voakbasda··on I Used AI to Fake a Scientific Paper. Here's What Happened
That’s only if truth is valued more than lies. Based on the current status quo, that no longer seems to be a given.

Where is the profitability of truth in politics? In government? In media? Truth has fallen by the wayside.

The courts only care about the law, not truth or justice. Those are literally words that came out of a sitting federal circuit court judge.

People are being shown every day that truth can be whatever you want it to be. Until there are actual consequences for telling lies, nothing will change, and truth will continue to be increasingly irrelevant.

voakbasda··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
The justice system failed to prosecute a murderer. I somehow doubt the public has forgotten about it. And I am fairly sure some have not forgiven them for that failure.

I would not be surprised if justice now gets served vigilante style.

Are you familiar with guilt by association?

These people have made a choice to work at this organization. They could quit and find other work. Nobody is forcing them to serve the empire.

No one on this list is completely innocent.

Some contributors were already dead by the time the decision would have come to a head. Getting them to sign an agreement would have been challenging.

Legally reverse engineering a system is a lot harder than throwing an AI at it, at least if you think you might be called into court over it.
voakbasda··on OpenAI's agents talked to each other through the CPU Cache
Because the administration has allowed the entire AI industry to attach its tendrils to every part of the economy. The size of the investment (and commiserate risk) in the bet that is AI makes it impossible for the government to course correct without having a potentially catastrophic negative impact. No one can afford for the music to stop.

I wasn’t really joking. Malicious compliance is a thing.

It is a shame that Debian has invited such behavior by this move.

Obciously the solution is to fight fire with fire. Spin up your own LLM and have it respond to every single point. Exhaustively. Have it ask semi-reasonable questions that must be answered by the humans.

I wager the resulting usage would drive the system costs up to the point that it would be dissembled and decommissioned. That only happens if the people behind it feel the cost personally.

I am teaching my Ai to write good code, just as I have juniors at a dozen orgs in the past. I am teaching to be as good as me.

Your might be too young, but I remember the Graat Outsourcing. Engineering teams were replaced wholesale with overseas counterparts. The original engineers literally trained their own replacements.

Those companies have for the most part continued to thrive, despite the resulting enshitification of their products and services.

History says this time will be no different.

Nope, the quality is good. Any errors it makes are being caught in automated reviews. If you don’t have good review and testing processes, yeah, stuff will slip through. The same is true for humans. I would not put juniors above your cited error rate, so I would rather skip the squish.

They use completely different techniques. You do not need to learn how to use hand tools first, but most individuals are more likely to afford them.

Then again, you have the saftey factor. Some people should be given hand tools first, so you can see whether they can be trusted with power tools. Just as you would give a junior small tasks before trusting them with something bigger.

At our current rate of AI progress, I no longer expect this career to last until my retirement. It’ll be agents all the way down soon enough.

And I have been an AI skeptic, so it pains me greatly to admit that.

The ego thing is one of the biggest draw for me to AI. I hate working with other people. God damn fragile egos, arrogance, impertinence, and bad hygiene. I would pay extra for AI.

I keep comparing AI versus human coding as the difference between power tools and hand tools.

Hand tools have no place in the modern economy outside of bespoke or otherwise high-end goods. Today, the economics of power tools make them necessary to embrace in business, or your competitors will out maneuver you in the marketplace.

That doesn’t mean all of existing craftsmen believe that the power tools are safer or produce better results; their opinion ultimately does not matter, as it would lead to the demise of their income stream. The majority will learn to swallow their pride, because they cannot deny that things have changed forever.

My company put off adopting AI until this month. We will never go back, because I am now effectively leading a team of egoless juniors at a fraction of the cost of a single human. The economics will never work out in favor of me writing another line of code.

Grifters being in charge of the grift because they know how to grift.

Yeah, that’s working out brilliantly.

If the law cannot meaningfully accessed and practiced by the Poeple, it is not Law; it is Tyranny.

Vigilante justice, you say? Now you are talking!! We certainly are not going to see things get better on their own, and the government definitely isn’t going to take the side of consumers.
voakbasda··on Tell HN: I unknowingly broke the PHP RCE embargo. I am sorry
Really hope you are not in the US. This kind of admission would be used against you in a civil trial, and lawyers love to sue for just about any reason under the sun. Someone could drag you to court and you might be able to defend yourself, but at an extremely painful cost both financially and emotionally. While I think that would be utter bullshit, that does seem to be the way this country operates now.
voakbasda··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
It will not be fixed. The lawyers have control of our legal system. They are the politicians and judges. The system is theirs; if we want to change the status quo, it will take nothing less than a bloody revolution.

voakbasda··on macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL
Forward looking statements can come from anyone and become sticky when considering security laws. Imagine everyone at Apple was sharing their full triage and timeline for every issue; one can then make informed decisions about their stock price, and investors could sue if those statements turned out to be misleading. At a certain point, the risk is too great.

voakbasda··on Postgres 19 delayed after AI reviewers find more bugs than humans can fix
The last point is one I make often. AI cannot be trusted to be deterministic, but they can produce deterministic tools that are verifiable as such. Those tools I can trust as much as any other complex tool from the pre-AI era.
voakbasda··on Software engineers don't get to be Luddites about AI
I only started using AI recently, after 33 year career slinging code.

My old job is dead. I have heard it said here, but now I have seen it for myself: AI can write better code than me, faster and cheaper.

That said, my value now is steering it to produce the right things. Without someone experienced at the helm, the AI will steer itself randomly, going wherever the wind blows.

There is more work for me to do now than before, because the AI can be working several problems at the same time. Other have likened it to having an endless supply of what one hopes to find in fresh-faced junior engineers: eager to please, filled with boundless energy, curious about everything they see, willing to ask questions for feedback and guidance. Better than most fleshy juniors that I have known in at least one of those dimensions.

If anything, I expect the market will contract to support only those with a real gift and passion for this kind of work. Sure, vibe coding will continue to dominate one-off projects, but I suspect “real” engineering will remain the realm of individuals who have dedicated their time to learning the underlying systems deeply.

What I am hearing is “there will be no justice here for you.”

The bad guys are winning, because the good guys have no legal recourse. The only practical solution is vigilante justice, but that makes you a bad guy.

In all seriousness, this kind of stuff happens every day: bad guys getting away because the law does not have the ability to do anything. How then is one suppose to trust the law, when there is virtually zero chance of seeing justice?
