Simplifying web interfaces for users
submissionscomments
usablebytes··on Poll: What common problems you face 'specifically' during interview scheduling?
Being from small company, the human resources function isn't organized. Everything mainly happens over phone, e-mail and on-the-desk chats. Finding a particular track after few weeks is almost impossible.

And when it comes to being a candidate the world is a horrible place. Some companies have put us through upto 16 rounds of technical discussions and you could clearly sense it that the panel have absolutely no idea how many earlier rounds have happened and respective feedback.

usablebytes··on Show HN: I mapped US medical prices. Save thousands by driving a few miles
Excellent problem choice and great work with the solution. http://pricemaps.betterdoctor.com/, too, have done a wonderful job with their version.

May be this will also make a great phone app. If users can pre-configure a couple of medical procedures (faced in their medical history), the app can show price comparisons on the map by default at every launch. This might help addressing the concern https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6864945.

usablebytes··on Work Can Wait
Full respect to 37signals for showing big guts and with very worthy reasons, too.

Although in my personal opinion both the matras are a bit extreme (1) Get it done and (2) Work can wait, I would anytime buy 37signals' reasoning over Microsoft's.

usablebytes··on To Persuade People, Tell Them a Story
I remember reading about this in Paul Smith's 'Lead with a Story' book. It genuinely makes a lot of difference to make people listen to you.
usablebytes··on An unofficial alternative to the HN interface
Excellent move! Cheers! Can we also look at those Arials at the top?
usablebytes··on Why JavaScript Will Become the Dominant Programming Language of the Enterprise
Will?
usablebytes··on Chemists Work to Desalt the Ocean for Drinking Water, One Nanoliter at a Time
Why do we usually utilize science to fix the wrong problem?

Shouldn't we be making more efforts on 1) Growing more trees 2) Reducing environmental pollution 3) Controlling human population

???

usablebytes··on AlloyUI – a framework built on top of YUI3
3 years back, when we had to use it with Liferay, the experience wasn't really great. Hope it has improved now; need to check.
usablebytes··on Ask HN: What is your experience making a free service completely paid?
Making a business (especially, its revenue model) that is based on somebody else's business is extremely risky and usually best avoided.
usablebytes··on What is a Full Stack developer? (2012)
A combination of Superman, He-Man and Spiderman. The one, that screws the world; real badly.
usablebytes··on “Well, He’s Not Going to Get Very Far”
"Assumption is the mother of all screwups"; and yet it is so natural to all of us.

Salute to Sarah for building an excellent open culture and Zach's courage to speak out. And yes, 'trust' is critical in organizations. Good story.

usablebytes··on Popular Websites Displayed in IE 5
Wikipedia stood good there. I'm sure with Netscape's then version, the scene would have been even worse.

But this is only visual aspect, which I believe, is the only part that's easy to measure. It would be interesting to think on how to make it 'easy' to add other dimensions like Functionality, SEO, Accessibility etc. to the list.

usablebytes··on The Truth About Entrepreneurs: Twice As Many Are Over 50 As Are Under 25
I don't think there is much to these statistics; surely, it was different 20 years back and it will be 20 years from now.
usablebytes··on Don’t Launch Your Product
UCD forces you to decide and keep focused on the target audience from the very beginning. That approach helps every corner of the business, I believe and would surely have helped you save the day. But as you said correctly, lesson learned.
usablebytes··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier
I believed so for years and haven't intentionally tried to read or watch news for almost more than 10 years; and I like it that way. Instead, I focus on tech updates especially related to the field I'm involved with. And feel, even sitting idle will do less harm, hypothetically.
usablebytes··on Why so many jobs are crappy
Not really. The work must be enjoyable for self before it help others. And that won't happen unless we know our interests.

E.g. Everyone at the restaurant admires good service; but not every waitress enjoys her job; those who do, keep their own as well as others' interests.

usablebytes··on Why so many jobs are crappy
I believe there are two types of workers. One who clearly knows what they enjoy doing and they seek their career in the same; others who never understand what their true interests are. The second type end up spending their lives doing the so called 'crappy' jobs; majority of human being falls under this category.
usablebytes··on What's Actually Wrong with Yahoo's Purchase of Summly
The beautiful girl Jenny falls for Chris and marries him. I think she has made a terrible mistake; it's natural to be jealous. But I keep the feelings to myself.
usablebytes··on Google Reader shutting down
Although, it is sad for the current Reader users, good thing about Google is, it admits its failures quickly and get over it.
usablebytes··on How should I deal with an employee who has slept with my wife?
Important question unanswered, before we could give any advice: When did your wife leave? Was it after you found out about the affair or before?

Ideally, our life partner cheating on us should hurt us more than somebody we mentored. But may be since the wife couldn't be controlled, the anguish is on the employee who can be controlled somehow.

The law, surely would support the employee as the personal matters can't be mixed with office. But yea, if you want to fire him, you can do with some other reasons, if not this.

usablebytes··on The best interface is no interface
Good article. Not sure why I feel I already read that stuff somewhere.
usablebytes··on Javascript Alternatives
Ok, I see your point and @jiggy2011's, too. But I still love JavaScript as it is :)
usablebytes··on Javascript Alternatives
I fail to see a point! JavaScript alternatives that each of it ultimately boils down to JavaScript. Why not just write JavaScript which looks like JavaScript and behaves like JavaScript?

May be we shouldn't call them 'alternatives' but just 'wrappers' - JavaScript Wrappers. But again, that's not the point. Why?

usablebytes··on Ask HN: Can a new LinkedIn competitor survive? If yes, what strategies can help?
A lot of good advice there; many thanks.
usablebytes··on Ask HN: Can a new LinkedIn competitor survive? If yes, what strategies can help?
Rightly mentioned. So, do you see any common gap they all have where a new competitor can capitalize on?
usablebytes··on Ask HN: Can a new LinkedIn competitor survive? If yes, what strategies can help?
I couldn't agree more. Thanks a lot for sharing.
usablebytes··on Ask HN: I need to categorize 150,000 products
Most likely 'search' as you already mentioned, would prove to be the most useful option here.

But to make sure, you can think about this approach. Get answers to these questions - (1) understand who the end users are (2) what problem are you trying to solve for them? (3) What kind of knowledge would they have before coming to this website? (4) What kind of information would they be searching on the site?

Each of these questions will have multiple answers. You will have to talk to the stakeholders (business owner, marketing dept etc.) to get this information. At the end of this exercise, you should be able to make groups of your end users. Could be 3 to 7 depending upon various demographic factors (1) age (2) location (3) domain knowledge (4) expectation etc.

Once you have these user groups decided, make profiles for each of the group. Profile basically describes that particular section of your user audience based on various characteristics like age, gender, education, language, computer experience, domain expertise and their expectation from the website.

Then the most challenging part - talk to at least 10-15 'real' users from each of your user groups and validate the 'expectations' part that you assumed above. In addition to that you can also try 'card sorting' and 'reverse card sorting' approaches to see how your users categorize the information you have.

People who are from Usability Analysis field, will understand what I'm talking about here, but @polyfractal, you can trust this as a proven scientific method for Information Architecture of your website content.

usablebytes··on A social network for programmers
I'm sorry but I couldn't relate the model used on home page anyway with myself or any of my programmer friends
usablebytes··on New Version of jsbin.com
Nice one. JsFiddle.net actually gives a lot more features. Did I miss anything?
