> I'm trying to get her to stop.

...what? Why? Do you feel the videos she likes should be allowed to just vanish into the mists of time? To me that sounds like saying 'my sister takes pictures at her daughters' birthdays and I'm trying to get her to stop'.

Reminds me of that one episode where Mr. Spock figures out there's a problem with the computer because it loses at chess. And he knows it shouldn't lose at chess because he programmed it himself.

> if you want to render icons

...then you shouldn't be making a CLI app? I mean rendering and command line don't seem like they go well together.

tmtvl··on Anthropic trained Claude on illegally obtained Stanford professors' books
It's like fan fiction: sneaking into theatre to watch a movie without paying for admission is illegal, but writing fan fiction about the movie and publishing it on AO3 is legal.
tmtvl··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
The following is completely off topic, but I was mildly bemused how the article ends:

> Reflecting on the evolving nature of street scams, one commenter noted, "People are becoming hesitant to help strangers on the street for a reason. It's a dangerous world, making people colder."

> Reflecting on the evolving street scams, "People are becoming hesitant to help strangers on the street for a reason. It's a dangerous world, making people colder," one commenter lamented.

tmtvl··on I no longer care to work on any Ruby gems so I've archived all my repositories
Yeah, I never contributed to FOSS to get credit; I contributed because I wanted something improved which I thought was not very good and thought that sharing the improvements with the world would be good (sharing is caring, after all). From a Free Software perspective, I actually quite like that Generative AI allows people to create the software they want and adapt it to their wants and needs. Free Software is about freedom, after all (free as in free speech). Unfortunate GAI tends to be quite resource intensive, which is bad; but local models are getting better all the time, so hopefully eventually anyone can run a GAI model on their own computer and have it create any and all software they want.

It's a bit like Bob Ross' Joy of Painting: if everyone can paint then anyone can make any painting they want to see.

Are you talking of underage gambling facilitator Valve? I suppose 'pretend' is a good choice of words there.

tmtvl··on I tried to move my notes out of Emacs. I failed. Again
For modal editing there's also meow, god mode, and devil. Personally I quite dislike modal editing because of how you have to work very, very slowly and smash every key to make sure you don't accidentally do something like delete half the file, save, and quit; but I do have escape bound to god-local-mode for those rare times I need a long chain of chords. M-x some-command is usually good enough for me when I can't be bothered to memorise the chord, though.

When I read:

> What we've never seen is a unifying system that treated the TUI itself as the primary user experience.

I immediately thought 'this person has never heard of Emacs'. And my heart ached with pity.

tmtvl··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
No, it's not. C♯, with a sharp sign, is the sharp note. Exchanging the number sign for the sharp sign is like exchanging the Latin capital letter R for the Cyrillic capital letter Ya (Я).
tmtvl··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
Java. Fortran. C#, which in pronounced 'see sharp' despite being written with a number sign rather than a sharp. Algol.
tmtvl··on "Someone just sent me an ad that features an AI version of me. What do I do?"
Can't prove a negative. Proving 'it's an image of me' is as easy as holding the image next to your face. Proving 'it's not an image of you, but of a doppelganger' requires proof such a doppelganger exists.

tmtvl··on Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing
For me the draw is that Waterfox has partnerships in order to provide funding so if/when Mozilla truly loses the thread (which some may argue they have) WF can keep going on its own, whereas the Librewolf devs have stated that if push comes to shove they can't maintain an entire browser themselves.

And, of course, sell it to the Epstein class behind closed doors for undisclosed kickbacks and favouritism.

Match in 'percentage reduced since 1995'. Fortunately we're gonna get a bit of a chance to catch up considering the USA's current leadership.

No chance of that and I don't know where GP found that table but it most likely doesn't account for _any_ externalities.

Interestingly you're looking at the wrong column: emissions per million USD GDP have gone from 467 metric tons to 206 metric tons. That's an improvement of about 56%. It'd be great if the politicians here in the EU could pull their heads out of their arses long enough to try and match that.

tmtvl··on I'm a Proud Luddite. That's Why I Use Linux
FOSS is an interesting beast in that it's comprised of both Open Source (the Linux kernel) and Free Software (the GNU project). Linus is more pragmatic than Stallman so depending on where you personally fall in the idealistic vs pragmatic scale you may lean more towards either one of their philosophies.
