On a whole, the momentum has shifted: developers have shifted to Wayland.

I've switched to Wayland. On GNOME I haven't noticed any benefits, nor any costs. It has been a no-op.

I agree that the isolated failure mechanism in this case is a strength of X11, but it's too far to extrapolate that to the designs as a whole.
