Warning on franchise fitness gyms: the document you sign for payment is usually with a 3rd party bank not the gym. The gym gets paid by the bank and you owe the bank not the gym. The gym has no incentive to let you cancel. If you complain - it's between you and the bank.

viewtransform··on Languages of India
>That turned out to be a big hoax. This is the second time such a frenzy was created for no apparent reason. There is no such "imposition" done by the Centre

https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/centre-removes-mandat... The controversial sentence appeared in Section 4.5.9, titled ‘Flexibility in the choice of languages’. It said: “In keeping with the principle of flexibility, .... the study of languages by students in the non-Hindi-speaking states would include the regional language, Hindi and English. ”

viewtransform··on Languages of India
That is not entirely correct either. Hindi and English are official languages of the Republic of India. If you watched the swearing-in ceremony of the recent Modi government some cabinet members chose to be sworn-in in English.
viewtransform··on Languages of India
The right solution is to leave it to parents and students to decide what languages they want to study in and what languages they choose to learn.

Hindi is gradually becoming universally understood all over the country precisely because it was not imposed on linguistic minorities. When people don't feel that their culture is threatened they are open to learning Hindi. Bollywood and television has done more to promote Hindi than all the academic language bigots making decisions from Delhi.

viewtransform··on Languages of India
"I can tell you with conviction that in my lifetime I have never had anyone impose Hindi on me."

This is because several fellow south Indians gave up their lives to ensure that north Indian language bigots would not have their way.

Read your history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Hindi_agitations_of_Tamil...

viewtransform··on Languages of India
The West expected India to be a failed state within a decade of independance. There were 584 princely states and hundreds of linguistic, religious and cultural minorities to integrate within one country.

Compare India to Yugoslavia which broke up violently along ethnic lines or to Sri Lanka which had a bloody civil war that lasted 25 years. Or the division of Pakistan into Bangladesh along racial and linguistic lines even though they shared the same religion.

What I fear is that young Indians take nation for granted and don't understand that India's secular democracy is fragile and that it can within a generation 'be broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls'.

viewtransform··on Flying-V: Flying long distances energy-efficiently
Think about it.

500 years ago it took Columbus and his crew of 88 men ten weeks to reach America in three 58 foot, 100 ton wooden boats pushed along the ocean by wind. They had no toilets, ate boiled food with cheese and salted meats.

Today, 525 of us can travel on a 230 feet long, 600 ton flying boat lifted above the clouds crossing over the north pole from Los Angeles to Dubai at Mach 0.8 in 17 hours. We can watch movies, special order a kosher or vegetarian meal, drink fine wine while wearing complimentary socks and PJ's. For a few thousand dollars each.

viewtransform··on Why Do Laptop Makers Have Such Terrible Websites
I suspect the answer is in the org structure of these large companies.

There are PM/s for the Spectre line of products, another for Pavilion, another for Zbook, Envy, Workstation etc. The PMs report to separate corporate silos with individual directors who have to show annual growth for their group otherwise 'no bonus for you'. So each group ends up segmenting their respective market in every way possible to try to maximize profit. That how you end up with every possible combination of (display x cpu x memory x SSD x GPU x form factor) at every possible price point to be sold this quarter. Not to mention old inventory that needs to clear out.

The corporate website is run by yet another internal web group that collects product info from the various silos and outsources the actual web design in a waterfall software development model to an outsourcing company in India.

Meanwhile the top VP just cannot cut through the process and complexity of what he is managing and limits himself to pounding his fist on the table when quarterly profits are in danger while plotting his next move up the corporate ladder by jumping ship at the right opportunity.

viewtransform··on Intel CEO resigns after relationship with employee
That is true for general purpose computing. However, AMD has been diversifying away from client (laptops, desktops). There is a large and growing market for semi-custom designs: game consoles, CPU+GPU cloud computing, DaaS virtualization, embedded systems. Since these are markets with large companies competing against each other there will be continual demand for incremental power and performance improvements that an individual consumer may not care about. A company that can rapidly mix and match IP to customer needs will have an advantage.
