trwired··on The Case for Stanislaw Lem
> There was a German TV show adapted from that: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0978537/ (Ijon Tichy, Space Pilot)

I just want to point out that Ijon Tichy is a different character than Pirx and a hero of its own series of tales. The confusion is understandable, because at at a glance they appear to be very similar characters.

trwired··on Replacing Disqus with GitHub Comments
There is another big (in my eyes) downside to using Reddit for such purpose: Reddit threads are automatically archived after six months, at which point no new comments can be added to them. Of course nothing stops a user from creating a fresh thread, but that leads to fragmentation of comments and if you want to somehow mitigate this, it introduces additional effort.
trwired··on Blip: A bytecode compiler for Python 3
None. Standard interpreter automatically compiles modules to bytecode on the first import and stores them in .pyc files. Compiling specific files is also possible. I am assuming this project is simply an exercise on the author's part.

edit: precision

trwired··on How the Witcher 3’s economy was saved by polynomial least squares
The power they wield is not that big, although the games arguably aren't great at conveying that. A witcher is a glorified rat catcher and is treated accordingly by the society.
trwired··on Multiprocess Firefox
This is the exact opposite of my experience with current nightly. The browser feels very snappy and I have yet to see memory usage climb above ~350 MB with a multitude of JavaScript heavy tabs open. (Although I don't know if e10s is directly responsible for the latter.)
trwired··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
I don't really understand the sentiment that you have expressed in your aside. If they deliver an interesting and/or useful product, why not reward them with credit?
trwired··on Tales from the Trenches: I was SWATed

trwired··on One Professional Russian Troll Tells All
Do you have any reliable proof of the claim that US is responsible for colored revolutions in Ukraine (as opposed to citizens themselves taking matters into their own hands)? By reliable I mean reputable sources, not a random website no one has ever heard before. I'm asking because what you just did here - that is make a backhanded comment suggesting countries opposing Russian agenda don't operate on their own accord, while suggesting they are steered by the US - is a prime example of how Russian trolls operate.
trwired··on Gogs, an alternative to Gitlab
Everything's doable, but that is not the point. I once had a client - a one person shop kind of deal - who asked me to install a ticketing software on the same account they hosted their website from. They liked Redmine, another RoR app, so I set it up for them and suddenly everything went down, because the CPU and memory usage went above of what their plan offered. They decided it's not beneficial for them to pay for a better plan, so instead we went with a PHP based solution. So yeah, in some cases technology can be as much - if not more - important, as the list of provided features.
trwired··on Gogs, an alternative to Gitlab
As a potential user I find the information on the technology used to be pretty helpful, actually. It sets up my hopes for an app that is lighter on the resources than the Ruby on Rails based GitLab, with maybe easier installation process as well.
trwired··on Mozilla not accepted for Google Summer of Code 2015
Apologies for merging the two in my head. However, as of now, you can still connect to Google Talk and the shutdown that was mentioned did not affect third party clients. The conclusion is that XMPP is still used at Google to some extent (although there is no way of telling how well or how long it will be used and supported in the future, but that is beside the point).
trwired··on Mozilla not accepted for Google Summer of Code 2015
What they did was discontinue support for their old desktop client. Third party clients still use XMPP to connect with Hangouts. More on the subject could be read here: http://xmpp.org/2015/03/no-its-not-the-end-of-xmpp-for-googl...
trwired··on On Rust and Nim
My impression is that Nim was in the right place at the right time and unintentionally piggybacked on the interest surrounding languages such as Rust and Go. This perception may be completely wrong. However, I do remember all these languages started gaining popularity within the span of several months. Before that Nim (then Nimrod) existed, but remained in obscurity.
trwired··on Nim Advocacy and Promotion Strategies
Thank you for the link, but I can reasonably expect that Qt bindings for Nim either exist or will become available soon, as most languages that get any traction get them. I still don't know, however, if it's a good choice to try and put a GUI app together in Nim. Will it surprise me with a huge binary, like Rust does? [1] Will it be easy to develop in it on multiple platforms? I can find all those things myself, but in the spirit of what the OP describes as putting the best foot forward, I'd like to be able to quickly assess whether the language is potentially a better choice to solve my next problem than those I already know or am planning to learn.

trwired··on Nim Advocacy and Promotion Strategies
I have some experience using C++ with both Qt and wxWidgets, but I am looking for an excuse to learn something new. And a systems language with Python inspired syntax and comparable expressiveness that is suitable for creating GUI apps is something that would definitely make me want to investigate Nim further.
trwired··on Nim Advocacy and Promotion Strategies
I am looking for a systems programming language that would work well with battle prooven GUI toolkits such as Qt. Would Nim be a good choice?
trwired··on Python 2.x vs 3.x use survey
I would hazard a guess that it is because the statement allows for easily adding a `print varname` in your code while debugging.
