veryfancy··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
Mind giving more detail into how it went? Did first-party delivery options tend to exist and work well, or did you just adjust your expectations re: convenience?
veryfancy··on The Milwaukee Brewers win the first World Series title in franchise history
The first two were more like Tuesday, without the extra innings.
veryfancy··on Kolibri: A Sovereign Open-Weight Model
Nice to see public goods in this space.
veryfancy··on Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?
+1 to keeping ownership of skills defining just what I like and symlinking them in where I work.
veryfancy··on Does anybody like React?
Chesterton’s framework.
veryfancy··on GitHub is sinking
I’m with you here. Further: Even though I disagree with it, “GitHub down, Microsoft bad” is a defensible take, but we’ve seen it ad nauseam at this point.
veryfancy··on American Dads Became the Parents Their Fathers Never Were
And it’s great.
veryfancy··on LLMs can be exhausting
In agent-mode mode, IMO, the sweet spot is 2-3 concurrent tasks/sessions. You don’t want to sit waiting for it, but you don’t want to context-switch across more than a couple contexts yourself.
veryfancy··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
GitHub Copilot with Opus 4.5 as the model is great. I have not tried Claude Code, so maybe I don’t know what I’m missing.
veryfancy··on Toys with the highest play-time and lowest clean-up-time
Our problem with modern lego is that the sets are so cool and complex that the kids don’t want to take them apart after they’re built.

The 11yo wants few new sets now because he doesn’t know where he would put them, and declines to swap out his assembled sets.

veryfancy··on Most technical problems are people problems
Saw this post title and immediately thought of Jerry.
veryfancy··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
Hubber here. This didn’t affect us.
veryfancy··on The Recombobulation Area (2023)
Beloved Milwaukee institution.
veryfancy··on Diabetes risk soars for adults who had a sweet tooth as kids
> Noting down the exact type adds complexity to be honest.

Strongly disagree. Metabolic-syndrome diabetes is so different from autoimmune diabetes that it should really have a different name.

veryfancy··on Chain-of-thought can hurt performance on tasks where thinking makes humans worse
So like dating?
veryfancy··on All of Earth's water in a single sphere (2019)
Conspicuously near the Great Lakes (NA)
veryfancy··on The upstream cause of the youth mental health crisis is the loss of community
Everyone’s got a basket of things they can love or hate about this place when they’re in the mood to love or to hate. That’s something to love, I think.
veryfancy··on Scientist Wants to Block the Sun to Cool the Earth
Immediately thought of Monty Burns when I read the title.
veryfancy··on Zuckerberg and Peter Thiel on Facebook, Millenials, and Predictions for 2030
It’s not unreasonable. I like Messi as a better suggestion though.
veryfancy··on Banana prices to go up as temperatures rise, says expert
Bananas are amazingly cheap. At least here in the US Midwest. Even the organic ones. They’re my reference for “cheap food”.
veryfancy··on FDA clears first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor
Wondered this too. Diabetics are at risk for hypoglycemia because of the insulin they take, not the diabetes itself. Maybe metformin for a prediabetic could have this effect?
veryfancy··on Everyone Wants Your Email Address. Think Twice Before Sharing It
It is surely news to some.
veryfancy··on Are cooking videos making us better cooks?
Really dig Kenji’s low-stakes YouTube vids. He makes it look easy in a way that ends up actually being easy.
veryfancy··on Are cooking videos making us better cooks?
Chef John is a delight. Charming man, straightforward recipes.
veryfancy··on Are cooking videos making us better cooks?
Same for my two sons. Wonderful book.
veryfancy··on DiaryLand is still going?
Greetings from Wisconsin, “America’s Dairyland.” We are still here!
veryfancy··on Writing summaries is more important than reading more books
Derek Sivers does this and has a section of his site with all his notes: https://sive.rs/book

Great source of interesting reads, too. So some potential prosocial utility there, too.

veryfancy··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
> "which part of this game constitues giving it a 10/10?"

The logic I imagine here: "BotW was approximately 10/10. And this is no worse than BotW."

(YMMV on whether BotW was that good.)

veryfancy··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
Link to the Past was my Zelda, too. But BotW surpassed it for me, and TotK so far has been "more BotW". I guess I could imagine being disappointed by that, but so far the prevailing feeling is delight. And a wish that I had more time in my schedule to play.
veryfancy··on Legend of Zelda game sells 10M copies in three days
...and it's actually very good.
