I've received a dozen predatory phone calls and just add many letters. Plus when you do have the subscription they alter prices on you like a cable TV provider. So in some ways print is better than web but in other ways it's worse.

Jack couldn't be bothered to use capital letters in his last layoff email either.
tlhunter··on Zed editor switching graphics lib from blade to wgpu
Hopefully this will get momentum scrolling working.
tlhunter··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
It's definitely neither sensible nor convenient. I expect it to trigger the scrollbar, not move the whole window. The only way one should be able to move the window is to drag the title bar. There's no reason clicking and dragging the 1px window border should ever move the whole window. Every Linux window manager, Windows, and IIRC Mac System <= 9 behaves this way.
tlhunter··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
What drives me nuts is if I slam my cursor against the right side of the window with the intent to click and drag the scroll bar of a maximized window up and down then the 1px wide window border gets selected and the whole window moves up and down. This has been a bug for several years.
tlhunter··on GitHub discusses giving maintainers control to disable PRs
About time. It's absolutely ridiculous that this hasn't existed for the past 10 years.
