tqi··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
There's value in allegory. I don't think there's value in modern mainstream television or film.
tqi··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
I'm not saying that it is isolated, I'm saying that it has too much influence.
tqi··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Yes, mostly?

My feeling is that while enjoyable and thought provoking, TNG is still a work of fiction, and as such favored entertainment and legibility within a 45 minute window over nuance or subtly. That meant there were clear distinctions between "good" and "bad" sides, and scenarios often felt like they were constructed backwards from an outcome/clever solution.

I think that in turn causes people to view the real world in the same way, except they are always the "good" side and solutions that require compromise and tradeoffs are seen as unacceptable failures.

I think looking to popular entertainment for thought leadership is silly.
tqi··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
I think they're trying to build a moat through regulation, I think that's different from laying groundwork for a bailout. They clearly don't think they are going to fail.

What does "act responsibly" mean in this context?

tqi··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
No bailout is fine but I think the gross thing about this is it's clear they also hope these companies fail.
tqi··on Somebody please stop the spam texts
Not an excuse, but keep in mind that this is an absolute minefield for any company. If there is even a hint that the filtering is disproportionately one party, the media will run wild with it. There is nothing more that journalists love to write about than a "conspiracy" to influence elections, real or imagined.
tqi··on Can we replace a $150k Looker with a bucket of HTML files?
lol aren't dbt charts are like a month old? I assume this all happened before all that was open sourced
tqi··on Show HN: SimCity, but with Permits
but again, do you think those affected residents of the predominantly Black and low income communities would have gotten very far in civil court?
tqi··on SimCity, but with Permits
but do you think restrictive zoning and onerous permitting requirements would have prevented that? It's not like laws against murder prevented lynchings, I think in most cases these rules would have just been ignored by municipalities because they largely exist to protect monied interests not vulnerable populations.

tqi··on Apple HomeView
That's the joke...
tqi··on Apple HomeView
FWIW the tech specs don't mention an ipx rating, so not sure how well this would handle dirty and wet hands either.
tqi··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
"Meetings in the room frequently involved confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information, including proprietary research, product plans, and government engagements, according to the complaint."

LOL imagine going to jail for trying to eavesdrop on product roadmap readouts that were likely thrown out 2 months later in the next round of reorgs and priority shifts.

tqi··on Apple HomeView
Funny, I had the opposite reaction to the ad. The whole sequence felt forced, and if these are the best use cases they could come up with (looking up recipes, using findmy, asking for factoids, checking calendars) theres very little reason why someone would opt for this vs just using their phone.

$300 is a compelling price, but I have a hard time imaging this being successful.

tqi··on Apple HomeView
None of these use cases are better on a device with a fixed location.
tqi··on A Remote Employee Refused 160 Webcam Photos a Day. Her Employer Fired Her
Most companies allow you to access email, slack, etc on non work issued devices, such as phones.
tqi··on Using AI for just 10 minutes erodes your ability to persist at hard things
This headline doesn't pass the sniff test at all...
tqi··on US man given prison sentence for bot-farming music streams
Feels like this is missing the bigger story, that this guy was using ai (AI!) to generate music in 2017-2024! /s

If you believe ubiquitous cameras (dunno why that was censored) is creating a surveillance state then what does it being de-centralized accomplish here?
tqi··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
First and foremost journalism is the business of turning news into attention (and ad revenue), not informing the public.
tqi··on Your body of work thinks back at you
"The camera doesn’t create the consistent thread. It doesn’t decide to take an interest in hostile architecture, for example. It is your curiosity that does and that lets in details into your archived where they live unnoticed until one day you get struck by a realisation."

Or maybe this is just apophenia, with a sprinkle of confirmation bias.

tqi··on Anthropic CEO says AI swarm could 'take over the Internet' in 6-12 months
"potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage"

The global economy is over $126T this year (ecommerce alone is like $7T) how can something as scary sounding as AI swarm taking over the internet cause so little damage?

tqi··on Waymo pulls over, calls cops on juvenile riders who had 'ghost gun"
> What if they were just holding toy guns, innocently going from one kid's house to another? What if Waymo thought the guns were real, called the cops, and the cops screwed up and shot one of the kids?

I'm always confused by how lines are drawn in scenarios like this. if calling cops makes waymo culpable, why not also blame parents buying kids guns? Toy stores selling the guns? Where does the chain of events start?

tqi··on San Francisco institution 'heartbroken and furious' after erasure of public art
> “We’ve tried to approach what happened assuming there was no ill intent,” Torres of CAMP wrote in the Thursday letter. “Still, after nearly 35 years of stewarding this alley, we have to ask: How does the erasure of four longstanding community murals happen without any communication with CAMP or the artists involved?”

Feels like the most plausible explanation of what happened is the property owners got a blight citation[1] for graffiti on some other part of the building, and either misunderstood or miscommunicated to their employee what was supposed to be removed. I don't know why everyone is jumping to either "the owners are assholes" or "the owners get to do what they want it's their property."

tqi··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
"If you drive your own vehicle, it goes where you want it to go"

I think privacy conscious folks like yourself consistently overrate how much purchase this argument has. I am perfectly happy to forgo this in exchange for a sufficient increase in convenience / safety (for myself and others). This is not because I have been brainwashed by autonomous vehicle company propaganda, it is because I have different values and concerns.

tqi··on Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?
I think eventually, some form of self updating llm memory will replace skills, but in the meantime it is token inefficient for the model to have to parse the entire repo from scratch every time, and skills are an imperfect way to shortcut some of that (drawbacks being the skills are sometimes wrong or outdated)
