tugberkk··on Microsoft Python Driver for SQL Server
I use it on Windows (and Linux) but can't get it to work on M1 chips.
tugberkk··on No CSS, No JavaScript. Longevity on the Web
I still do not see a future without javascript. If you are not using any external libraries, why not use it?
tugberkk··on Some thoughts on LLMs and software development
Yes, can't remember who said it but LLM's always hallucinate, it is just that they are 90 something percent right.
tugberkk··on Bookmarks.txt is a concept of keeping URLs in plain text files
you can write a program which randomly opens up a bookmark so you can get notified at least per some day/week.
tugberkk··on Ask HN: In 15 years, what will a gas station visit look like?
Yes, no idea, people, cc and mobile payment, probably digital, yes.
tugberkk··on One year after switching from Java to Go
why the downvote on this? is it wrong?
tugberkk··on Programming in Lua (first edition) (2003)
I believe we can still do them for fun, for practice. But having them readily available (also, tested) when you are trying to build something is much better.
tugberkk··on My son (9 yrs old) used plain JavaScript to make a game, and wants your feedback
Great gameplay. I love stuff like this where you are having fun with a game while learning or using some knowledge.

I would like to recommend something else than Gemini by the way, my experience was not good with it.

tugberkk··on Show HN: Pigeonholed – A Letter Sorting Game
This is a very good game!
tugberkk··on A Student's Guide to Writing with ChatGPT
In academia, I see academics using ChatGPT to write papers. They get help with definitions, they even give the related work PDFs to it and make it write the part. No one fact checks. Students; they use it to write reports, homeworks and code.

GPT may be good for learning, but not for total beginners. That is key. As many people stated here, it can be good for those with experience. Those without, should seek for those experienced people. Then, when they have the basics they can get help from GPT to go further.

tugberkk··on Ask HN: What's the most creative 'useless' program you've ever written?
This is great!
tugberkk··on Ask HN: Why don't you use spaced repetition to learn, despite its effectiveness?
Can get help from LLM for card generation.
tugberkk··on Skeptical of rewriting JavaScript tools in "faster" languages
sure. one is strongly typed and the other weakly typed.
tugberkk··on Show HN: Beautiful Usernames – 18M+ random aesthetic usernames for your project
Like the gfycat filenames. I would love to see a reference to them, I believe they popularized this approach.
tugberkk··on Generating sudokus for fun and no profit
This should be an academic paper, great writing.
tugberkk··on Ask HN: What do you use LLMs for?
I use it for technical questions I have instead of Google now.
tugberkk··on Ask HN: Is it possible to do research outside academy?
It is very hard to do testing on theoretical side of things. It is also possible to cheat on experimental results. On top of that, it eliminates the possibility of redoing (or publishing previously done results) if there is no significant contribution.

I think academic publishing is not in a good place right now and should be improved, but I don't personally see any problem with the concept. Thank you for your insights on the matter.

tugberkk··on Ask HN: Is it possible to do research outside academy?
We should give a damn. As you said, anyone can publish anything on the internet, how would we know whether it is valid or not?

Peer-review is important. I know it is not working great, but it is working to some degree.

tugberkk··on Dondurma: The Turkish ice cream eaten with a knife and fork
Still turkish.
tugberkk··on Dondurma: The Turkish ice cream eaten with a knife and fork
When was this? Afaik (35-year old Turkish) this is not a custom.
tugberkk··on Ask HN: What type of applications is Golang best suited for?
Can't we do the same thing with python, flask? Yes, not compiled and strongly typed but it's still easy to instantiate a web server with a few lines of code, no?
tugberkk··on Japan's push to make all research open access
same here in Turkey. https://dergipark.org.tr/en has a lot of journals free of access. One can also find the phd and msc thesis too in https://tez.yok.gov.tr/UlusalTezMerkezi/giris.jsp
tugberkk··on Show HN: bookmarksheet - manage your bookmarks with ease
Looks great. I have a similar set up. In my Windows machine, I created a very simple AHK script which I can bring up with win+t. Then, the link I added is turned into a link with a timestamp and appended to an html page which resides in my Dropbox folder.

Its on the cloud now and I can open that up from everywhere I want.

tugberkk··on Ask HN: Favorite Live Coding YouTubers
Tsoding.
tugberkk··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
If they are teaching the specific research topic, yes. Otherwise, you need to come up with 14-week course material for different courses.
tugberkk··on A Tour of the Lisps
I have the same problem. It is a good language to teach to non-cs majors. If you want to build something out of the box, use Python. However, GPT is coming and maybe we won't even use Python anymore for simpler tasks.
tugberkk··on Cleaning up my 200GB iCloud with some JavaScript
Apart from the iCloud fiasco, I very much like these kind of programming. We generally lost the fun of it try to make enterprise/corporate programs, we forgot to use them for personal tasks.
tugberkk··on 4B If Statements
I believe this is the way. That is why I sometimes think whether programming can be taught by using shell environment at first. Every command is like a program and you can do a lot without loops.

Piping also helps. But maybe piping is not a good way to start, dunno.

tugberkk··on Ask HN: Why is GUI programming so hard?
We can still use browsers as UI without using any cloud.
tugberkk··on Challenging projects every programmer should try (2019)
I like watching Tsoding in my spare time and I love what he calls "recreational programming". That is what we need imho, more recreational programming.
