tmsldd··on Hubble Observes First Confirmed Interstellar Comet
I was questioning myself the same question, and imagined that would be a perfect application for a surveillance system with 3 satellite placed at L3, L4 and L5 Earth-Sun Lagrangian points and 3 placed 120° from each at a perpendicular orbit with respect to Earth orbital plane.

tmsldd··on Slow Reading: the antithesis of speed reading
I wonder whether Nietzsche wrote that because of his mother tongue... for me, switching between English and German is just like switching down 5 gears in a car...

I think of reading as a process of tuning between the mind of the writer and the reader.. like a dialogue, you can modulate the speed until you both feel comfortable with ..

tmsldd··on Hello, GitHub
@natfriedman, thanks to come public and sharing with us. To summarize in one word: transparency. That’s what GitHub community expects from the platform and you are the key person to drive it. Microsoft has been increasingly open to the whole open-source idea, which is great. But coming to the point, please, understand the following concerns: 1 - There is without doubt a conflict of interest and trust issues on Microsoft hosting thousands of private repositories, where some potentially compete with Microsoft commercial interests; 2 - There are concerns that the platform would become a exclusive marketing weapon in the hands of Microsoft, eventually killing the spirit of openness and free competition. 3 - The developer community fears that Microsoft see them as “potential clients” and therefore as target to its products. The developer community doesn’t want to be monetizing neither be bombarded with Microsoft products ads. 4 - GitHub has always been a community driven and community centered platform. What will be the role of Microsoft as it changes from “one more user” to the owner of the platform? 5 - What is now business model of GitHub and how entangled is it with Microsoft? More than ever, and more than anything else transparency will be the key for the success of GitHub. I wish you lucky on the new task.

tmsldd··on Understanding Hinton’s Capsule Networks, Part I: Intuition
I often see this metaphor as misleading somehow.. In both cases ( birds and airplanes) the physical phenomenon is exactly the same: lifting effect, which is related to the Venturi effect.. that is: the speed and the pressure of a fluid (in this case, air) depends on the geometry of the components affecting the flow of the fluid. Note that the wing geometry in airplanes is actually similar to the birds.. (of course, airplanes have it optimized by CFD for the speed and altitudes they flight) Although the “flapping” in birds’ wings also alters it’s geometry the main function is to act as the engines...

So, yeah, we need to discover the basic physical principle of the brain.

tmsldd··on Understanding Hinton’s Capsule Networks, Part I: Intuition
Hinton is with no doubt one of the greatest name in the field, but I think in this case particularly the paper fails to properly address citations. I have seen people publishing about dynamic routing and invariance problem by decades (e.g. C. Von der Malsburg, T. Poggio, and many others). But I admit, authors in general name concepts in such obscure and convoluted way, which makes it very hard to actually separate contributions and give credits to whom deserves it.
tmsldd··on “We have obtained fully functional JTAG for Intel CSME via USB DCI”
The landscape is of course complex... but I think that companies exposing their clients to such risk will only learn to protect their clients rights to privacy and to self-determination once organized groups of clients fight back on the court against this kind of practice. This is a question of human rights, not just a technical feature. Companies need to take legal responsibility over their decisions in any case where the security, freedom and free will of clients are at risk.

Don't get me wrong... but If it makes you feel better, I use DL for most of my research / projects. Well, after 7 years dealing with DL I couldn't really find a better single word to describe it.
tmsldd··on Transitioning entirely to neural machine translation
using google translation to German gives "meine Cousine und ihre Frau".. as you cited it might work just because English/German are close languages.. But, yeah, DL is just a fancy (and incomplete) mapping.

tmsldd··on Switzerland government raises investment funds to support Swiss startups
Hopefully it won't be different. All I want to say is: a startup here has to internationalize from the beginning, assume costs and expose itself to early competition. But if you see the funding history of Spotify [1], they got quite a lot of foreign funds. In the end, for the business side it doesn't really matter where the money comes from ;)

tmsldd··on Switzerland government raises investment funds to support Swiss startups
I understand your point. Yeah.. this is king of a ecosystem.. which needs to be balanced. The good news about the report is that it shows a mindset shift.. Switzerland is stable, warm (people) and radiates freedom .. for sure it is a good candidate to become the next hub.
tmsldd··on Switzerland government raises investment funds to support Swiss startups
Although it is nice to have more funds available, which increases the competition among VCs, the main point is not lack of funds. I used to say that a good VC brings you two important things: money and market. Money alone doesn't bring you much (don't get me wrong ..). In my eyes that is the main issue in the startup scenario in Switzerland: lack of market. Having a population of about 8 million people means that your startup has to focus in exporting products & services since the beginning... which adds some layer of complexity/bureaucracy ... Startups tend to establish themselves as close as possible to the client market to simplify as much as they can their initial operation..
tmsldd··on A large satellite appears to be falling apart in geostationary orbit
It looks like structural fault.. two possibilities here: a) debris collision and, b) hardware fault during maneuvering (e.g. Fuel tank explosion, solar panel or antena detachement). The later I think is more likely to happen towards the end of the life of the hardware.. which seems to be the case.. but in other hand we could expect a cloud of smaller debris floating around..
