tunnuz··on Matt Trout has died
Sad news :(
tunnuz··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
Zeldman was one of my heroes in the 00s. I would argue that the list could also include Eric Meyer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_A._Meyer).
tunnuz··on ALICE detects the conversion of lead into gold at the LHC
Had they been more more optimistic they would have called it MIDAS.
tunnuz··on PhD Timeline
Honest.
tunnuz··on Scientists crack how aspirin might stop cancers from spreading
That’s a very interesting thought. Presumably stuff like CRISPR will make our meat code open source and we’ll be able to deploy hot fixes ourselves.
tunnuz··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
I always assumed that it was something to do with people getting increasingly frustrated with the struggle of keeping up with stuff.
tunnuz··on I've Acquired a New Superpower
That's so cool, thanks for sharing this. I managed to do all of them, in the impossible one I identified correctly the area, but couldn't pinpoint the difference.
tunnuz··on Raspberry Pi 500 and Raspberry Pi Monitor on sale now
I should have waited to buy the 400 a few months ago.
tunnuz··on Show HN: Hacker Herald – like HN but with crowdsourced pics and subtitles
I love it, I wonder if LLMs couldn't be used to generate some pictures.
tunnuz··on Voyager 1 Breaks Its Silence with NASA via Radio Transmitter Not Used Since 1981
This stuff will never not blow my mind.
tunnuz··on Show HN: Asterogue, my sci-fi roguelike, is now playable on the web
I'd love to be able to make stuff like this, very cool!
tunnuz··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Excellent program, the only real competitor to Photoshop. I kinda liked that they were independent.
tunnuz··on NotebookLM's automatically generated podcasts are surprisingly effective
:O
tunnuz··on Database “sharding” came from Ultima Online? (2009)
I played Renaissance and the following one on unofficial servers for about 6 years between 2003 and 2010. My offline and online friends would easily play 6-8 hours per day, and when we were offline we were talking about it. It was like a second life and an incredible escape, but looking back at it we were all addicted to it pretty badly. I get flashbacks and cravings to this day.
tunnuz··on The brain simulates actions and their consequences during REM sleep
I wonder if this is why we generally experience making better decisions when we have habits that foster good quality sleep.
tunnuz··on How I Use "AI"
100%
tunnuz··on We Remember Noam Chomsky, the Intellectual and Moral Giant
It’s been taken down!
tunnuz··on About the solar powered website (2022)
Same, what a cool piece of the Internet. I have nothing but love for it.
tunnuz··on Building SimCity: How to put the world in a machine
Good luck with the baby and congrats for the book. <3
tunnuz··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
AI for short?
tunnuz··on UI elements with a hand-drawn, sketchy look
I use Excalidraw for sketching with a similar outcome.
tunnuz··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
Can any of you billionaires save this?
tunnuz··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
I can still remember my ICQ number by heart, but have no access to it.
tunnuz··on Immersive Linear Algebra (2015)
I studied physics-based rendering from a book by one of the two authors (T. A-M), and it was written excellently. I'll have a look at this for sure, as I need a refresher every now and again.
tunnuz··on Deep Reinforcement Learning: Zero to Hero
Does it rely heavily on python, or could someone use a different language to go through the material?
tunnuz··on AI-generated sad girl with piano performs the text of the MIT License
Aw.
tunnuz··on Wreck of Shackleton's 'Endurance' discovered in Antarctic depths (2022)
Thanks for the recommendation. On a related note, I have enjoyed The Terror, inspired by the account of Sir Franklin’s lost expedition. Also the audiobook rendition is amazing.
tunnuz··on Adventures Making Vegemite
Amazing! I love Vegemite ever since living in Australia. When we later moved to Vienna I bought some with me. My first born has never been anywhere near Australia but is addicted to butter and Vegemite on toast. We also use it to make vegan versions of Italian recipes requiring anchovies.
tunnuz··on Brain waves appear to wash out waste during sleep in mice
Same, but the way I read it is that now we know the “how”.
tunnuz··on Show HN: I made Vinlo – Spinning artwork video for your music
Props! Good luck with the app!
