toymachine··on FB’s Policy on Enforcing Against Manipulated Media
>>Collaboration is key. Across the world, we’ve been driving conversations with more than 50 global experts with technical, policy, media, legal, civic and academic backgrounds to inform our policy development and improve the science of detecting manipulated media.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, of course collaboration is important. On the other Fb has near unlimited resources yet feels like they can shift the burden to other entities who in no way benefit from the problems their hugely profitable business creates.

toymachine··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Been geeking out about ZIP code data at https://incomedata.org . I never realized how cool ZIP code data is, just how important the census is, or how much fun working with geo data is.
toymachine··on Route Leak Impacting Cloudflare
Same FIOS issues for me. Any idea how this is all related?
toymachine··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
I realized I was always looking for the best pen and I was geeking out about writing instruments so I started a website about pens: https://unsharpen.com/. There is some light programming, but it's mostly data entry.
toymachine··on Basecamp Built a $100B Business by Doing Less on Purpose
$100b, amazing.
toymachine··on Elon Musk Settles SEC Fraud Charges
Honest question: Does it really matter if he loses the chairman role? Or even if he lost the CEO role? If he was busted down to VP of Engineering he would still be a major shareholder and everyone would did what he said right? He just wouldn't have any "official" corporate leader responsibilities (quarterly calls, etc). Or am I totally wrong?
toymachine··on Ask HN: Do you really need a $1000 phone?
>>wool underwear

Ha, what? Now I'm intrigued. What kind??

toymachine··on Secret green shelters that feed London’s cabbies

toymachine··on MAYKE – Build a side-project this May
Who is this by/for? It says "We’re a community of people trying to build our side projects over the month of May." but there is no talk about who we is. I'm not suspicious or anything, just curious!
toymachine··on Sourdough Starters, Recipes, and Baker's Handbook
Wait, is this the second sourdough link to this the front page in two days? Am I missing some important bread-tech connection?
toymachine··on Surveillance Database of Journalists to Be Compiled in US. Where Is the Outcry?
Reasonable thing to point out but the article doesn't offer any solutions or cogent ideas. It just seems like a bunch of quotes and links slapped together.
toymachine··on Ask HN: We launched 2wks ago and just hit $700 MRR. Should we chase funding?
Sounds like you are off to an incredible start, so why not just run with it and see how far you go? Without VC pressure to get HUGE super quickly you could have a great business on your hands. So if you simply need funding for cash flow or to support yourselves, then try friends and family. You might be surprised how much people are ready to take a chance on your idea.

If you have some degree of product-market fit, then an accelerator likely won't be a great use of time.

toymachine··on Ask HN: What are the best podcast episodes you've listened to?
Invest Like the Best, Albert Wenger (ep 32, 3/13/18)
toymachine··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2017?
Been working on a series of small sites helping people with very specific purchase decisions. Example: https://coffee-scale.com/ which helps people find the best coffee and espresso scales for their specific needs.
toymachine··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Wow, that's awesome. How are you promoting/marketing it? How do people find out about it? And how are you getting reviews?

Have been thinking about this for awhile and haven't settled on the right topic yet!
