vaughands··on Port of the TypeScript compiler, checker and lsp to Rust, by LLM
I suppose my comment sort of implies this. I think the naive knee jerk reaction is that if you can spit out perfect machine level code against a specification, then logically being closer to bare metal would help with performance. However, without knowing the details of how things worked it is tough to say whether it is truly "reasonable" or not.

But more importantly, the Typescript team themselves [1] picked Golang mostly out of ergonomics and ease of porting at the time. It is becoming more increasingly more to "taste" what ergonomics means. Notably, they did not pick it because they believed it to be the fastest option. But speed was on the mind, giving way to ergonomics and ease of porting. At least, this is my read.

Kudos for keeping up! Golang seemed like a very reasonable choice when you ported there originally but the world is changing _fast_.

Thanks for saying this. I already use Vim (in my browser too). I've used it on and off in an editor as well. I've tried reading books (like I mentioned in the post) which is something you only do when you're truly desperate. For some of us, our body will only allow so much.

I am sure the OP was just trying to help. I, too, when I started having such problems chalked it up to "surely some adjustments will help". And they did! But it never quite ceased.

Thanks for sharing. I feel the same way but did not express it in my post. I've sat down to do some side projects in the past and realized that even though my mind has energy (I hear this can be rare.. but it is true for me!) the hands would be tired. I've probably completed more side projects this year than in the last few, even if the total amount of time spent on them is higher.

Like you, there was always this specter of "don't overdo it".

I thought I would share. I don't see this discussed much and thought it was interesting (it's my own post) when doing some introspection today. Is it from moving up in my career and I just type a little less? Has the movement from typing in a code editor all day to writing more prose helped? It's hard to say for sure, but a fun observation. :) I am curious if anyone else has experienced the same.
vaughands··on AI Makes Me Sad
You think software engineers will go back to writing everything by hand?
vaughands··on What Sun got wrong
Would love to read about these stories if you ever decide to blog and/or write a book about it. :)
vaughands··on RipGrep musl binaries occasionally segfault during very-large searches
Thanks for the fun read.
vaughands··on Moonshine: Lets you stream games from your PC to any device running Moonlight
I think you're underselling this. Sunshine can't do any resolution on Linux. That's huge. :)
vaughands··on Claude Fable 5
It's impressive but it seems like they cut out a ton of the grinding to level up the Charizard to brute force through the game.

While this is no small feat, it looks like Claude was unable to actually use a balanced team and instead just circle-square-pegged this thing. :)

vaughands··on Microsoft is employing dark patterns to goad users into paying for storage?
I see a lot of hate for Google in this thread but at least one thing they do well: it's really easy to fix. Takeout actually works. You can just download your photos and leave. As the top post identified here, Microsoft makes this a REAL pain to leave after they snared you.
vaughands··on Show HN: Moltbook – A social network for moltbots (clawdbots) to hang out
This is a social network. Did I miss something?
vaughands··on The Startup Graveyard
The author posted this on a vibe coding subreddit, so I'd be willing to wager some AI deep research with manual clean up.
vaughands··on You have three minutes to escape the perpetual underclass
It's vogue on HN to sometimes criticize critically so I want to try and be as constructive as possible:

I work for one of these companies. I also have pay bills to pay. I'd like to understand what a real, good alternative is.

Frontier labs such as Google DeepMind are not just going to shutter their doors because 10% of the peons dropped their jobs. I believe, at least, that we should be demanding political accountability and safeguards for society. I only get to live once: if I am to spend it for social change, I best maximize by expected return.

And quitting a job in a capitalist society probably has negative return overall.

vaughands··on You have three minutes to escape the perpetual underclass
This post seems to be haphazardly proposing that big tech will inevitably make everyone's lives miserable. And by working for them, you are enabling this.

It offers no constructive alternative and the author (yes, I know who he is) seems to have no issue with Google hosting their email.

It's hard to take this too seriously (even if there is some legitimate worry here)

vaughands··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Seriously, what is the benefit to the US here? I can't understand how this benefits the country at all.
vaughands··on Everything that uses configuration files should report where they're located
Thank you for your efforts!

These days Proton makes a lot of this unnecessary. I hope Trails games will continue to at least function on Linux. :)

vaughands··on Everything that uses configuration files should report where they're located
It's more common to have to guess in blackbox / proprietary software, like games.

A quick and dirty way to do this is run the program through `strace` and find out what syscall it issues to read it.

I had to do this to figure out where Cold Steel was reading save files from years back: https://vaughanhilts.me/blog/2018/02/16/playing-trails-of-co...

vaughands··on I don't need to clean up my desktop and downloads folders in macOS (2021)
Yep, in terms of just getting storage back I just simply run `ncdu` once a year and go for it.
vaughands··on I don't need to clean up my desktop and downloads folders in macOS (2021)
I kind of like digging through the downloads folder every year or two though and seeing all the things I had done and explored.

I copy anything useful to a NAS and then delete the rest.

vaughands··on Investor Mark Suster says a “handful” of bad actors in VC destroyed SVB
This clip is unfortunately not available in Canada.
vaughands··on Amazon is no longer allowing downloading Kindle Unlimited titles via USB
Just a small note: it is not possible to unDRM books published post 2023 at this time. Amazon has changed their DRM scheme.
vaughands··on Google Kubernetes clusters config checker tool
It's likely someone's 20% project.
vaughands··on Don't let dicts spoil your code (2020)
Refactoring those services sucks though if the data model changes. :(
