vondur··on The Ubuntu 26.04 Rust sudo is not compatible with standard sudo
I use Fedora if that's helpful. Well, I've been using Bluefin for the last few months and it's certainly different.
vondur··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
I almost purchased that truck, but I needed a higher cargo capacity for my travel trailer, and the added batteries reduced it by 250lbs or so. The ability to plug a travel trailer directly into the truck and run it is really cool.
vondur··on Nvidia RTX Spark encrypted firmware slows inference speed to 35% on Linux
We used to have things called WinModems back in the day. Skipped using hardware modems and ran it on software that only worked under windows.
vondur··on Insects don't swarm at LED lights
The outside LED lights on my RV would disagree with this.
vondur··on North Korean fake job interview led to $6.3B Binance heist
They also mention that in the movie.
vondur··on macOS 27 does not support CoreStorage volumes
It doesn't really do everything that a real LVM does though. This was used to support those annoyingly bad Fusion Drives. They dropped them around 2020 I think.
vondur··on France is getting download tax for content providers (€0.055/GB)
France is in pretty bad financial shape, so they are going to be looking at getting money wherever they can.
vondur··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
Microsoft is known for making Windows run older programs. Apple not so much.
vondur··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
Oh wow, Be and Eazel. I bet you have some good stories. I do miss the BeOS and Eazel was doing some good stuff for the Linux desktop back in the day.
vondur··on AI use leads UC Berkeley math professor to see 'no point' in grading homework
When I was in College (as a Chem major) homework was not graded. It was there for you to do to prepare for exams. I'm assuming that this is different for pure math majors though.
vondur··on NixOS is making me less afraid
I have to agree, I've been using Fedora Bluefin and had some issues and Claude was able to troubleshoot it all. Would have taken me a bunch of time to untangle it myself.
vondur··on M7.6 Earthquake in Panama
Looks like it was centered away from densely populated areas. Still pretty big.
vondur··on Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai
Enantiomers and Diastereomers are one of the more interesting and challenging things in Organic Chemistry. It also makes carbohydrate chemistry challenging in Biochem.
vondur··on Venice’s failed war against Constantinople led to the first bond market
The sack of Constantinople was 30 years into the future after this expedition. But yes, after the fall of Constantinople in 1204, it never was able to recover its former power. Manuel I Komnenos really blew it with the decision to anger the Venetian's.
vondur··on On social reality in China
Just like with most Empires, that wealth was heavily concentrated with the rich and powerful, a very small group of elites.
vondur··on Shimano Bicycle Museum Review
I like the Shimano MTB stuff, usually I'm all in on the XT level stuff. I did have some XTR cranks back in the day, but they had this cool dark grey color. I especially like the XT disk brakes and their clipless XT trail pedals.
vondur··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
This is the info that people should be looking at. Building these facilities takes time. I'm guessing they are thinking that demand is not going to decline anytime soon to justify this buildout. EDIT both SKHynix and Samsung are also expanding their DRAM production lines and new plants. So they are all working on adding new capacity.
vondur··on Why Doesn't Anyone Want to Fix One of America's Scariest Roads?
Mountain driving can be scary if you are driving too fast or in bad weather. We have the Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest highway here in SoCal which is windy and has steep cliffs. Every weekend people come out with their motorcycles and sports cars and try to turn it into a race course. I remember years back a carpool van with people commuting to Cal Tech from Palmdale went over the side killing the passengers. It was during the winter and it was foggy and may have been icy too.
vondur··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It’s amazing how much more land in the central coast area is now dedicated to growing grapes.
vondur··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Many other people drive more than you do.
vondur··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Man going from a Windows environment all the way to NixOS is quite the change isn't it? Probably good if NixOS can get more attention and easier to use. I see a lot of hype for it, and then people seem to give up as it can get pretty gnarly with some of the configuration. I'm a fan of something like Fedora Silverblue with the immutable OS setup.
vondur··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
No thanks, I pay too much in taxes as it is. California has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.
vondur··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
Really, what kind of damage? Granted their cuisine isn’t the best, but it’s hardly damaging.
vondur··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
My father in law did database programming for small businesses using FoxPro. It was pretty cool, it created the executable and you could host it on any Windows file server IIRC. I think it also may have had some server functionality built in too. Anyways, it was fast if the database was designed correctly and allowed for easy setup at the clients offices. I think before that he was using a product called Clipper.
vondur··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Yeah, I kept getting a notification about purchasing and extended warranty for my AirPods, which was annoying because it shows up in the same place as OS updates.
vondur··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
No, I watch video of cars coming into the shop and the models from the Midwest are usually in pretty rough shape due to all the corrosion from the salt on the roads. And brand doesn't seem to matter.
vondur··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
Ha, I watched some guy on Youtube who bought a carwash. It's seems like a decent way to basically make some money with not a ton of work. Plus, you can get a lot of money as cash too, makes it easy to not report as income, which I bet a lot of their owners do.
vondur··on I hate you Microsoft
It looks like your license only allows for the web version, so your university probably isn't spending that much for it. You'd get the same message on Windows too.
vondur··on Fujitsu launches made-in-Japan next-generation CPU FUJITSU-MONAKA
Every developed country is going to push for their own homemade chips. Japan used to make Sparc CPU's back in the day. Probably many others I'm not aware of.
vondur··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
I've assumed that they put weapons on satellites as soon as it was possible.
