ttrrooppeerr··on The history of Alt+number sequences
> For example, you could enter ñ by holding Alt and typing Numpad1 Numpad6 Numpad4, then releasing the Alt key.

To this day, this remains the best way to insert the character, I have tried the PowerToys Quick Accent [1] but I had so many missed characters when typing fast.

ttrrooppeerr··on Dublin-NY portal temporarily shut due to 'inappropriate behaviour'
And everyone in Ireland surely saw this one coming.

It is a sad state the country is in and can't bring themselves to fix it.

ttrrooppeerr··on Show HN: Balancing game for the mobile browser with increasing difficulty
Worked for me using A/S/D/F
ttrrooppeerr··on OpenAI GPT-4 vs. Groq Mistral-8x7B
A bit off-topic but maybe not? Any words on GPT-5? Is that coming? Or is OpenAI just focusing on the Sora model?
ttrrooppeerr··on Pingora: build fast, reliable and programmable networked systems

ttrrooppeerr··on Berlin TYPE: The official type for the city of Berlin (2020)
Thank you! It was a small itch I had while walking around the city and you managed to scratch it, really appreciated.
ttrrooppeerr··on Berlin TYPE: The official type for the city of Berlin (2020)
Somehow related(?) but when I was in Berlin I noticed all buildings have a white square with a black number for the building number. This is consistent across most (all?) parts of the town but no local was able to explain me why or what's the background of that.

Something like this: https://www.google.com/maps/@52.5309649,13.4099152,3a,15y,52...

Anyone knows what's the name of the font (on topic!) and any backstory on those?

ttrrooppeerr··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
This reads like a crybaby manager upset with their future metrics.

ttrrooppeerr··on New UK record for wind power set today – 21.81 GW between 0900-0930 GMT

ttrrooppeerr··on BBC Basic returns on multiple platforms, open sourced
And why is always on the HN front page? Seems like never ending stream of news about it.
ttrrooppeerr··on ChatGPT with voice is now available to all free users
More like the flipped a flag and tried to put some good PR out there to calm things down?
ttrrooppeerr··on After Boeing declines to pay up, ransomware group leaks 45 GB of data
Jacques's Law
ttrrooppeerr··on I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions
Sounds desperate, no? Kind of escaping the Titanic before the people in the third deck get into the boats (not that they will have a problem finding enough boats in this analogy)
ttrrooppeerr··on Bletchley Park codebreaker Margaret Betts has died
Nitpick but dead announcements usually don't include other than the name: https://hn.algolia.com/?q=has+died

Also, RIP, a true heroine.

Also, also, black top, please, dang.

ttrrooppeerr··on Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands
If you have a criminal mindset, yes. Otherwise, let them be and be happy.
ttrrooppeerr··on Kevin Mitnick has died
A mentor and a beacon for many of us. Rest in peace.
ttrrooppeerr··on Why won’t Google give an answer on whether Bard was trained on Gmail data?
The discussion here is not if it was trained or not in Gmail data, but on personal Gmail data. And that the definition of personal is vague and subject to interpretations.

They can say it was not trained on Gmail data because it was trained with Google’s Smart Compose, which it was trained on Gmail data.

Gmail Data -> Google’s Smart Compose -> Bard

It all depends on where you draw the line to stop reporting. Language is a powerful tool of deception.

ttrrooppeerr··on Guess the Game
I am doing better than I want to admit...

Taking 1 or 2 tries to guess all the current and past ones.

What do I want to say with this? Well done, you have me hooked!

ttrrooppeerr··on Show HN: Duffel (YC S18) – A faster way to sell flights
Two industries that newer generations use less and less. I still don't understand how this got funded but what do I know.
ttrrooppeerr··on Sam Altman calls Google a lethargic search monopoly
Every time they try to innovate or expand, they shoot themselves in the foot. They might have to stop comparing any endeavour they take with their Search revenue and let them fly free for a decade or so before making such U-turn decisions (talking about Stadia here)
ttrrooppeerr··on Calmira Reborn – a Windows 9x-inspired shell for Windows 3.1

FY23 Q3 is until end of March, FY24 Q1 starts in July for some companies.
ttrrooppeerr··on Thonny – Python IDE for beginners
It is ok if.... if I use it myself? It looks really neat!

And if I can add something, I feel like the addition of plugins might overcomplicate things and, at that point, maybe the users are ready to move into another IDE? Not saying it is bad, just maybe that not all IDEs need plugin support.
