user-x··on A Look at Overnight Stays at US National Parks
I like the aesthetic of the circular plots and think it's very creative. Though if we were to take Mr. Tufte's advice to heart: the surface that's outlined by the colored ribbons does not increase in the same proportion as the actual number of visitors, which might influence the way the data is perceived visually. But I don't want to rain on somebody's parade who managed to make far more beautiful plots than I ever have..
user-x··on Wondering about the link between intelligence and meaning
Interesting point. I also think there is a sense of predestination that comes with a believe in God. This can have a reassuring effect when it comes to worrying about if you're on the right track in life (the track to "meaning"). I have read that some psychologists hypothesize this sense of predestination is what (in part) causes lower suicide rates among religious folks vs. non-religious folks.

Even though I'm aware of these positive effects, I still can't bring myself to believe in any God. I was raised atheist and I've always felt like a believe in the supernatural doesn't mix with an intellectual, scientific view on the world. This is of course completely due to my upbringing; there are plenty of great scientists who believe. I think this is an interesting inner conflict which I'm sure I share with many others.

user-x··on Electric scooters are causing injuries and accidents
Can I just mention I find it very strange that there are hip techy Silicon Valley startups that invest their time in these scooters, when from a pure engineering perspective these things are doomed to be unsafe. COG is very high above the ground, which makes keeping balance more difficult. Wheels are close to the COG in the horizontal direction, making it easier to fall forward over the steering handle. Wheel radius is small causing the scooter to get stuck behind all pits in the road and stuff like that. I mean sure it’s fun to ride these things but please tell me this is not the Technology Age’s means of transportation. Apart from that I found this article to be quite sensational. I’m missing the cold hard statistics proving these things are actually dangerous, which do not (yet) exist as stated in the article itself.

Reminds me of Harry Potter in the Lestrange vault.
user-x··on Colorizing and restoring old images with deep learning
It's interesting to see how the algorithm seems to turn aerial photos into romantic paintings. My guess is that the model was trained on mostly up-close photos and that the colors don't map exactly to aerial photos because color intensity fades over large distances.

On that note it is cool to see how the algorithm does work for both indoor and outdoor photos. Indoor settings tend to have dark backgrounds and outdoor settings have light backgrounds.

Very cool project.
