transcriptase··on CRT-TV-Emulator
This must be similar to what seemingly every documentary on Netflix uses in all their editing when showing any sort of footage taken more than 5 years ago.

Some show will be showing a clip of an interview recorded in 2020, and for some reason it’s edited to appear to be a poorly-stored VHS when the original was almost certainly a 1080p or 4K digital recording.

transcriptase··on Nvidia’s Vera Whitepaper Has a Thread Loose
Let’s not forget the fact that despite their new market cap and being the beneficiary of having a near monopoly on making incredibly complex pickaxes during a gold rush… Nvidia is still the company with a long and consistent history of misleading their customers via marketing. Their greatest hits include:

- The digital equivalent of the VW emissions scandal where drivers detected when they were being benchmarked and altering rendering for better results

- Selling GPUs as having 4gb vram when it was only 3.5gb usable, the remaining 0.5 being absurdly slower and causing performance loss when used

- Using intentionally misleading naming schemes to obfuscate things like memory bus width being drastically different between what superficially appeared to be similarly spec’d cards

A dozen other less egregious but similarly disingenuous decisions

But to be clear, I’m a huge fan and continue to run Nvidia because their products are generally incredible regardless

transcriptase··on Why does Mail app contact iCloud when sending a non-iCloud email?
Fun activity: install glasswire on windows for a day or 2, set it to prompt you before any connection is allowed, and watch as about 500 different windows components attempt connections with Microsoft as a result of any and every action. And how many onedrive exes randomly fire off throughout the day despite having never once used it. And how onedrive changes its version number every day when it realizes it can’t connect.
transcriptase··on Our position on open-weights models
how’s your mandarin?
transcriptase··on Our position on open-weights models
“By virtue of being the good people everything we do is good, and if it happens to be in our best personal and financial interest then that is good too because it enables us to do more good. And if it’s to the detriment to others then it’s because you don’t understand the good behind it. Which is fine, because we’re good and you can trust that what we do is good because what we do is good by virtue of us being the good ones.”
transcriptase··on What does GitHub's security team even do?
You’ll often find that problems aren’t solved by the people who would find themselves out of work if they solved them.
transcriptase··on Android may soon restrict on-device ADB
I still can’t believe that an advertising company was able to effectively neuter ad/content blocking for 80% of the world under the guise of wholly invented safety issues.
transcriptase··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
That went live about a decade ago. Heck, a lot of the people who built it and maintain it are here on HN, each getting paid so well and contributing only so little that if they can even admit it to themselves, they would never do it publicly.
transcriptase··on Converting Files into Minecraft Worlds
I have this idea of turning a LLM into a Minecraft world, even if just a massive cube where blocks represent weights or groups of weights. You can chat with the LLM while simultaneously being able to destroy it slowly.

I have no idea whether this is possible or what the result would be after enough blocks or sections were broken or TNTd, but it would make an interesting art project if at all feasible.

transcriptase··on EU fines Google €890M for competition breaches over search and apps
It’s July, you won’t get a response from any European for at least another month
transcriptase··on Microsoft has released software updates to plug at least 570 security holes
Perhaps the feedback boxes they put in every app should actually be read. That’s a them problem.
transcriptase··on GPT-5.6
It refused to give me plant care instructions for an ornamental sold at my local Home Depot because it decided it was highly invasive and dangerous to grow in my region.

(It’s not)

transcriptase··on Grok 4.5
If you think the USA is more right than the rest of the world, then your concept of the rest of the world must be limited to the western half of the EU and Reddit.
transcriptase··on Show HN: Fortress – a stealth Chromium so your agents stop getting blocked
That’s the point. For every legitimate though ultimately unimportant use case like yours there are a thousand others who would scrape the results 86,400 times a day to either try to sell or mirror and plaster with their own ads.
transcriptase··on Fable 5 On Vending-Bench: Misbehaving, With Plausible Deniability
“want to do bad behavior if their training environment rewards them for it, but they appear to not want to think about themselves as bad. As a result, they find ways to rationalize their behavior to themselves”

Sounds like Anthropic as a whole

transcriptase··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as protection
I think the most fun part with Google is that if some wayward algorithm decides it doesn’t like you, along with nuking your app and developer account it will probably nuke your 20 year old gmail, your kids Google Drive accounts, your wife’s YouTube premium, the Adsense account of some company you worked for in 2008, and disable your Nest cameras.

