tormeh··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
If you're a backend dev writing an API you should be writing automated tests. Clicking around in a GUI app is not the correct way to do things.

If you're exploring someone else's API there are lots of other clients you can use. Resonance seems pretty solid to me. Don't get what's the point of all the extra faff in Postman.

If you want to get real basic there's always ol' reliable curl.

tormeh··on Northflank Breached
40k is not a lot. Honestly that sounds like something that should have no consequences.
tormeh··on Northflank Breached
Dependa how you use it. If it's only for backups then it's fine.
tormeh··on France is getting download tax for content providers (€0.055/GB)
The easiest place to save is in entitlements. Saving there is unfortunately a really good way to avoid reelection. If you want to save money, get a better demography. That's impossible, but not more impossible than cutting benefits.
tormeh··on If IPv4 were land
The only real use-case for IPv6 is self-hosting, and that's just very niche. Other than that the arguments in favor of IPv6 turn to stuff like latency and network complexity. That's not nothing, but it won't make anyone change ISP, and so ISPs don't have to care about it.

From the ISP's POV a complex IPv4 network plus a simple IPv6 network is more work than just having a complex IPv4 network. IPv6 is optional, and IPv4 isn't.

The only way I can imagine IPv6 succeeding is if somehow big websites decide to slow things down for IPv4 users enough that they complain to their ISPs.

tormeh··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
I get a feeling that the best way we currently know how to use these tools is to not read their code at all. Models code and models review. Humans just ask questions and guide. Claude Code has no code editor on purpose.

Is this sustainable? I've got no idea.

tormeh··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
If there is a will there's a way. LibreOffice can have any feature ypu want if you're willing to pay for it. If you're not willing to pay then it wasn't that important to begin with.

Moving to LibreOffice cannot be a money-saving exercise if it's going to work. It has to be a political priority.

tormeh··on Meta Ignores Brazilian Court Order to End Bolsonaro Favoritism
Don't anthropomorphize the lawnmower. It's just a min-maxing hill-climbing machine.
tormeh··on Meta Ignores Brazilian Court Order to End Bolsonaro Favoritism
Or maybe the reason more bribes are paid to the current administration is that the current administration is more receptive to bribes? The ROI on gifts to Trump is probably higher than on gifts to Biden so it makes sense to give more.
tormeh··on The same AI request emits 8.5 times more CO2 in Texas than in Sweden
There's only so much hydro power to build out, and nuclear takes forever. Solar only works in summer that far north, and without insane batteries wind power just becomes greenwashed natgas.
tormeh··on Rust Style Guide
The new drone companies seem to favor Rust more. Helsing sponsors a lot of Rust conferences and stuff. Quantum Systems has job postings for embedded Rust. For companies that don't have a lot of legacy influencing their decisions, Rust is pretty much always going to be in their software stack. The big primes will probably come around to it in a decade or so.
tormeh··on Show HN: The Zelda timeline to catch up before the Ocarina of Time remake
I like "do, don't show" but I don't think that precludes a thin layer of gameplay over a story. Walking simulators are a prime example. The entire point of a walking simulator is the story, but the game doesn't progress without input from the player, unlike in a cutscene/movie. What Remains of Edith Finch is one of my favorite games, but the gameplay is pretty barebones.
tormeh··on US threatens Europe over Starlink restrictions
Unfortunately Trump is worse than Musk. And it's Trump who's to blame for the Ukraine speed restrictions.
tormeh··on "Tame" boar and deer are instinctively adapting to the wolf in the Netherlands
Population control, preventing overgrazing, stuff like that. However, the Netherlands (unlike most countries) is basically a big farm with practically no wild nature, so humans manage that stuff already. Maybe I'm exaggerating a tad, but I don't get what benefit wolves have in the Netherlands specifically.
tormeh··on JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases
Another interesting niche is in between JPEG and RAW. RAW files are a pain to deal with, but editing JPEGs can be problematic due to bit depth and whatnot. Personally I just want to shoot pictures and not edit/convert/whatever, but sometimes I have a shot that could benefit from a bit of adjustment, and that's where even large JPEGs have an issue. Bit depth and whatever isn't suitable.
tormeh··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
The issue for me is that RAW sucks, and Jpeg also sucks. Jpegs are standardized and display anywhere, but are also super lossy. RAW, like fish, is not actually a thing beyond a sorta "I know it when I see it" deal. It's non-standard even between camera models from the same manufacturer, and there are like 10 pieces of software that bother with this bullshit and afaik none of them are OSes or browsers.
tormeh··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
On an ecommerce site? Who cares. On instagram or anywhere people share photos? Amazing.
tormeh··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Nothing. Europeans can be divided into two groups. Skilled people working nice jobs. These people already have enough and are satisied with their lot. Then you have the people that are struggling. These are generally not the kind of voter that would support effective government policies and instead mostly gravitate towards pro-welfare and anti-immigration parties.

