user2722··on Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS
Isn't it easier to kick to the back anyone with a mobile phone with a sound?
user2722··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
This is based on a video seen on Facebook, so take it with a grain of salt.

AFAIK, BYD batteries are based on "bad" materials, with fabrication method perfected until they are competitive [enough(?)] with batteries made with the "good" materials.

The good stuff is patented, locked by the West. China workarounds it. It's not that it is "bad", is just copying West's strategy doesn't work for them.

user2722··on LineageOS 24
You're conflating local data extraction with security vulnerabilities remotely exploitable via WhatsApp or RCE du jour. Don't.
user2722··on LineageOS 24
Cool; See if this is the time I try using a cuttlefish target + webrtc remoting to drive all those cute privacy intruding apps.
user2722··on LineageOS 24
GOS => security, usability

LOS => most security, most usability, breadth of support

user2722··on LineageOS 24
Don't forget proprietary security patches are only open sourced 3 months after -- GOS has them due to their partnership with Motorola.

A sufficiently motivated threat actor will have them (the exploits) too.

user2722··on An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows
I moved from a densely populated area to a more sparse one. I'll probably renew Kagi because its assistant can answer my questions, such as: "find me a location where I can be on my computer but also public where I can also be with a group of people". Google's Gemini hallucinated spots or imagined details -- at one point it included a shed in the middle of a road -- the shed existed, nothing else did. DDG did similar.

PS: did not test Copilot nor my own LLM accessing another Search Engine's result -- haven't got the headspace for it.

user2722··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Did not see that. Thanks for pointing that out! Will re-read the page.
user2722··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
I had a pseudo-plan for something like this but for reasons related to privacy I had two types of chatrooms:

* regular chats, existing only on the server, no leaking the chat transcript except via users, but never via server to server.

* chambers: a global chatroom, located at a server, maybe with a MQTT anyone could subscribe to.

This never left the early planning stages though, but I thought the segregation between federated chatrooms and regular chatrooms was of interest to keep in sync with IRC open but closed nature of chats.

user2722··on Lab on a Contact Lens Can Measure Stress Through Serotonin
short sci-fi horror story follows:

* Hello, we've called you to HR because we've detected you have been stressed at work.

- Sure, some... overwork status after you reduce headcount, but nothing it isn't being managed with the hierarchy chain.

* Glad to know. Be sure we, as a company, endeavour to have a stress-free workplace. You will be put in a Stress Workplace Reduction PIP, just as a formality of course; since you mentioned you have taken the appropriate steps to reduce stress you should pass the PIP, no need to stress about it! See you in a few weeks.

- Er... Thanks......?

user2722··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
Nowadays since corps lie frequently I treat FAQs as another lie.

If the capability is there, it will be used, specially since the whole decision process appears to have been rather opaque.

user2722··on Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing
Oohohohohoohohohoho Merry Christmas!!!
user2722··on Norton Neo Browser
I do install them. This day only ClamAV I guess. I used (paid for) ESET Linux before they cancelled their Linux consumer line.

On the fence about trying Kaspersky AV Linux. Wouldn't install their suite on Windows though, last I looked at it hooked too many places, causing weird bugs and slowing everything down. Less bad than Comodo, which was able to bork Cygwin, but still.

user2722··on Norton Neo Browser
Don't forget privacy policy.

Norton is owned by Avast owner which sold data for ads.

user2722··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
No-one referenced Firefox also has Brave's adblocking implementation baked in, even if disabled for now.

Additionally, I eagerly await resource (CPU+site size) buckets to be implemented on a browser and a LocalCDN along it to shrink the web.

user2722··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Bluetooth now works with Waydroid? Seamlessly or you have to "disconnect" from host and "connect" it to Waydroid?

AFAIK, Camera (V4L) is also broken on main repo, to anyone else wondering.

user2722··on It's getting harder to focus every day
Rather ironic: I was in the process of moving all Android apps to a second user to be able to stop all apps (and just not DnD, because I'll know I may have some messages waiting for me after disabling DnD) when I got distracted by HN (just one tiny minute).

Another thing I'm testing is having VPN OFF with its kill-switch ON.

user2722··on It's a shame what's happened to radio
Agree. The only problem about radio is requiring wired headphones to serve as antenna.

Do flagship Snapdragon SOCs still have radio? Thinking about next GOS compatible Motorola-branded device, the first device GOS will support with Snapdragon.

user2722··on Israeli spyware vans infiltrate American streets and your phones
But why?
user2722··on TP-Link Kasa cameras leaked home GPS via unauthenticated UDP for 6 years
Did they pay you anything at least, for doing their work?
user2722··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
I thought he had created an website which ran an APK server-side and was loadable in a browser. Oh well.
user2722··on LineageOS Statistics
If the ROM is not expecting to be relocked, it's a ROM problem as well.
user2722··on PlayStation can delete all your digital games after 3 years of inactivity (EU)
Meanwhile to play PS5 games like TMNT you can't use PS4 controllers. This is not a customer focused approach.
user2722··on LineageOS Statistics
While my currently favored approach is GOS', I'd really like to know more. Did anything else change? I'm 15 years out of date. In my mind:

* root is still frowned upon

* microG is frowned upon

* bypassing SafetyNet (sorry, Play Integrity) is frowned upon

* bootloader relocking is not oficially nor semi-officially supported

* missing patches (Google's 6 month source embargo) were not talked about

user2722··on Gemma 4 QAT models: Optimizing compression for mobile and laptop efficiency
There is tinfoil.sh as well but honestly running this stuff on an airgapped server allows a better peace of mind about the data being used for something else.
user2722··on A lost ancient script reveals how writing as we know it began
The half of the story which was available was indeed fascinating.

Dates I'll retain, 1.7 million years and 5000 years. Two different, if associated, marks of civilization.

user2722··on The Road to a Billion-Token Context
Two ideas: grounding the LLM between different chats and researching politicians and their friends through mutual associations.
user2722··on The Road to a Billion-Token Context
I usually ask it to give me two batches of answer: 1) normal; 2) not sycophantic.
user2722··on The Road to a Billion-Token Context
I have a simple and brittle system to track people and facts and associations on Newspapers, which is basically: "LLM extract people, places/projects/structure/places and save them as an Obsidian compatible graph network."

For 2 or 3 newspapers it works; my idea was to use it as grounding to discover relationships between people, companies and jobs.

As for the "everyone's life", I have always assumed that there would be a graph system to point to "forgotten" documents.

Gemini said my idea was amazing and new in its implementation, even if not in spirit, but I'm assuming it was being sycophantic as usual.

user2722··on Apocalypse Early Warning System
You clearly haven't read articles where they said they were pondering all their employees in those bunkers to have explosives in their neck...
