tmp_anon_22··on Build Unix, Not Uber
> how little credit is given to GPS in Uber's story

Uber would not exist without GPS. I wonder how many other of the unicorns:

* Twitter without Rails

* Facebook without PHP (I think this is fair but maybe not)

* Reddit without Python

* Tesla and Solar City without huge government subsidies

Crazy to think how many Lake Tahoe vacation homes were transferred thanks to these projects.

tmp_anon_22··on Rumor: Google Stadia May Be Getting Shut Down
> It was utterly shocking that Google did not copy Nvidia's streaming games

They wanted the lock in. They did it for profit margin. Because people like the Director of Product the GP mentions hops from one role to the next its all short term nonsense.

tmp_anon_22··on Rumor: Google Stadia May Be Getting Shut Down
Until someone looks in that employee's wake and sees one dumpster fire after another and the employee being the common denominator. These people aren't just jumping from hype space to hype space, they are torching each of those projects to extract short term gains to the detriment of the teams under them.
tmp_anon_22··on House Democrats to propose ban on lawmaker stock trading – report
> The test for democracy is whether elected politicians pass legislation that the public at large wishes to be passed.

What happens if the majority of Americans want to pass laws against their best interest?

What happens if the majority of Americans want to pass laws that are deeply immoral?

tmp_anon_22··on Godot 4.0 development enters feature freeze ahead of the first beta
> isn’t fast enough for anything major.

I think it could be fast enough if portability to different platforms wasn't such a high priority for game studios these days. Nobody wants to write typescript and then pay $50M for someone to port it for Switch or whatever.

tmp_anon_22··on That time when I accidentally social engineered myself to a film set
"They didn't say no"

Is not by itself justification to do a thing.

tmp_anon_22··on Google delays phasing out ad cookies on Chrome until 2024
Assuming eternal altruism from a third party is absurd. This data is being soaked up, processed, transformed, stored, and at some level shared via a peering agreement.
tmp_anon_22··on Why is Meta's VR software so bad?
It would be different if they just wanted VR to be a success. But to replace Facebook's once-in-a-economy golden goose money ultra-printer with it? Thats so much to ask as to be comical.
tmp_anon_22··on Ask HN: I'm burnt out: frustrated, distracted, pessimistic. How do I fix this?
Instead of trying to game your entire psyche like other comments suggest, I recommend to founders to find a person you can actually speak truthfully to.

Drop the marketing talk. Stop talking about the peak potential of every little thing. Stop pretending that everything can or should be optimized. Stop pretending that every event is an emergency. Get your mind and body out of crisis mode. Admit to yourself that the failure of your venture is the most likely outcome, that it always has been the most likely outcome, and that thats ok and you can still learn and grow and make a difference even in failure. That you can do everything right and still lose.

The cognitive dissonance of tech has torn down so many people. Don't let it tear you down. There are conscious choices that you have made and continue to make that make you feel the way that you do. Your body is suggesting you change them.

Thousands of new managers. Think about that.

tmp_anon_22··on LiteFS a FUSE-based file system for replicating SQLite
> a highly leveraged crazy idea that will be a foundational part of a major technology shift

Has anything other then the Cloud presented a true foundational shift in how applications are built? Kubernetes, Serverless, Blockchain, React, Swift, these things are big but not big enough.

I think we just like pretending every little thing is the next big thing.

tmp_anon_22··on Airbnb will up its penalty for hosts who cancel last-minute from $100 to $1k
I just feel like there is an adequate "middle option" where you get a hotel room with a den and rely on the breakfast bar / hotel and local restaurants, to plug the gap while still paying the average hotel room price. I could see marginal cost savings cooking, but even the price of groceries (especially when not local-savvy) is quite high.
tmp_anon_22··on Airbnb will up its penalty for hosts who cancel last-minute from $100 to $1k
> Good luck booking a hotel suite (w/ kitchen, common room, etc)

This seems like a huge luxury that is not needed for most travelers. If you really need the kitchen and entertainment spaces then you're going to pay a lot even with Air BnB ("alot" being super subjective).

tmp_anon_22··on How to advertise to developers: deep dive into paid developer marketing
Most tech-adjacent subreddits (even sports subs) have tech products advertising for my user. Now a lot of this could be based off my activity as a user, I'm subbed to a few programmer subs that I could get targeted through.

That said all the ads tend to be from large vendors that seem to be targeting very senior engineering leadership. Not sure how great thats going for them.

tmp_anon_22··on Dutch schools must stop using Google's email and cloud due to privacy concerns
Only if allocating resources to in-house data centers does not take away resources from the product.

If you're Google sure throw a 100 people at a project that might get pivoted or axed. It won't matter. But a Government IT initiative? They have to be more efficient.

tmp_anon_22··on Dutch schools must stop using Google's email and cloud due to privacy concerns
That they tried to build their own data centers is a red flag. Not because its a bad idea, but I think you need to establish product-market fit for a software product before laying down serious hardware.
tmp_anon_22··on Hertz paid Accenture $32M for a website that never went live (2019)
> upper manager saw the cool tool promoted by someone and bought it

And closing that deal and having their reports implement the roll-out was milked for an entire quarters worth of performance metrics for that manager's brag-sheet.

tmp_anon_22··on Ask HN: Quit a job if you don't fit in the team?
At a previous job I was a developer attached to a non-technical business unit. They were an awesome group, none the less I felt like an outcast and it ultimately led to burnout.

Start interviewing elsewhere. Just seeing new opportunities is often enough to provide some relief and sense of perspective.

tmp_anon_22··on Show HN: Pg_jsonschema – A Postgres extension for JSON validation
I particularly appreciate the project structure of the linked repo. Its good to see actual production application code beyond a hello-world todo style app for languages like Rust and toolkits like Svelte. I look forward to going through the various pieces and learning them better by example.
tmp_anon_22··on Show HN: Pg_jsonschema – A Postgres extension for JSON validation
That project looks awesome, there are so many opportunities to take entrenched cloud products that leave a lot to be desired and turn them into smaller businesses that better serve the customers that AWS largely ignores due to their preference for volume.
tmp_anon_22··on Tell HN: You can't hire because you don't post salary ranges
Every interview screen I've had in the last few years has been an opportunity to discuss salary before getting into the more grueling technical stages of the pipeline.

Yes a screen call is annoying especially if you have a current work schedule but it really isn't that inefficient considering the phone screen is also the ideal medium to pick apart other aspects of the company and its constraints.

tmp_anon_22··on Blockchain.com cuts 25% workforce amid crypto bear market
> likely called Unbanked DAO of Courage represented by Mark Wahlberg

The celebrity endorsements of Crypto related investment platforms and product is so gross. Using themes like "you don't have to be smart to trade cypto" "be bold" its so gross.

I'm guessing the money they lost in this endeavor didn't materially impact them.

tmp_anon_22··on QA workers at Blizzard Albany are unionizing
Isn't it kind of weird that a Bezos owned media outlet is publishing an anti-union argument? "There's two sides to the story" falls apart when your siding with Corporate over Fast Food workers.

tmp_anon_22··on QA workers at Blizzard Albany are unionizing
I'm sure its a complex mix of 200+ years of socioeconomic development that goes well beyond my glib comment. I do really believe there is something to it though and understanding American culture (and politics).
tmp_anon_22··on QA workers at Blizzard Albany are unionizing
Americans love feeling like they're about to be rich (all 300+ million of us), thus unions are bad because they redistribute power to the poor.
