totallywrong··on How NAT Traversal Works (2020)
It's no different from traditional VPNs. The tailnet admin has control over the routes that are exposed to clients and ACLs are available to further limit access. It's an overlay network, it doesn't magically give you access to user space on people's laptops.
totallywrong··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
It does. And you can also use the phone screen as trackpad while in Dex mode. It's actually a pretty good desktop environment for Android.
totallywrong··on My second year without a job
Wow aren't you projecting big time here? People have different goals and priorities, such as enjoying life while young.
totallywrong··on My second year without a job
> Nobody I know is leaving a $70k a year job to take a sabbatical.

I took my first sabbatical at 25, with only a few years in the industry, making a lot less and I think $35k in the bank. Everyone told me I was crazy putting a gap in my CV, spending savings, etc. but I did anyway.

It was easily the best two years of my life, I travelled South America and Asia without a care in the world until the money was gone. Then I went back to work without an issue and have continued taking long periods off throughout my career. These days I'm a remote contractor, and even though I can and do work from anywhere I regularly still take months off at a time. I have a lot of savings too and a fully paid house in a country I love.

My point is that we create the anxiety for ourselves. A different lifestyle is possible if you make certain choices.

totallywrong··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Something relatively easy you can try is to get your body into ketosis, where mental clarity and energy levels are greatly improved. While I don't think it's good for most people (it's a pretty antisocial diet) I'd jump right in in your situation.
totallywrong··on Europe is in danger of regulating its tech market out of existence
Well done EU and good riddance to any company that doesn't like these laws.
totallywrong··on $1T Rout Hits Nasdaq 100 over AI Jitters in Worst Day Since 2022
CUDA with all its developer mindshare.
totallywrong··on $1T Rout Hits Nasdaq 100 over AI Jitters in Worst Day Since 2022
It really was a matter of when. What real progress have we seen since people first experienced ChatGPT and the hype started? Investors have been very dumb throwing money on anything AI and they're starting to realize it.
totallywrong··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
Solid advice, I'm doing that, building the thing at the moment. Any thoughts on marketing and getting those first few clients?
totallywrong··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
This would be pretty normal in Europe, my dad went through the same and his job was never a concern. And treatment was fully covered by the public health system. Salaries reflect that of course, can't have it all.
totallywrong··on Ask HN: Is it possible to make FAANG salaries without working there?
There's also the option of making 120k or so working remotely while living in a LCOL country. You end up with about the same purchasing power.
totallywrong··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
Maybe it used to be, probably because the Castro and Guevara rebellion is a great story. But today I feel that everyone knows that it backfired and the country is in shambles due to terrible totalitarian leaders.
totallywrong··on FCC votes to limit prison telecom charges
The comments in this thread are terrifying, hard to believe this is happening in the US in 2024.
totallywrong··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
As an infra guy, it seems like all my biggest fights at work lately have been about quality. Long abandoned dependencies that never get updated, little to no testing, constant push to take things to prod before they're ready. Not to mention all the security issues that get shrugged off in the name of convenience.

I find both management and devs are to blame. For some reason the amazingly knowledgeable developers I read on here daily are never to be found at work.

totallywrong··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Well said. I can't fathom companies being fine with some 3rd party pushing arbitrary changes to their critical production systems.
totallywrong··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
Canonical in particular are no better, they do the exact same thing with that aberration called snap. They have brought entire clusters down before with automatic updates.
totallywrong··on Multiple airlines disrupted due to Microsoft Azure outage
How is this update released at all? Something that affects literally every machine does not get caught in testing? From a 80B company no less.
totallywrong··on Multiple airlines disrupted due to Microsoft Azure outage
Interesting that I happened to transit 3 different Asian airports today and had zero issues. I haven't seen anything at all related to the outage over here.
totallywrong··on Multiple airlines disrupted due to Microsoft Azure outage
Yeah, you're completely out of touch of the industry. As horrendous as it is Windows on Azure (and the entire ecosystem it comes with) is an easy sell for the dinosaur IT leaders that haven't seen a Linux server in their life. You'd be surprised how common that is.
totallywrong··on Multiple airlines disrupted due to Microsoft Azure outage
Antivirus company causing exponentially more harm in hours than it's prevented during its entire existence.
totallywrong··on Multiple airlines disrupted due to Microsoft Azure outage
I wish. Only (mostly small) tech savvy companies might maybe make that move at some point. Herd mentality and short term convenience have already won that battle. AI will only add to that since for 99.9% of people LLMs and cloud are synonyms.
totallywrong··on Kanban vs. Scrum: What's the difference?
The difference is that Kanban won't require a million useless meetings and will actually help you plan and get stuff done.
totallywrong··on Show HN: I am building an open-source Confluence and Notion alternative
Not OP but thanks for sharing, excellent comment.
totallywrong··on Winpopup (2001)
s/chat/cheat in my school.
totallywrong··on Microsoft removes documentation for switching to a local account in Windows 11
Quite simply, Fedora is by far the distribution with more paid developers, and that certainly shows.
totallywrong··on Microsoft removes documentation for switching to a local account in Windows 11
There is GPU passthrough these days, where you can have a Windows VM with dedicated graphics and native performance running under Linux. No dual boot required. It does take a bit of work to get it right but I consider my current setup near perfect.
totallywrong··on Microsoft removes documentation for switching to a local account in Windows 11
This is outdated, with the exception of perhaps webcams I've had hardly any issues with hardware on Linux in years, and that includes a couple of Intel MBPs. Just got a latest model laptop with a RTX 4080 and everything worked out of the box. I had to install Windows recently for someone and I had way more issues there.
totallywrong··on Effectiveness of an walking intervention for the prevention of low back pain
Squats and deadlifts are considered the best of all excercises, and will give you a strong, healthy back. Focus in form, not weight, and if you have existing issues find a variation that works for your body (trap bar, Smith machine, different grips and feet placements).
totallywrong··on The Hacker News Top books of 2023
I somewhat agree in principle, but that hasn't aged well.
totallywrong··on Young men face high risk for gambling addiction as sports betting surges:experts
It's ridiculous these days watching any sports content, the amount of betting related ads is outrageous. I see no other outcome than droves of new gambling addicts.
