tomByrer··on Show HN: Turn Markdown into React/Svelte/Vue UI at runtime, zero build step
Suggestion: social card thingy so when it is linked to in Discord, X, etc, there will be a better looking link.
tomByrer··on Show HN: Turn Markdown into React/Svelte/Vue UI at runtime, zero build step
eh, you're cool, don't worry about the naysayers

While yea it is nice to directly deliver to HTML (I've done it many times), reality is most UI is in other framework languages. Plus I think a strong use-case is making output / browsing inside UI AI interfaces, which are also likely in a framework.

You provided enough for others who really care to add a direct-to-HTML plugin/fork if they so choose. Many of us want to use frameworks.

tomByrer··on Meta is spending $10B in rural Louisiana to build its largest data center
While I like solar & wind, when oil is drilled, natural gas is often burned off at the drill site. So if it is going to be burned, might as well make electrify from it.

"World Bank is urging energy firms to gather the gas and sell it to businesses and consumers.... Companies can use the gas in mobile electricity generating stations, to power their oil drilling sites, or as a fuel in petrochemical plants."

They didn't have to ask for special new breaks; the breaks were already passed:

tomByrer··on Meta is spending $10B in rural Louisiana to build its largest data center
I would guess the 20 year 'tax break' (AKA the other taxpayers are footing the bill) is the real reason for the building. shell game

Meta built a data center in North Kansas City. I'm not sure details of their break (Mayor loves to hand out money), but power is likely cheaper, & def much greener (1/3 from wind farms in Western Kansas state last I checked).

"take advantage of a new Louisiana incentive program, established by Act 730, that offers qualifying projects a state and local sales and use tax rebate on the purchase or lease of data center equipment"

tomByrer··on Edge Scripting: Build and run applications at the edge
Oh, there are lots of things you can do 'on edge' that can be easier/faster:

+ A/B testing + cookie warnings just for EU but not everyone else + proxy; helpful if you want to hide where your API is from or username/pass + route redirects + take off some workload from your server + mini applets (eg signup forms are great edge use-case)

tomByrer··on Edge Scripting: Build and run applications at the edge
Cloudflare had only 100 PoPs just a few years ago. Bunny has been around 10 years, but didn't get the cash injection from Google like Cloudflare did.

If you read the article, Bunny uses Deno, CF uses a cut down version of Chromeium (each instance is like a browser tab; isolated). Thus the API difference.

But I do agree, CF is building out more of a suite.

tomByrer··on Show HN: Crawl a modern website to a zip, serve the website from the zip
I think you can also screenshot full length in Chrome-based browsers; do both desktop & mobile widths.

It would be a good backup for the backup, & you designer will thank you.

tomByrer··on C2PA from the Attacker's Perspective
Thanks for helping to highlight how hard it is to track cloned/fake images.

BTW I guess 'watermarks' can be easily scrambled; add noise, filters, &/or recompress into another image format (eg JPEG -> AVIF).

tomByrer··on How quickly can you break a long string into lines?
I'm grateful that both x86 & ARM CPUs are perf-tested.
tomByrer··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
With web or other searching, every 'platform has a large audience'.

One of the worst censor/suppressor of free speech is also the largest web search.

tomByrer··on Leaving Substack
"Non profit" in USA are still very much profit-driven; only stipulations are:

+ must have a board + give away 30%+ of earnings (easily done by attaching a value to the OSS free installs & handling issues w/o billing)

tomByrer··on I love programming but I hate the programming industry
> you can then make it right and maybe even fast

IF there is budget for that very often. Otherwise they'll expect you to move on.

tomByrer··on Use web components for what they’re good at
From the creator of SolidJS (heavily inspired by Knockout.js by his own confession) & worked on eBay's Marko framework:

tomByrer··on Financing offshore wind
Unfortunately folks don't want wind farms disturbing their views, like the current US Global Warming Czar:

tomByrer··on Ask HN: Why Adobe still can’t figure out Flash on WASM?
Browsers have all the APIs you need to 'replace Flash' now, just needs the ecosystem IMHO.
tomByrer··on AI Seamless Texture Generator Built-In to Blender
Or actual photos of Clinton at a certain island that are real but called deep fakes?

I thought of a Scifi series years ago where puppeteers could force politicians say anything they wanted just by the threat of a deep fake.

tomByrer··on Apple is top funder of lobby group that says it represents small developers
Alt reason why "Apple continues to support old hardware": If some people found out that they NEED to get a new phone every 2 years that costs $1,000, then they might look to another cell phone manufacturer.

I'm sure the store is a factor though!

tomByrer··on Apple is top funder of lobby group that says it represents small developers
But like Windows having IE/Edge installed by default (& being sued for it), Google Play is the default store for Android, & 95% of public doesn't know otherwise.
tomByrer··on A plan to fix the internet: Put the government in charge
Some don't realize the fix is often worse than the problem.
tomByrer··on A plan to fix the internet: Put the government in charge
I live in Midwest now (KS). Yea, that was true 10 years ago, but even 4G is decent in rural areas now. & there are 2-3 dish providers in some areas.

+ my point is, most population don't have that limited choices.

tomByrer··on This Teen Was Prescribed 10 Psychiatric Drugs. She’s Not Alone
One of the easiest research papers I did in uni was for my Psychology 101 about using St Johns Wort for depression. It was describable in Germany ATT with decent success rate for mild-moderate depression.

I wonder why it doesn't get prescribed / officially recommended here in USA?

tomByrer··on Austrian ISPs Block Cloudflare IP addresses after apparent court order
> The owner of an IP address is responsible for the content delivered from that IP address

Nope, you are totally wrong; they are immune by US law.

AFAIK, CloudFlare removed only a handful of sites, but protected 100s - 1000s.

tomByrer··on Austrian ISPs Block Cloudflare IP addresses after apparent court order
Do any search for any US political content on Google. I (in Kansas City) get almost all Left-leaning to hard Left news sites as the first 10 results, while pre-Trump results I'd almost always get 2-3 lean/far-Right results in top 10.

tomByrer··on Reading fast, reading well, and reading widely (2020)
Yes, SEO advise for the past 7+ years is that 'Google likes those who are experts, so you have to have long essays to look like an expert & have longer time-on-page.'.
tomByrer··on Austrian ISPs Block Cloudflare IP addresses after apparent court order
Yep, DDG admists this (blog post from a few weeks back). When DDG first started, most of their results came from Yandex IIRC.

tomByrer··on One kitchen, hundreds of internet restaurants
Here in Kansas & I think MO people can sell things they cook at home. I know a caterer, baker & jelly canner who operate out of their home kitchens.
tomByrer··on Why Doesn’t America Build Things?
I had some co-workers quit because they did just fine without working (eg free housing). Some families are sticking with 1 income or 1.5 income earners after COVID19; they want to raise their own kids. Also, teens don't work at fast food joints & small companies like they used to to save up for collage or get their 1st car.

Unemployment rate only looks at those 'looking for work'. Those who 'drop out of the labor force' are hard to account for.
