turtlebits··on The U.S. Power Grid
Poke at it and explore! Things on the internet do not owe anyone anything.
turtlebits··on In Nigeria, Solar Panels Are the New Wedding Gift
The nice thing about solar is that you can start small and add incrementally.

I dont know what the $4500 includes, but you can fairly easily get 1kw of solar and 5kWh battery and inverter for 1k USD.

turtlebits··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
All my air filters are sized to clean air while being quiet.

Turning them up to med/high would just cause too much airflow.

turtlebits··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
Does that mean your air doesn't get filtered if you stop or decide to turn down the white noise?

I prefer having quiet air filters that I can run all day (based on air quality) instead of noisy ones I only use at night.

turtlebits··on The iPhone Duo
It's likely Apple is optimizing for the unfolded experience rather than the outer screen.

While researching Samsung folding phones, I found it interesting that some users seem to rarely unfold it. I'd guess the Samsung did the opposite and chose an aspect ratio matching regular phones, which gives the inner display suboptimal usability, especially for media.

turtlebits··on Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
Getting tired of all the bystander commentary. It's a toy for rich people. If there's 0 chance you're going to buy it, who really cares about your opinion.
turtlebits··on What changes when your search index lives on S3?
Because managing disks/volumes/partitions sucks from an ops perspective.
turtlebits··on Tesla Roadster
It's for the ultra rich and a tech showcase, so probably will be classified as off-road use only.
turtlebits··on Tesla Roadster
From the interview, they says it takes 6-8 hours to fill and you get 1 "launch" before its depleted in under a second.
turtlebits··on Tesla Roadster
Used EV's can be had for sub 25k all day long. The Slate is also technically sub 25k
turtlebits··on Show HN: OneDeploy – Managed open-source apps with nightly backups and TLS
One app per server? And charging $85/month to host Immich (on a 4 core/8gb VPS)? This pricing is ridiculous.

https://onedeploy.co/software/immich

turtlebits··on What I self-host
Systemd is declarative runtime, but doesn't handle the deployment spec.
turtlebits··on What I Self-Host
Noone builds anything without a vision of what it will look like. Blueprints are declarative specs. Why bother with instructions if you dont need to?

Many projects, like Immich, only provide docs for docker images/compose deployment.

turtlebits··on What I self-host
Pets are totally fine if you consistency/reliability arent that important. Homelabs can be fun ;)
turtlebits··on What I self-host
Not requiring friends/family to use a client to access my services is so much simpler.

I also use Adguard which act a VPN to filter traffic. I dont feel like messing around to get both working.

turtlebits··on What I self-host
Self hosting is great. The access part is hard.

Pangolin was the missing piece I needed, to not expose my servers to the internet and easily have my services publicly accessible with built in auth.

Tailscale kind of worked, but it was a hassle needing the client on mobile device and it being a VPN.

With vibe coding, I have more of my own apps running than pre-built.

turtlebits··on What I self-host
Running all these services without a declarative/standard way of deployment, ie docker compose or k3s/k8s is a bit mind boggling to me.

I self host on a bunch of different hardware, OSes, providers. I want the least fiddling as possible.

turtlebits··on What I self-host
Its a single config that lets you run multiple services (and can keep them running), upgrades are just editing an image tag.

Don't have to look at cli docs to figure out how to run it.

Doesn't have access to my file system, logs are easy.

turtlebits··on Apple HomeView
Nest hub also likely does little locally and sends everything to Google.
turtlebits··on Apple HomeView
Any portable device as a Matter hub would be pretty useless.

The Apple TV and Homepod mini already support Matter.

turtlebits··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
IME The amount of time spent on shopping and managing for a cheapo VM isn't worth it, considering you'll likely only be able to fit one service per server.

Id rather have a single more powerful server and host everything there.

turtlebits··on Tell HN: GitHub refuses to remove cracked copies of my software after a month
Piracy is rampant, platform providers aren't going to be able to keep up, especially in this AI age.

IME, the best route is to disincentivize it, make it harder to copy (obfuscation , etc) or just change your product/lower friction.

If people don't want ads, offer a low-cost ad free option. Having auto-play video ads is extremely distracting.

turtlebits··on Supabase is acquiring Turso
If yiu had the resources/time, why wouldn't you challenge or improve status quo?

Sqlite is excellent but I still have many gripes with it, especially around defaults.

turtlebits··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
A pro device is going to be expensive. Non gamers won't buy it, let alone $60+ games.
turtlebits··on iPhone Duo
$2k for a new product line isn't rough. It's on par with other competitors.
turtlebits··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
Solar water heaters (including evacuated vacuum tube) are great for efficiency, but PV has gotten so cheap and reliable that it's almost never worth a dedicated solar water heater unless you're extremely constrained for space.
turtlebits··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
Chinese brands have all but caught up, they're within a few percentage points in performance, but 3-4x cheaper.

The additional cost barrier being you can't self install or Mitsubishi or get any warranty on a self install, which means you'll likely pay 5-10x when you include install.

turtlebits··on iPhone Duo
Why do people keep asking the same question over and over? It's because of market demand.

I have an S24 ultra and I had an even bigger Sony xperia a while back. I have an old iPhone SE ( the one in the form factor of the iPhone 4) and find it absolutely unusable. Typing is a joke.

turtlebits··on Decapitating a MacBook (2025)
Yes it seems absurd optimizing to keep on 12v to save on the inverter overhead, but at the same time are running sealed lead acid batteries.

Switching to LFP would give them 5-6x the capacity for the same weight. Current rate for LFP is around $100/kWh.

turtlebits··on Decapitating a MacBook (2025)
Unless there is some space/weight constraint, adding additional battery capacity for idle draw and running an inverter is likely less expensive than trying to find 12v only equipment.

OP is running sealed lead acid batteries, they could have 5-6x the capacity using LFP batteries with the same weight.
