vang3lis··on BelKor has allegedly won Netflix Prize despite being second on the leaderboard
Yes, the difference is negligible, but you obviously can't change rules of the game when it has already finished.
vang3lis··on On the Linear Time Algorithm For Finding Fibonacci Numbers
That and the fact that computing the closed form expression still needs log(n) steps (as exponentiation).
vang3lis··on On the Linear Time Algorithm For Finding Fibonacci Numbers
The title mimicks the common misunderstanding that naive calculation for Fibonacci numbers is done in linear time, which is not true when cost of arithmetic operations is not negligible. The whole point of the article, as I understand it, was to show that not taking such details in account will lead to flawed analysis.

vang3lis··on Ask HN: what linear algebra do you use most often for practical problems?
maybe you could opensource your dataset? ;) (no, no, I'm after votes not images)
vang3lis··on IBM On The Verge of Buying Sun for $7 billion
But everyone in select industries (telecoms?) wants Linux on mainframes or DB2, which still beats crap out of Oracle for some workloads. And don't forget the IBM Research
vang3lis··on Sources: Google In Talks To Acquire Twitter
> This is Google we are talking about, their main move has always been to release their own version of the service, hope to win, and only if that fails, do they open up their pocket book.

But it failed! See what happened to Jaiku

vang3lis··on Deutsche Grammophon launches giant, DRM-free classical music store
but what a label! deutsche grammophon is the finest classical music label out there
vang3lis··on Lisp after Python after Lisp
on python - not anymore, since 2.5 (probably earlier) you can do:

(x if cond else y) which is essentially (cond ? x : y)
