vkreso··on Money Creation in the Modern Economy – Its a Wonderful Lie
Both parties need to have a specific good or service the other wants for barter to be successful. Money, however, can serve as a medium of exchange eliminating that problem thereby being useful enough to let yourself get taxed for its use.
vkreso··on The Art of Abduction
Latin dē, especially in etymollogy of deduction, usually means "of" - meaning: regarding, in respect of, concerning etc. (Look de facto, de jure, de dato, de futuro...);

with dūcō - meaning to lead, to guide forming deducere as present active infinitive;

in contrast with the prefix ab which usually means "from" or "away from" as in "ab ovo" where "de ovo" would mean something regarding the egg instead of originating from or away from the egg (also look ab initio, ab extra, ab hinc...).

Similair to the word absent coming from latin absens, absum where ab means "away from" and sum means "I am", taken together meaning "not present".

Thus in the context of logic where deduce would mean going in one way, abduce would imply going away from that way i.e. reverse direction.

vkreso··on The Art of Abduction
From Latin abductiō (“robbing; abduction”), from abdūcō (“take or lead away”), from ab (“away”) + dūcō (“to lead”)[1]. Equivalent to abduct +‎ -ion.

"Away" and "to lead" indead does imply a reverse direction.

vkreso··on The cheap pen that changed writing forever
I use a Schneider topball 845. It's very consistent, smooth, sharp and without smearing.

It's 0.3 mm though, but a rollerball so it leaves a more saturated and wider writing trail than a ballpoint pen.

vkreso··on 'Alarming' loss of insects and spiders recorded
Those darned people looking for better life opportunities, security and happiness by moving to the developed world.

Calling such behavior "forced" is so inconsiderate. It blows my mind that you are trying to blame people for trying to find better lives. Should a lady in a brazilian favela not have washing machines? Should people not experience and use electric light or air travel? I also assume you are from the west which makes your position extremely arrogant as well.

I am very afraid of what the environmentalist movenment is turning into and would not be surprised to see major violent eco-terrorist events in the future. Makes me ashamed to support green policies.

So inconsiderate.

vkreso··on Space: A Major Legal Void
According to the UN convention on the law of the sea article 92.[0] Ships in international waters are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state under whose flag they are sailing. It is basically the same situation in regards with the legal subjectivity of an object since usually in international waters local laws do not apply.

There is also the case of the ISS and the intergovermental agreement behind it where in article 5. it is clearly stated that: "each partner shall retain jurisdiction and control over the elements it registers and over personnel in or on the Space Station who are its nationals"

And finally the most iportant is the outer space treaty, signed by most of the states in the world, article 8.:

"State Party to the Treaty on whose registry an object launched into outer space is carried shall retain jurisdiction and control over such object, and over any personnel thereof, while in outer space or on a celestial body"[2]

What is your government if I may ask?

vkreso··on Still Manufacturing Consent: An Interview with Noam Chomsky
> Debreu's work on general equilibrium, which was the basis of the award, had to skirt around the SMD theorem:

Watch out for moving the goalposts. He was awarded the nobel prize after all. "Rigorous reformulation" does not sound like skirting at all.

> This "anything goes" situation then leads to non-unique equilibria, since a supply curve can now intersect the market demand curve at more than one point. But since an equilibrium point is supposed to be where welfare is maximised in a society, the existence of non-unique equilibria means that there can be multiple economic arrangements under which social welfare is maximised.

Economy (or climate or orbits) exhibit chatoic and complex behaviour and it is not surprising that they can have multiple stable points (look up bifurcation diagrams for a simple representation of chatoic solutions). If I am not mistaken, one can hear such things routinely in university economy classrooms today especially when giving caveats about models being wrong in general. Even when you include game theory and Nash equilibria with respect to economic solutions, there might not be efficient ways to reach the equilibrium points at all!

> Then it's a matter of taste (i.e. "ideology") to decide which equilibrium point a society wants to be in.

That is to assume that every equilibrium solution you get is tied to a specific policy or a set of them (or even more, an ideology!) or that points can be reached easily which are very strong assumptions. Maybe some ideologies don't exhibit any reachable equilibrium points or pertain only to unstable ones.

> Man, if you want to hear about anti-intellectualism and bias, go and look at the SMD theorem.

The D in SMD was actually awarded the nobel prize in economics.

vkreso··on African leaders launch landmark 55-nation trade zone

vkreso··on Why what we think we know about schizophrenia is wrong
Everything is based on theories and assumptions. Everything is a model and all models are wrong.

The problem with psychology is that it is a much more disjointed science than others (and has been for a long time). You have islands of logic and some overlapping theories but all of them do not follow a unified framework. It is similar to how modern physics is trying to connect quantum theory and gravity.

I'd argue that the scale of such disjointedness correlates with the power of predictability of phenomena in a certain field. It is therefore true that we know nothing and at the same time something about mental health.

Connecting and integrating psychology through evolutionary psych, behavioral theories, cognitive sciences and such is an ongoing area of research and an example of an effort which reduces disjointedness of a field which may result in more succesful predictions and deeper knowledge about mental health.

vkreso··on Israeli scientists claim to have found cure for cancer
Exactly. Gut feeling is another word for intuition. Such background cognition is a great tool in science and has been found in use by a lot of top scientists and thinkers. Training it by broadening your knowledge and then using skepticism and other science tools to focus your thinking is a great way for finding stuff out.
