true_pk··on Launch HN: Issen (YC F24) – Personal AI language tutor
Hey, it’s great to see other people learn Vietnamese! And your feedback is on point. I’m still at the beginning and just built a tool to help me learn basic phrases. I will very much appreciate the feedback! https://envn.app
true_pk··on Show HN: I made an app to learn guitar scales
Thanks! Would appreciate your feedback once you try it out.
true_pk··on I am leaving Canada
Good catch. If put into stock market, It would be closer to 55-60 years, adjusted for inflation.
true_pk··on Stop saying advertising is evil
How do you learn about brands? Let's say you want to buy a watch, how do you find and pick one?
true_pk··on Stop saying advertising is evil
Hey, author here. Good point! Historically, all sales people are in a way manipulators, and the best of them are those who know human psychology and behavior. This hasn't changed with how we advertise today. But we should be more restrictive with how we handle the data, who can access it and what they can have access to. That's not as much on the advertising industry as it is on regulations around technology, which is only a recent subject for discussion.
true_pk··on I failed moving my Google calendar to Proton
Good point! In truth, that was the first starting point for me as well. Then browser. Then everything else :)
true_pk··on I failed moving my Google calendar to Proton
This is neat! I will take a look.
true_pk··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
https://blymp.ca is about $600/mo with two clients.

Building an MVP took two weeks, and getting the first paying customers another two.

I wrote about it here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42344002

It’s a B2B SaaS in out-of-home advertising. We found that buying ads outside the digital realm is hard and the only alternative are marketplaces that take away control over media owner’s inventory. So we did for those companies what Shopify did for small businesses — we gave them the tools to sell and to market.

true_pk··on My second year without a job
Hi! Author here. You are very much on point. I only recently started looking for part-time jobs, and perhaps I should have mentioned it in the post. It's precisely what you said -- financial stress started impacting my hobbies and sports, and that's where I don't feel as comfortable anymore.
true_pk··on Why thrifting is great – and why you should do it too

true_pk··on Show HN: guitar + programming = Guitartonic?
Good point! Thank you once again, seems like I have a few things to work on :)
true_pk··on Show HN: guitar + programming = Guitartonic?
Hi, this is great feedback, thank you so much! I love your idea with showing which way the position will shift, will definitely consider adding it to the tool. As for the scales, any suggestions which ones I should add next?
true_pk··on Show HN: Angus TV+ – Track What You Watch, Share, and Save on Streaming
Hey, poster here.

This is a blog post about a project by a good friend of mine who isn’t active on HN, so I’m sharing it here to help bring awareness (similar to what I did for another friend’s project previously). I genuinely think his tool, Angus TV+, is amazing. It's simple, clever, and thoughtfully designed. Plus, he writes really well!

It’s still in a loose public beta, but it has real potential to bring value to people who love TV and movies or want a more social, organized way to manage their media habits. I’d love to hear what the HN community thinks. Feedback, feature ideas, or just general impressions would mean a lot to him!

true_pk··on Men hand over Bitcoins worth two billion euros to German federal police
I ticked every rejection box I could tick, and still somehow managed to press a poorly — or rather very smartly — positioned button to accept all cookies. Only to find out that the article was in German, because I couldn’t even see it in the first place due to a full-screen cookie banner /shrug/
true_pk··on Take the Road Most Documented
Yes! Gentoo was my first Linux distro, and I am grateful for the wiki. It made my hard ride with Linux — it’s been 15 years now — highly enjoyable
true_pk··on Why "What do you do?" is a terrible question
I like that, will take a note for future conversations!
true_pk··on Why "What do you do?" is a terrible question
Hey! Author here. Would you mind giving an example?
true_pk··on Automatic class sorting with Prettier (2022)
Deployment can be as easy and as complicated as you like it. Nobody took away an option to upload a single html file via SFTP.
true_pk··on AsmBB – a lightweight web forum engine written in assembly language
In the header, there’s a button to disable live notifications.

On a side note, showing a list of forum users to someone who isn’t logged in is probably a bad idea. Is it something configurable?

true_pk··on Show HN: I made a guitar solo improvisation app
I wish :( For now I am taking free resources wherever I can find it and for the rest it comes from youtube, but more of a temporary measure. I’m in contact with a few artist and am trying to get properly licensed tracks for most, if not all, scales asap
true_pk··on Show HN: I made a guitar solo improvisation app
Thanks! Always happy to hear kind words ^^
true_pk··on Parsing an Undocumented File Format
Great job! Good to know I wasn’t alone parsing some weird binary formats. Back at the time I created this helper module in python to make my days a bit more bearable: https://github.com/sergeyshilin/byter
