viewtransform··on Where did our belief in abundance come from?
Slaves were used to grow rice (South Carolina, Georgia), sugarcane (Louisiana), corn (Virginia, to Mississipi), wheat, and vegetables (sweet potatoes, beans, okra, collard greens, squash, cabbage etc)

They were used in cattle ranching and hog husbandry. They worked as butchers and meat processors. In places like the Chesapeake Bay region enslaved individuals were involved in oyster harvesting and processing.

SSO = Single sign-on

"SSO refers to a SaaS or similar vendor allowing a business client to manage user accounts via the client’s own identity provider, without having to rely on the vendor to provide strong authentication with audit logs, and with the ability to create and delete user accounts centrally, for all users, across all software in use by that client."

Often times during a Teams meeting someone would wonder who had filed this ticket and I would "Control-L p Jose Smith" to instantly bring up the org chart for Jose Smith. People were amazed.

The Control-L/Command-L(mac) to focus the url bar. p is the keyword set to search the internal company org chart.

Another useful Firefox feature is to right click, Take Screenshot, and save the full web page rendered as you see it as an image. This is useful for those internal webpages with tables and fancy javascript rendered widgets that never properly render to pdf when saving the page.

viewtransform··on The Trillion-Gallon Question: What If California’s Dams Fail?
This was a well written article. Making people aware of the engineering/hydrological analysis of a possible event is not fear mongering. It is the first step to planning.

"modeled on the Great Flood of 1862, which also made a lake of the Central Valley". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Flood_of_1862

The failure of the Oroville Dam spillway in 2017 and the hasty evacuation of home downstream was a real crisis event. Today Oroville is at 100% capacity [1] but snowpack seems to have been greatly reduced from the peak this year [2]. One could easily visualize a scenario where a rapid warming in April of this year could have caused snow melt to overwhelm the reservior flood storage capacity.

BRICS is a joke. Russia has a growing pile of Indian rupees and complains to India that they don't want any more. India will never agree to use the Chinese yuan as a dollar replacement because Xi Jinping is flashing his junk on their borders. China looks down on uppity India since they have a massive trade surplus with them. South Africa with water shortages and 16 hour power outages is not going anywhere economically. None of them want Russian currency because of sanctions. That leaves Brazil - which is looking to team up with nearly bankrupt Argentina for a common currency.

Meanwhile Brazil (22B), India (122B) and China (380B) run multi-billion dollar trade surpluses with the U.S.

viewtransform··on Zluda: Run CUDA code on Intel GPUs, unmodified
Yes it is a legal issue. AMD cannot implement CUDA.

However, they have gone around that by creating HIP which is a CUDA adjacent language that runs on AMD and also translates to CUDA for Nvidia GPUs. There is also the HIPify tool to automatically convert existing sources from CUDA to HIP. https://docs.amd.com/bundle/HIP-Programming-Guide-v5.3/page/...

viewtransform··on Lisa Su saved AMD – Now she wants Nvidia's AI crown
When Dr Su took over - there was no coherent product roadmap at AMD. There were various headless zombie projects because of a management exodus around 2012.

Dr Su made some decisive calls to stop projects and placed a prescient long term bet on high-performance computing.

She shut down low-power tablet asic designs, shut down the SeaMicro acquisition, shutdown Keller's K12 ARM chip, shutdown a large monolithic CPU/GPU asic with shared memory and planned a shift from Global Foundries to TSMC.

Deep Learning was not on the radar unfortunately. It fell under Raja Koduri's group and he made an unfortunate bet on Virtual Reality (way before Zuckerburg started his metaverse fantasy).

It the end it helped that Intel stumbled badly allowing AMD to recover financially.

viewtransform··on Lisa Su saved AMD – Now she wants Nvidia's AI crown
Have you revisited it recently in the last 2-3 years? OpenGL, Vulkan and DX12 drivers have been completely rewritten from scratch and share a common hardware abstraction layer. They pass all Khronos conformance tests, OEM and ISV certification tests and have similar performance as Nvidia on SPEC benchmarks.
viewtransform··on Render a neural network into CUDA/HIP code
HIP is AMD's contribution to the open source community to overcome Nvidia's CUDA software moat

You write in HIP C++ language and run them on either NVIDIA or AMD platforms. This way you get cross-platform code and are not stuck with Nvidia.

Use HIPify tool to automatically convert existing sources from CUDA to HIP.

It's been around for many years - but the fact that so many people still don't know about it - speaks for the sad state of AMD communication.

viewtransform··on Aboriginal Australian genomes reveal Indian ancestry (2013)
Agreed, ancestry is boring. I focused on ancient human migration which I find interesting.
viewtransform··on Aboriginal Australian genomes reveal Indian ancestry (2013)
I recommend too. This is the documentary created by Spencer Wells who led the National Genographic project. This was created using data about 15 years ago - I've been looking forward to an update that accounts for recent data.
viewtransform··on Aboriginal Australian genomes reveal Indian ancestry (2013)
I don't have the raw sequence. The project handled DNA data in total privacy.

I did send my DNA swab a second time about 5-6 years later, this time to look at my maternal line (mitochondrial dna). The report had changed quite a bit possibly because the project had gathered more data in the intervening years. .

I've stopped looking into this further - I really don't care about my ancestors or genetics. More interested in humans as a whole - and for that we need more data.

viewtransform··on Aboriginal Australian genomes reveal Indian ancestry (2013)
India was just a waypoint on the journey of human genes from Africa to Australia.
viewtransform··on Aboriginal Australian genomes reveal Indian ancestry (2013)
More than a decade ago I submitted my DNA to the National Genographic Project [1] which was an attempt to trace ancient human migration using Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA from a sampling of people around the world.

My paternal Y-chromosome line showed an ancient mutation (>50K year ago) carried by humans who had likely spread through a coastal migration from Africa around coasts of the Arabian Sea down to South India and eventually thousands of years later to Australia. My ancestors are from the west coast of India. About 5% of Indians carry this mutation (shared with indigenous australians) according to the data that was available at that time.

As we gather more data our understanding of human migration inevitably clashes with identity politics/nationalism and previous simplistic pre-scientific classifications based on skin color and facial features: Aryan invasion, Dravidian etc. Human migration appears to be much richer. There have been many migrations of humans groups both in and out of the Indian subcontinent going on for more than 50K years.
