treetalker··on Bastard
I get the argument, and I agree with much of it. But the author loses points with me by using the term bastard, and derogatorily at that.

Implying that a child born out of wedlock is of less value than one born in wedlock is silly. It reduces to judging someone for something wholly out of their control, while at the same time yelling, "Marriage (hence Church and Government) good! No marriage bad!"

What an antiquated mentality.

treetalker··on Ask HN: I Need Advice
> … generally just being a bum

Hit the gym daily.

That will snap you out of the bad habits described.

You’ll feel better (physically, and about yourself).

Feeling better about yourself should dispel any fear of interviewing.

Do one thing every day: hit the gym.

treetalker··on The Milwaukee Brewers win the first World Series title in franchise history
I’m a fan of another team … but I’ve been rooting for the Brewers too. Great to see a smaller-market team win the World Series — especially when it’s their first time, and especially sweeping the Dodgers along the way! What a ride.

I only wish that they could have won the Series at home instead of in Tampa.

Congrats, Milwaukee fans! Very happy for you!

treetalker··on Police are using AI to pull over drivers for 'suspicious' behavior
Circumstantial evidence is certainly sufficient to convict in most (if not all) US jurisdictions.

Since you mentioned secondhand information, I think you might be thinking of hearsay.

treetalker··on Digital Hygiene (2025)
I question the suggestion to use FaceID to log into 1Password. At least in the US, the government can force you to use biometrics to access data (such activity generally does not the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination).

treetalker··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving

In this case, the attempts are simultaneously tortuous, torturous, and tortious!

treetalker··on Tesla Roadster
I recall that about 8 (10?) years ago the “Roadster 2” was advertised. Am I correct that that was repeatedly delayed and never delivered?

My sense is that this is just more Elon Musk bullshit that will never materialize.

treetalker··on Show HN: Florida HOAs are stealing homes
- No need to editorialize the title of the linked page. (Title of HN post should be corrected.)

- Not sure how the conclusion of “stealing” has been reached here.

- Non-Floridian readers should be made aware that lots of HOAs have imposed special assessments because of new statutory requirements after the Champlain Towers disaster in Surfside a few years ago. Those assessments effectively strive to catch up after years of neglecting building maintenance. Often they are hefty amounts, and many owners can’t keep up. Hence the liens and suits thereon. (There are many other causes of action, of course.)

treetalker··on Why aren't AI companies being charged for hacking?
General intent is intent to commit the act/omission (here, to build and deploy a system) and not an intent to achieve the ultimate end (the unlawful access of someone else’s network/computer). Specific intent is intent to achieve the particular result.

Some crimes require only general intent; some require specific intent.
