vostrocity··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
I think a lot of businesses have adopted this. I've seen Papa John's orders on Roadie, but I'm sure they also use Uber Eats or DoorDash and their own in-house drivers.

Walmart asks me to sign up for their Prime equivalent every time I go on their website. I'm never going to do that.

I've worked these 1099 grocery delivery gigs and you get paid around minimum wage to lug these very heavy orders of water and juice up stairs, all while adding miles to your own vehicle and bearing the full risk of injury because you're an independent contractor. I hope you tip them well at least.
vostrocity··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
Michael Nielsen is up there among my favorites as well.

Wow I had no idea Mechanical Turk closed. I assumed it would be quite valuable for doing a lot of data labelling type of work that percolates into AI models.

The arms themselves are open source and nearly free to operate.

George Hotz wrote a similar perspective

>I think this is basically what it will be for most knowledge work, knowledge workers are so grossly overpaid compared to the energy they consume, and AI will rectify that. This explains why the Chinese are giving the (much more moderate resources to train) models away for free. They love to see deflationary economics in the US.

There have been stories like Medvi which did $400m in revenue last year with only a two person team and a bunch of contractors, but it is such a specific niche around arbitraging medical prescriptions, I don't think it could be done in-house at OpenAI without it being a huge distraction.

There's even a product that lets you retrofit an old iPod with a modern motherboard

vostrocity··on Porsche Mission S
In a video, a Porsche official said they haven't decided on the engine yet.
vostrocity··on Recreational Programming
This looks like it was meant to be presented to a live audience.
vostrocity··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
If designed well, it could be audited hardware with on-device processing.
vostrocity··on OpenAI finds recording device in one of their offices
That does make more sense. But if any company were to take surprising security measures, it should be the frontier labs.
vostrocity··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
Free startup idea: Anti-espionage cameras for corporate offices. Put it behind TVs and plants etc. and it will notify the security team if it detects new objects.
vostrocity··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
How did they get that capture of Alfozan looking behind the TV? Does OpenAI install its own surveillance cameras behind TVs to prevent espionage?
vostrocity··on Apple Watch Series 12
I've definitely had situations where I zoned out for a few seconds during a meeting or seminar, and want to see what was just spoken. That seems like a much stronger use case where you wouldn't want to interrupt the whole room to ask what was just spoken.
vostrocity··on Fastpotify
People often cite they were first to market, but isn't the bigger factor that they are backed by all the big music labels?
vostrocity··on Fastpotify
I use Pocket Casts all the time and have never heard an ad inserted to a podcast.
vostrocity··on Beware Management Consultants
Actually had no idea Dr. Bronner's was this weird. The guy started it as a tax-exempt religious organization!
vostrocity··on The Amazon tax
Surprisingly, their "Alexa for Shopping" feature has been quite good for finding products that contain a specific set of desired features.

I was looking for a device that plugs into my car's 12V cigarette lighter outlet, connects with my phone's Bluetooth, outputs the audio to 3.5mm aux (my car has aux input but no Bluetooth), has no battery, automatically turns on with my car, has next and previous track buttons, and outputs USB-C with at least 30W.

Amazon's search filters were useless for this, but their LLM was able to read through reviews and suggest products that come very close. Unfortunately, no exact product exists that fulfills all the requirements.

vostrocity··on Apple is getting this wrong
Seriously, that was the only person with a level head. When has it ever been okay to discuss work details with an ex-coworker months after they left?

The odd thing is one of the guys has the first name Chang, and the other guy has the last name Chang.

Maybe someone could help me understand what this message means.

> I think I’m going to have to hit the workday button before I’m complete. I just got a weird message that is making me nervous (see below), so I am going to go hit the workday button now.

vostrocity··on Apple is getting this wrong
Why in the world would a high-level Apple employee not sign out of his personal iCloud on his work computer, and then also use his personal iCloud for data from his new company?
vostrocity··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
I don't follow any sport, but I actually don't understand why UEFA and FIFA are non-profits when all the American leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL) are for-profit corporations. It seems to work well in America.
vostrocity··on Bring back crappy forums
The 'like' counts in places like YouTube and Instagram comments have made clear to me the idea of tyranny of the majority.
vostrocity··on Every Frame Perfect
A lot of these animation regressions in Apple's UI originated from iOS 7 and the move away from skeuomorphism.

The move away from skeuomorphism made it acceptable for UI elements to do things that make no sense.

Examples:

1. https://photos5.appleinsider.com/archive/13.06.15-Homescreen...

The status bar is unreadable on in-between frames, whereas in iOS 6 there was no such problem.

2. https://youtu.be/XawiZc8qmWA?si=vqT-JEYf0NDp8I9o&t=461

Play it at 0.25x and notice the app opening animation.

In iOS 6, the status bar is never unreadable for a single frame.

In iOS 7, the status bar is first obstructed by home screen icons animating under it, then obstructed by the dock animating over it, and finally it fades away while a new status bar is drawn on the app that is being opened.

It irks me to no end that iOS handles the status bar this way to this day. In the app switcher, every app card is drawn with a blank area at the top [1] where the status bar would go, when really the status bar should be permanently at the top and the app card should not include space for the status bar (webOS figured it out before iOS 7 [2]).

vostrocity··on An Ohio Valley 100k-watt FM signal is severed in broad daylight
A topic I'm interested in that is upstream of what you're saying is the propagation of meaning. If somebody has no idea what the Mona Lisa or the Statue of Liberty are, then we can't really bemoan that they would not ascribe any value to it beyond its raw material.
vostrocity··on S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic
The market may not have ever priced in a rebalancing of the S&P 500, but the S&P 500 also has never allowed entry of companies that may never become profitable.
vostrocity··on I am retiring from tech to live offline
If you are somewhat of a public figure and working in a leadership role at a company, I think it's more sensible to put out a widely-seen public announcement about where you are going next, than to just disappear.