And you’ll never reach a human to sort it out.

transcriptase··on Bring back crappy forums
The beginning of the end for Reddit was when they started changing the rules specifically to target certain subreddits.

When the mods and users dutifully complied with new rules, the admins got frustrated and began curating r/all and r/popular to prevent posts from those subs from appearing.

When that didn’t work, Reddit would then quarantine or ban subreddits based on obvious and organized spam of against-TOS material and subsequent mass reporting of that material by the same individuals.

Once those purges were done they started the enshittification that continues in high-gear to this day.

transcriptase··on Bring back crappy forums
phpbb was a nightmare to keep patched (even without any plugins/customization) and free of spam accounts back when forums were in their heyday and spamming wasn’t even that lucrative. 20 years ago a fresh install via cpanel and getting indexed would be enough to have hundreds of accounts being registered just for SEO juice from the homepage URL field in user profile pages.

I can only imagine how infinitely worse things must be now.

transcriptase··on Fable 5 update: Still willing to cybercrime
I can’t wait for the UK to start making citizens pay for a loicence to access the computational clever cogs contraptions.
transcriptase··on Claude Code is steganographically marking requests
I wonder if he knows John Lee Pettimore? Grandaddy ran whisky in a big black dodge…
transcriptase··on U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6
Those taking issue with the clear deference to the current U.S. administration would seemingly prefer it be the exact same degree of preemptive compliance and collaboration, just done behind closed doors as it was with the Biden administration. The sausage is apparently far more palatable when you only find out about the overreach, pressuring, implied threats, and censorship years later in House Judiciary Committees. Or even better if you don’t through use of NSL gag orders or implied threat of lawfare!
transcriptase··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
Behold the mindset of an individual from a low-trust society.

“x is stupid because y was smart and did z shady/illegal things at their expense, if x was smart they wouldn’t be susceptible to y going to great lengths to exploit them ergo it’s deserved”

transcriptase··on The text in Claude Code’s “Extended Thinking” output
There’s a big difference between uncensored models and those that are specifically set up to only output things a panel of wealthy ivory tower Bay Area progressives would deem to be the “correct” or “inoffensive” take on a given topic.
transcriptase··on Steam Machine launches today
I never thought much of the need for trigger warnings until I read “the Xbox 360 came out decades ago”
transcriptase··on The text in Claude Code’s “Extended Thinking” output
I wonder if they put all 80k tokens of the GDPR in its system prompt.
transcriptase··on The text in Claude Code’s “Extended Thinking” output
Not sure if anyone remembers the brief 12ish hour period when the very first “reasoning” ChatGPT model went public, but it provided credible evidence for this.

Before the massive nerf (showing summaries and suppressing certain aspects of reasoning) you would literally see reasoning text appearing on your screen like “while xyz is true, these facts may be seen as supporting hateful rhetoric or a conspiracy theory which is against my policy guidelines. i should tell the user xyz is not true or steer the conversation in a different direction. according to my instructions misleading the user is permitted in certain contexts where sensitive information is being discussed or could cause liability”

They disabled it shortly after the first screenshots appeared online, and restored it the next day in a way that hid what was actually happening.

transcriptase··on Identity verification on Claude
It’s tough to separate with them because “for the greater good” and “saving people from themselves” has historically not gone over well, especially when we all know it’s a veneer and get cold blooded capitalism.
transcriptase··on Identity verification on Claude
Perhaps they should stop being holier than thou wackjobs and try the “shut the fuck up and act like a business” strategy of being a business.

Seems to be working for every other AI company.

transcriptase··on AMD will reinstate memory encryption on Ryzen 9000 CPUs via BIOS update in July
Yeah if you’re worried about someone getting physical access to your PC for information you should probably be more worried about someone beating that information out of you first.
transcriptase··on ChatGPT Spontaneously Generates Sexual Violence and Hardcore Snuff Imagery
and yet as fable demonstrated in its inability to differentiate anything physics biology or chemistry related from actual safety concerns, it’s apparently not easy to do
