trocado··on Human brain is two separate organs, Stanford Medicine-led research finds
What is the difference between saying that the brain is two organs, as in the title, or a "composite organ" as in the actual paper? What makes an organ a single autonomous organ?
trocado··on Fastmail offers EU data region
This may not have much practical consequence, but still there's some symbolic value which is welcomed in today's geopolitical climate.
trocado··on Ancient Roman Board Game
It should be "novus ludus" not "nova ludus". (now go and write 100 times...)
trocado··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
Fwiw that post states:

> It has been pointed out to us that since we have our servers in the US, we are under US jurisdiction. We do not believe this to be the case. We do not have a legal presence in the US, no company incorporated in the US, no staff in the US, and no one in the US with login access to any servers located in the US. Even if a US court were to serve us with a court order, subpoena or other instruction to hand over user data, Australian communications and privacy law explicitly forbids us from doing so.

trocado··on Evolving descriptive text of mental content from human brain activity
"Mental content" seems way to broad for what is rather the sensorimotor part of speech.
trocado··on Aviation emissions could be halved without cutting journeys
Paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-025-03069-4
trocado··on 2002: Last.fm and Audioscrobbler Herald the Social Web
https://listenbrainz.org/ is an open source scrobbler, with the advantage that it leverages the musicbrainz database and connects listens to artist and track IDs instead of names, avoiding duplicate confusion. You can keep last.fm and submit to both of you like.
trocado··on Trying to play an isomorphic piano (2022) [video]
> Not sure how much difference this makes over the long run

I tune in all fourths as well. For me it has made a huge difference since I made the jump some years ago. Putting voicings, patterns, etc., into muscular memory is faster and a lot less work. For my purposes, it makes the instrument more intuitive with a better ear-hand connection. Even very advanced players trip on the G-B strings oddity (with things like playing a fast, angular melody on different string sets, without preparation, for example).

trocado··on How the Curse of Lisp impacts your business (even if you don't use Lisp)
Or just clone into local-projects and quicklisp will load from there.
trocado··on The LaTeX fetish (Or: Don't write in LaTeX It's just for typesetting) (2016)
Org-mode
trocado··on The Emacs Window Management Almanac
I use the <apps> key, usually I hit it with the base of my right hand.
trocado··on The beautiful dissociation of the Japanese language
Actually most if not all of those verb endings are used colloquially (the most important exception would be the second person plural, which is only used in some regions of Portugal).
trocado··on Launch HN: Soundry AI (YC W24) – Music sample generator for music creators
I don't know about phenomenal AI, but Band-in-a-box is a classic tool for this kind of thing.
trocado··on A WASM Common Lisp REPL
project: https://github.com/chee/eclweb
trocado··on Show HN: FlingUp, a Reddit-like platform Ive been building for the last 2 years
I like the snappy UI, but I think it needs a search box for communities/posts at least.
trocado··on The benefits of everything being a buffer in Emacs
It's very obvious because you have to activate the wdired mode, and then accept the changes.
trocado··on Aleatoric music
> most of the post IIWW ("classical") music that was composed in Europe is so unconnected to - not just wider audience - but what I'd call a physical aspect of music: pulse and resonance

On the contrary, pulse and resonance are two of the most intensively explored themes on post WW2 music!

Just two examples from the top of my head (among uncountable others...):

- pulse: https://youtu.be/qdzvk1BJOBQ (Ligeti)

- resonance: https://youtu.be/1v7onrjN6RE (Grisey)

trocado··on Corman Lisp development environment for MS Windows
AFAIK, yes: https://www.sbcl.org/manual/index.html#Threading
trocado··on Corman Lisp development environment for MS Windows
I didn't try Corman Lisp (I will), but it should be noted that sbcl works just fine in windows, despite a warning it used to carry about it being unstable. The difficulty of developing in windows, in my experience, has more to do with external things like ssl or sqlite, that may not be present in the system or may not be installed in the way that's expected by a lisp library, which wasn't as tested under windows.
trocado··on Learning algebra in my 60s
Despite the title, I don't think the article is about algebra "making you smarter", but more whether you can learn it successfully and if by pursuing such an endeavor you can hamper age-induced cognitive decline.
trocado··on Ask HN: Do you create music? let's hear it
I'm a guitarist/composer/improvisor/programmer. Listen here: http://nunotrocado.com/projectos.html
trocado··on A Review of Language Learning Tactics
> In my opinion -- this is only my opinion -- immersion by living in a country is overrated as a technique. It helps for sure, but it really isn't necessary. The elements above are what are needed -- without these, even immersion is ineffective. I've met Irish guys living in Barcelona who couldn't speak any of the local languages. I've first hand experience living in several places where I never learned the local language because there was always a way around it.

Immersion works when there's no other way around it. In particular for native english speakers, you'd have to be in a situation where either most people you interact with don't know enough english for communication to be effective, or (and this is very rare in my limited experience) you would have to make an effort to stop using your native language altogether, even when locals address you in it. It also helps when there aren't any family/friends/compatriots around so you can't really "cheat" and you won't be able to function on a daily basis unless you learn and practice the local language.

trocado··on Will Garmin Pay $10m Ransom to End Two-Day Outage?
If it matters, as a customer /user, I'd rather forego all my data on their cloud and wait whatever time is necessary for them to rebuild the systems, than have Garmin pay the ransom.
trocado··on Coronavirus: Hard-hit Brazil removes data amid rising death toll
Let me put this in a more constructive way: why do you think "global media" are rooting for Bolsonaro's failure? And: given the less than ideal infrastructure to face the pandemic, what has been Bolsonaro's policy to counteract this? Can we honestly say that he's been "doing what he can"?
trocado··on Coronavirus: Hard-hit Brazil removes data amid rising death toll
How chilling that several Brazilian posters are actually afraid of publishing negative opinions about the government.
trocado··on Coronavirus: Hard-hit Brazil removes data amid rising death toll
> Political leader which doesn't fit

He doesn't fit because he's more incompetent, more corrupt, more egocentric, emptier of any moral values, more oblivious to the interests of his co-citizens, than any other political leader ever was (in Brazil and elsewhere), right?

trocado··on SuperCollider – A platform for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition
There's cl-collider (https://github.com/byulparan/cl-collider) for those interested in controlling the SuperCollider server with Common Lisp, which is a particular fruitful combination (DSLs, flexibility, etc).
trocado··on Making Emacs Popular Again
If you have, say, a list on consecutive lines with a blank line in between them, and you want to delete a character after the second word, add some text at the end, and delete the blank line - with keyboard macros you record these transformations once and then apply them to the rest of the items.
trocado··on Initial Impressions of WSL 2
WSL2 is great but there are still some very annoying bugs, like when the host sleeps/hibernates and the clock drifts [1], or windows detach from the x server and can't be brought back.
