torus··on Paris preserves its mixed society by pouring billions into public housing
There's even a name for this specific case of disappointment:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome

"the disorder is caused by positive representations of the city in popular culture, which leads to immense disappointment as the reality of experiencing the city is very different from expectations: tourists are confronted with an overcrowded and littered city ... and a less than welcoming attitude by French hospitality workers like shopkeepers, restaurant and hotel personnel without considering the higher safety risks to which tourists used to safer cities are suddenly exposed."

torus··on Exa, a modern replacement for ls
Nice, I like the -T option.

torus··on Facebook is the new Excel
> People are increasingly using Pages, Groups and Albums for all kinds of things that would previously have justified a whole startup

This is a snarky comment, but if a company can be replaced by a facebook page then it isn't adding much value.

torus··on Once you go functional, you can never go back
While Haskell is undoubtedly better suited to writing concise implementations of sorting algorithms, the C++ versions given could have been written in a much shorter and clearer fashion.
torus··on U.S. Legalization of Marijuana Has Hit Mexican Cartels’ Cross-Border Trade
> Americans spend about $100 billion on illegal drugs every year

So that's $350 per capita on average. That's a lot higher that I expected.

torus··on The Most Influential Books Ever Written (2010)
I was fascinated by what I'd heard about him and wanted to understand his philosophy. I don't think I realised he'd deliberately made it obscure!

"Beelzebub's tales to his grandson" is probably the only book I've found that I really, really, couldn't read. I'd love to know what it means though.

torus··on The Antivirus Era Is Over
This is a better approach, but as you say it does put the configuration overhead on the user - and many users will just click "yes" when asked whether to allow something.

So user eduction is important, but hard to ensure across a whole organisation for example.

torus··on Unit Testing: Is There Really Any Debate Any Longer?
I agree with what you said about "end user" code actually. I guess I am really arguing in favour of testing, not specifically unit-testing.
torus··on Unit Testing: Is There Really Any Debate Any Longer?
One way to look at it is that optimising for testing is optimising for correctness
torus··on So I Made A Mashup, And Then…
Years ago, Acid (I forget who made it) used to have great features for beatmatching tracks and pitch shifting. It wasn't the best DAW by any means but it seemed to have been designed for making mashups.
torus··on Disks lie. And the controllers that run them are partners in crime.
> The 'driver' for flash attached as memory is var = ((var type )(0xsome64bitaddress);

It's a nice idea, but the driver for flash needs to do much more than this. For example, blocks need to be erased before they can be re-written, and since they have a limited lifecycle blocks must also be copied around and remapped.

torus··on Is the Batman stock market heist possible?
Bane coerces a trader ... to bet all of Wayne Enterprises’ stock on bad futures

Couldn't he just short the future himself?
