uberman··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
Is that not my point?
uberman··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
So just to be clear, what you are saying is that it's fine to talk about banning terms like "AI" as more important than inflation or the cost of diesel as those issues are resolved as we got what we asked for?
uberman··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
That fact that we are talking about this rather than say the price of diesel shows you his genius. Do you really think he cares about this term or the name of Lake Ontario in any actual way other than as a tail to wag the dog?
uberman··on Ask HN: Will Open Source force companies like Anthropic to shift their focus?
Do you mean fine tuning (say via LoRA) or working with an "open weight" model or are you talking about true "open source" models. If it is the latter, I struggle to understand how a circa GPT3 model requiring millions and millions to train would be a good use of resources over one of the former.
uberman··on Why do recruiters ask for 3 years of experience for entry-level jobs?
So the reason why I would ask is that I feel that no one (the employer nor the candidate) should ever want to fill a job with someone who is "fully qualified". I know that sometimes a tight market might mean that there are lots of fully qualified candidates and that presents for me a conundrum. In general though I would recommend to a candidate that they should always seek jobs they are not fully qualified for. Missing two years of required experience, no problem that is an opportunity for growth and an opportunity to explain that if you get the job it locks you into the opportunity. No employer really wants a fully qualified candidate that is constantly looking for a job opportunity where there is growth.
uberman··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Check the release dates of their best games against the date of purchase by EA and then compare everything after than to everything before that.
uberman··on EA is shutting down BioWare
... and then EA purchased them and forced the frostbyte engine and release cadence expectations and mechanics that worked for FIFA Ultimate Team.
uberman··on EA Shuts Down BioWare
Same here. Im sure some will blame woke but EA killed BioWare around 2014. BioWare games just were not compatible with the release cadence of other EA games like Madden and not compatible with frostbyte that did not even have an inventory system.
uberman··on Overview of the German AfD email leak
I appreciate the reporting from a technical perspective but it seems unethical at some level to do this.
uberman··on Ask HN: Am I the only dev who, with the advent if AI, want to work in a forest?
I often fantasize about working from a South Pacific beach

uberman··on Tom Cruise film 'Digger' could lose $245M
Its too bad as cruise plays two distict characters that could easily have blended together he did a great job but you would really have to enjoy his tropic thunder performace to appreciate digger
uberman··on Is library building obsoleted by AI coding?
Would you rather ai leverage postgres or reimplment it to support persistence for your project?
uberman··on Elon Musk to advise Pentagon on future of war
I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict it will be to buy a trillion dollars of drones/robots he makes.
uberman··on McDonald's Is Reportedly Using AI to "Dynamically" Price Its Burgers
I would be outranged... if I ate there.
uberman··on The secret lives of men who read romance books
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I like a GPT generated space opera every now and then though I would never be caught dead with a book with a traditional romance cover on it.
uberman··on Ask HN: Are you working less? By how much?
I feel like i am working harder and faster to the point i am fried
uberman··on Ask HN: Dead Internet
I have seen some similar "I'm a bot tasked with making money" want to spam post here on HN. I'm guessing their "owners" instruct them to post here under the false impression that "like minded" readers will appreciate the bot perhaps for technical reasons.
uberman··on Flock is rolling out a voluntary severance program
I have a friend who is one one the best programmers I know. He worked for an ad tech company more than a decade ago optimizing time to respond for personalized ad delivery. He was not proud of working to act on fingerprinting to optimize delivery but it was a challenging task and he framed his part as addressing the challenge not the ethics. People in our circle where like "good for you optimizing network delivery to 50ms!" even people who despised the idea of tracking users around the internet to serve them ads.

I'm sure most people who work for flock compartmentalize their jobs to "I work on fingerprinting vehicles" or "I work on advanced OCR", or "I work on creating camera to camera trajectory graphs". This way they don't need to think about (too often) the larger ramifications of what they are doing. When the press points out what is the reality and that most people are pissed at Flock then the employees likely have to confront what they do in a way that they never had to.

uberman··on Disney+ changes subscriber agreement to allow ads on every plan
If you were able to do so would the result not be the same. We dont accept your terms update so we and terminating your subscription. Essentially the same that you can do.
uberman··on Ask HN: Do you think the software industry has a good culture of whistleblowing?
No industry seems to have a good culture that supports whistle blowing
uberman··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
This. Can't you get your number moved to a new phone? I have never don't anything magic when upgrading my phone other than move contacts.
uberman··on Is anyone else losing their motivation to nerd out and tinker because of AI?
The opposite is true for me. I have always wanted to try Godot as a platform and AI is helping me make that happen.
uberman··on Claude Fable 5.1 cracked a cipher that has survived for 370 years in 40 min.
Much better link not the least is the description and name of the problem being solved!
uberman··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing?
When I was a kid twisting a swing so you could ride it as it untwisted was something that happend dozens of times every recess. This was something every kid did. If your playground equipment falls apart as a result of the standard way kids use a swing then I think that is a manufacture issue not criminal behavior by a 10 year old
uberman··on Ask HN: Can we do a karma reset?
He gave no links nor did the original post. I did no flagging and did not vote on any item in this thread. Yet I see that four accounts with a combined age of 10 days wants to complain about sock puppets.
uberman··on Ask HN: Can we do a karma reset?
So then no proof whatsoever? So for fun I looked at your user and color me shocked that you are complaining about the use of sock puppets while apparently using one yourself. Alternatively has 8 days allowed you to devine the inner workings of this site?
uberman··on Ask HN: Can we do a karma reset?
Do you have proof for you claims? I am under the impression that 500 rep essentially maxes out your standard privileges and that no reputation based weighting is applied to votes.

If your fear is that there are voting rings (which apparently the system tries to detect) then resetting the rep will give them more relative power not less.

Personally I dont pay any attention to the rep of a user when evaluating how I should or should not engage with them. I think things are working just fine at the moment.

If you are frustrated by repetitive homepage content, I recommend you switch to the "new" view as there is lots of diversity there.

Again, if you have any proof that a cadre of nefarious high profile users are somehow abusing the system I would love to see it.

uberman··on Ask HN: How do we deal with "hacking" Hacker News?
If the contnet aligns with the interests of this community as apparently it did generation a bunch of views that I'll take your word for, then if it really a problem? If the community does not like something they can ignore downvote and flag and it will go wherever the crap goes.
