tuna74··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
You will get much more input lag doing this which really hurts the game playing experience.
tuna74··on Blaise Pascal invented fixed route public transport (2024)
"More importantly, even when it is working they do not coordinate arrival times, such that it is exceptionally common to arrive on one mode, where the platform faces directly the other mode, but it has just departed. 30 seconds of scheduling either side would greatly increase efficiency, but it's nobody's department."

This worked perfectly when I was in Sydney.

Is the Linux driver available?
tuna74··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
Wouldn't it be more like 74% after 30 years?
tuna74··on Waymo in Toronto
There are very few reasons why a Waymo should get on a ferry. It can take you to the ferry and then you can get another transportation (maybe even a Waymo!) when you disembark.
tuna74··on Waymo in Toronto
Executives, definitely yes. One person should be responsible for automated systems and services. The CEO is the most logical choice.
tuna74··on SF could have dense, fine-grained, family-friendly Neighborhood, Not Megaproject
I can't remember a big disagreement. Me and my wife had to put up money to buy into an existing complex (it is basically like a condo).
tuna74··on Gaming on Linux without cheating
If you don't want to use this then it really does not matter to you. Or am I missing something?
tuna74··on Gaming on Linux without cheating
"Probably the most egregious. Why am I not allowed to compile my own kernel? Why do I have to get a kernel, and modules, from specific, approved, vendors?"

Because otherwise you can cheat of course. You can code in whatever you want in your own Linux.

tuna74··on A city-building game in which the city would prefer you didn't
You don't have to live in a city if you don't want to. In Japan you can choose if you want to live in the countryside or in the smack middle of Osaka.
tuna74··on SF could have dense, fine-grained, family-friendly Neighborhood, Not Megaproject
I live like this, it works great.

Some of us that live in more like townhouses have our own gardens/yards as well.

tuna74··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
He just lied about that.
tuna74··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
Read the linked article.

It is OK to fail. It is not OK to continuously lye to people who have provided you with money (or anyone else for that matter).

tuna74··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
He was a very entertaining blogger! RIP.

However, he was also ripping people off and making up stuff: https://www.jeremyreimer.com/rockets-item.lsp?f=true&p=272

tuna74··on Pirating the Pirates
"It certainly feels like physical media is dying right now. Maybe more reason to switch to investing in it over streaming services, not that an individual's budget decisions in this vein will affect the company's bottom lines enough that they will notice."

What is an ocean if not a million drops?

tuna74··on Pirating the Pirates
That first quote in the article perfectly sums up how people can change.
tuna74··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
You also funnel money back to the person who bought the media in the first place, and they might use the money to buy more media.
tuna74··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Image if all people who don't want to use Sway would post the same opinion every time anyone would mention DEs on Linux.
tuna74··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
"But it's a lot of small stuff like you copy / extract a file then no more window just a small indicator in the corner of the file explorer which cannot stay on screen so i can track the progress easily, and what happen if I close the explorer ? Does it continue in the background or stop because everything is closed i'll never know."

This is Hacker News. You can just try and see what happens.

tuna74··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
Some nice ideas here!

However, I think it is better to think in terms of open source "desktops" than to think that any UI would be the best for everyone.

tuna74··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Yes, and you don't support the people making the media either!
tuna74··on iPhone Duo
Some people seem to get offended if companies make products with different tradeoffs* than they would make.

*Thinner which means less battery.

tuna74··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Yeah, wonder if things have changed in 15 years....
tuna74··on The Amazon tax
Well, now you know why that world went away.
tuna74··on Linux 7.2
I think it is mostly "marketing" for Igalia's services. If you want to pay people to do "stuff" in Linux and adjacent projects like Mesa, Igalia seems very competent.
tuna74··on The title cards in Blade Runner are amazing
Ridley Scott has made several amazing movies after Blade Runner. The latest film from him that I really liked was The Last Duel.
tuna74··on Just because a game is on disc doesn't mean it will work in the future
Yeah, if we want physical media we have to buy what is produced.
tuna74··on IMAX vs. IMAX 70mm: The difference between these two cinema formats
There are a lot of cinemas showing The Odyssey projected from actual 70 mm film. You can probably find one pretty close to you.
