tmoullet··on Ask HN: How many of the interns at your company are community college students?
0, but only because all of our interns are juniors and seniors (or grad students). In our area, CCs top out at the sophomore level. I would say the vast majority of our interns come from the local, 4 year state schools. We're generally not importing kids from "Top Schools". There's a good chance a good portion of our interns did indeed attend a CC at one time; that's a very common path to a 4 year degree here.

tmoullet··on Ask HN: How would you invest $500K?
In finance, there is a rule-of-thumb called the rule of 72. Basically, 72/X = # of years to double, where X is the compounded rate of return.

Solving for your request, 72/X = 5, X = 14.4%.

So to double your investment in 5 years, you need to find something that will give you 14.4% return for 5 years in a row. That high of rate (in this climate) would require a fairly risky investment.

tmoullet··on Ask HN: What percentage of your salary are you paying to health insurance?
I'm in the US and pay roughly 3.5% of my gross salary as my portion of the insurance premium. I opted for the cheaper HMO (Kaiser) insurance though. My employer pays the other 2/3rds of the premium. (I'm single, no kids)

tmoullet··on Show HN: AutoMicroFarm Is Ready for Shipping
Why did you decide on a two tiered system? I've seen aquaponic setups where the farmers are using a floating medium above the fish pool.
tmoullet··on Show HN: AutoMicroFarm Is Ready for Shipping
I just saw that this system went on sale recently too: https://farmbot.io/

It would be way cool to collab and create an AutoMicroFarmBot.

What features of the AMF are you planning for the next iteration/2.0?

tmoullet··on Ask HN: What do we get when applying root cause analysis to humanity's problems?
My vote is somewhere between "mortality" or "fear of our own mortality". I'd like to think the humans to transform into a form of asceticism if the bottom layers of Maslow's hierarchy were no longer a daily/hourly issue and we knew absolutely that we had long enough to achieve the top layers of the pyramid.

tmoullet··on Show HN: Pongderdome – Multiplayer Pong for 2-10 Players
Hey, this is pretty cool!

A few suggestions; feel free to take or leave them:

-The playing area zooming towards the ball was really distracting and made playing difficult

-Create a ball speed setting or easy/med/hard

-Add mouse control. The CL/CCL arrows can be counter intuitive

-Give each player a different colored/textured paddle. I lost track of mine a few times.

Other than that, well done!

tmoullet··on Illegal drugs: The wars don’t work
I thought the people who were killed by methanol poisoning was a deliberate side effect of the ATF adding it into liquor/beer supply in order to make consumers second guess their decision to drink.

EDIT: see denatured alcohol at any hardware store.

tmoullet··on Illegal drugs: The wars don’t work
Do you know of any studies/articles that explore this idea? In the UK does any of taxes collected on the sale/manufacturing of cigarettes go back to funding the NHS?
tmoullet··on Recycling in America
Just about every grocery store in Oregon has those machines. I guess it depends highly state to state. When I was working for a summer in New Mexico, I was somewhat appalled how the waitresses at restaurants would collect beer bottles from tables and toss them into the trash.

I agree. The proportions are really award and not intuitive to view.

tmoullet··on Ask HN: Best Supply Chain Management Books?
Finally an HN question that I can respond to!

I would recommend reading this book for a very good, but broad and high level intro:

http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Materials-Management-Tony...

This will cover topics like BOMs, MOQ, Safety Stock, Inventory strategy, warehousing etc.

Next I would recommend reading up on the following phrases: "product development" and "new product introduction" / "NPI"

http://www.amazon.com/Best-Practices-New-Product-Introductio...

http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Product-Development-Flow-Ge...

Lean training/reading never hurts either. Note: this is supply chain lean vs "lean start up".

tmoullet··on Show HN: PennyWhale – Use natural language to search for any financial data
Hey Jay,

This is really cool. One idea is it would be great if you could interface with EDGAR and gather the links to the various financial statements. The EDGAR database search/navigation is horrendous.

As another commenter said, it would be great if it could detect the company name or at least the ticker without the $.

Also, a failed query subtracts from the guest query allotment. That doesn't seem ideal as I'm first learning how to phrase my requests.

Lastly, mutual fund data would be awesome. Morning star rating, fund performance, fund assets, etc.

tmoullet··on Ask HN: What browser add-ons/extensions do you use?
The only one not mentioned so far that I use is DownThemAll.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downthemall/

It's nice for when you want to download a lot of files that appear on a page.