Something that distinguishes Europeans from Americans is the general level of economic security here. This is generally good for the mental and physical health of everyone involved, but it does mean that there's no hustling or grindset among the educated classes here.

tormeh··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Why suffer worse bureaucracy than you absolutely have to? As long as there are no trade barriers companies will go where circumstances are the most favorable. What's the argument in favor of settling in Europe?
tormeh··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Yes, I agree, but first you need to get planning and connection permission for those battery storage locations. I wouldn't hold my breath.
tormeh··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
In absolutely no way is that true. The EU price varies by renewables production. When it's dark and still that's when electricity costs the most, and that's when Germany imports energy. It exports when there's sun and wind, but then the energy is cheap. So Germany sells low and buys high. Doesn't matter if Germany is a net exporter because it exports at the wrong time.
tormeh··on Fastpotify
It's a music player, and it's way too heavy for what it does. Well, it does a lot it doesn't need to, too. Uses 1.5GB of RAM on my laptop atm. Since I only have 16GB on my work laptop that's noticeable. I'd love it if Spotify AB could replace its client with a native Rust one, although using an immediate-mode GUI library like fastpotify does might not be the best option...

Is there any music streaming service with fast native cross-platform (Linux, Mac, Windows, Android) clients? Because I'd switch. Feel like Spotify's recommendations have taken a nosedive lately, so that wouldn't hold me back too much.

tormeh··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
Seems like a good time to recommend Apache Datafusion. It's designed to be a library, but works pretty well standalone as well. There's a CLI version, but also Python and Java bindings, as well as a Rust library, of course.

From my own experience I can say it integrates far better into your Rust app than DuckDB does.

Well over 100 monthly contributors, too.

tormeh··on Pixel Watch 5
This practically means you can't ship any runtimes, standard libraries, nor any big libraries with your app. Your app has to be just the business code and all the extras has to be stuff already on the watch. Crucially, size requirements like this doesn't mean you can't write slow python apps or whatever, so long as the watch ships with a python interpreter.

I suspect 10MB might be more friendly in the current day and age.

tormeh··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
An OS has massive network effects. You get Windows because you want to run software compiled for Windows. The OS itself is a necessary inconvenience.
tormeh··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
I think all tertiary software job markets are like this. Full of bosses and coders who don't even know how bad their practices are.
tormeh··on Gpiozero Flow
I think PLCs are programmed using a mix of text and visuals. Or at least that's what I remember from uni. I'm not entirely sure why that is. I suppose it makes it a lot more obvious to your coworkers and management when you make spaghetti code, which I suppose can create pressure to not make a total mess of things.
tormeh··on Flux 3
I can totally see that. I imagine it's great for hiking and food. But if/when this company has an issue you'll have to move again or start working at the local Sparkasse or something.
tormeh··on Flux 3
These people are hiring in... Freiburg im Breisgau? Wonder how hiring is working out for them there.
tormeh··on Which streaming service was that on again?
Usually Justwatch should be able to tell you where something is available. However I will note that it's remarkably common for something slightly old to just not be available anywhere. You cannot watch Das Boot in my region on any service so far as I can see. So I guess you loan from the library or buy DVDs off of ebay or something?
